Been toying with the idea lately of selling my 4Runner for a TJ... thoughts?
I absolutely love my car but I really crave a solid axle and simple inline 6 :tape:

Strong aftermarket and I’ve had a couple Jeep’s with the 4.0L in it. Great motor in terms of reliability and durability but still under powered (like a 3RZ/5VZ).

If you are planning on daily driving it be prepared for a rougher ride. I’ve driven a lot of wranglers built in the last 25 years, and I think they all ride like a chuck wagon. They’re also a lot louder in every aspect. Just my $0.02

I could use some help diagnosing a very high idle. It idles around 1800-1900 in park, and 1000 in gear.

For background, I just replaced lots of components all at once - new TPS, new fuel injectors, all new air/fuel hoses. I also cleaned the IAC (gently), disassembled all the throttle linkages and cables, etc. So lots of opportunities for potential screwups.

The truck seems to run well, although it's showing about 12 mpg around town, compared to 16 mpg before the work.

I took some screenshots of my Torque app, but not sure if it points me to anything. Is there anything here of concern, or should I check some other readings?

Also, any chance that it's just a matter of the ECU "learning" how to operate with all the new components?

Does anyone know the part number or an alternative for the grommet that goes in the instrument cluster where the trip stick pokes out? Mine has been missing long before I bought my car and the inside of the cluster behind the lens is super dusty lmao. I should be able to blow it all out pretty easily, but it won't help unless I can plug the hole

My Mechanic is @ a loss with my 1997 Toyota 4Runner, 289,000 miles

Good Afternoon,

New here; I need some help, please. I have taken my Runner to the dealership for service, and they "can't recreate the problem," and the videos don't tell them anything because she isn't throwing any codes.
So it's left to me and my research; I am at a loss, and so is my mechanic.
I have spent over $3,000 trying to fix it.

Problem #1: Normally, she will cold-start just fine. However, if I drive her for 30 minutes, and put her in park, she will rev up to 2-3000 rpms. Sometimes, she will come down, sometimes not. If I put her in gear, she'll drop to 1-1500 rpms. Then, put her in neutral or park, and she will rev back up again.

Problem #2: Cruise control won't work

Problem #3: The trip meter doesn't work

I'll turn her off and attempt to restart, and she won't turn over. I have replaced the following:
6 Spark Plugs
2 Ignition Coils & Boots
Idle Air Control Valve
then the whole Throttle Body Assembly
Crankshaft Position Sensors
Camshaft Position Sensors

Even after all that, she is still causing problems. However, problem #2 seems to be fixed.

My mechanic has checked everything, he thinks that the only other thing is the Fuel Pump, Fuel Pressure Sensor.

Given what you've already checked out you might have a vacuum hose leak and/or the O2 sensors may be going bad.

You can easily check for vacuum leaks with a smoke machine which your mechanic may have or simply with cigar smoke blown into the brake master hose or other hoses in your intake. If you discover a leak, tape over it then run the engine. If it's better, replace the hose. If all your hoses are over 10 yrs old and/or stiff, those may be cracking and problematic.

If you have over 100k miles on your O2 sensors, 1 before the catalytic converter and the other after it, they may be failing as the generally last 100-150k miles because of use of carbon buildup inside them. However, when they fail that will shoot a code. Your mechanic can do a simple voltage test on them. Cleaning them may give you a temporary fix.

You can buy rubber grommets different sizes in a kit on line or go to ace hardware and get one that fits.

Does anybody know how I can wire my raptor grille lights to my side marker lights and a 3rd gen?

Looking for guys that have done a 5 speed swap in an 01 or 02 and retained their transfer case.

What front driveshaft did you use. I cant believe how much different information there is out there about this and wiring. Even for these two years ive found people posting how they wired their clutch switch and cruise cancel in and the wiring at the trans plug colors are different. Or that they re used both of their driveshafts.
My issue is only now my existing front driveshaft is roughly an inch and a quarter too long.

So i bought a driveshaft from ebay for a 96 to 2000 3.4 5 speed 4x4 and its waaaaay short. Overall length on it was under 25 inches. Even fully extended still a couple inches short. What did the people that did this same swap use? Worse case i have to go to a driveshaft shop and have it cut down. Just none close by. Thanks for any help!!

Well, decided to take a better look this morning at the driveshaft issue. When I say I would have bet the house on the front original driveshaft not working in my swap I mean it. I compressed it until i heard what i felt was it bottoming out. I decided to pull the slip joint apart and take some measurements. Well quickly realizing there was quite a bit left for it to compress, i dug a bunch of greas out of it, and removed the zerk fitting. Slowly compressed it and what do ya know it works. Only issue is the fact it was so rusty i had to hit it with some emery cloth to smooth it up bit theres some craters. Ill have to keep an eye on it to see how bad grease comes out. If its an issue ill order a new one.

I bought this ND-36SOL kit last summer from Amazon and was just getting around to pulling the starter on my '96 automatic. I was a bit taken aback when I opened the package - serves me right for not opening it upon arrival. At least I looked before I removed the starter.

For anyone who's used this kit, does this look like it came with extra, perhaps used parts?

No bag, just loose parts in a box.

According to the description and image from Amazon I get the feeling I've received someone's used parts.

I didn't use the kit, I bought Denso parts from Amayama, but those parts do look used (at least some of them). Doesn't look like the contacts are worn though, that's the important thing.

The important thing is that once again, I should've gone with my gut and ordered the right parts to begin with. I'll blame it on youth - hell, I was younger when I ordered those parts last June, right?

I ordered from PartSouq since Amayama couldn't get my order here before my trip next month. Neither Amayama nor PartSouq had the starter gasket but surprisingly my local dealership did online for $2.50. Today I picked up the return spring and an o-ring for the trans dipstick from the dealership thinking I was going to knock this out today.

UPS just dropped off my last Amayama order with the rest of the hoses and clamps for the heater control valve project so at least I have something to do while I wait for this shipment.

Anyone have the part number for OEM inner CV boots? Both my red high angle boots have torn in less than 2 years, and at $80 a piece... Well I think it's reasonable to expect a little more out of them. So I'm thinking I'll just stretch the OEM ones to save money
Even my inner boots from CVJ are cracking pretty heavily. What BS :ranger:

My go-to used to be partsouq, but now I use TOYOTA | Japan Parts EU almost exclusively. Their diagrams, once you get to them, are easier to read than partsouq, IMO.
