I'd start diagnosing the misfire first. Could be any of these - injector, plug wire, plug,
head gasket...

When does it misfire? Only when cold? Hot? Always? Antifreeze smell out the tailpipe?

P1135 is the computer complaining it's getting no signal from the AFR sensor.

Need advice on a odd issue p1135

So I picked up a 2002 SR5 2wd a few months ago. Has been running fine until about a week ago. Started running rough and getting bad fuel millage. No CEL but I ran codes anyway. (Think my CEL may be burned out) it's got a p1135 p0306 as well as a random misfire code. It's a Cali spec vehicle apparently but, so no biggie replace the AF sensor right, easy day. Well apparently the previous owner cut the exhaust foward of the sensor and cat an welded a new straight pipe up to the muffler. No bungs for the AF sensor or rear O2 sensor and the sensors are not there. What I really don't get is how this thing ran fine before and why is it running like crap now. And of course what the best remedy for my situation? I also live in a place where it will not be doing inspections. Idk if it's possible to throw a computer tune at it or what. Could really use some advice. Thanks

It seems to have a constant misfire, oil is clear as well as coolant. I was thinking that the p1135 and an inability to read fuel levels would cause misfires, but being that the sensors have been missing since who knows when I guess working on the source of the misfire makes more sense.
 
I'm installing a stage 1 2" Bilstien lift on my 3rd gen. I was wondering if it's required/recommended that you swap out a longer brake hose in the rear to account for additional height. I've seen people install 2" lifts on 3rd gens without doing so but I thought I'd ask the experts. I'm leaning towards putting a longer one in just to be on the safe side but I'd appreciate any advice you guys might have. Thanks.
 
2001 SR5 help needed

2001 SR5. 187,000 miles. Started to run rough and sputter under load. Starts and idles fine.

Started with these a few days ago.
Changed plugs and one coil(due to misfire code for cylinder 3. No difference
Checked other coils- all sat. Replaced fuel filter and O2 sensor-O2 sensor code was on when truck was purchased. No difference
Checked all wires-all sat. No vacuum leaks noticed.

Today I changed 6 injectors and it did not fix the problem.

Any ideas??
 
If you're not getting any more DTC codes, your MAF may need cleaning. There are sprays just for that, remember not to touch the wire. You can test the MAF to see if it's still good by starting the engine and let it warm up, then while it's idling, disconnect the connector. If the engine turns off immediately, the MAF is probably good.

You could also have a failing fuel pump - which can be pricey so you might want to check the pressure with a gauge first.

It's possible you air intake manifold gasket is bad. I've seen this happen before. It can cause misfires and very poor acceleration particularly when towing. It's really not a bad job to do. Just unhook some vacuum lines, unbolt the the intake manifold, scrape off the old gasket and put the new one in. It could also be a bad PCV valve. As BretMann said, it could also be the MAF. I'm pretty sure your problems are air related. Good luck!
 
I've searched high and low for the dimensions of the banjo both that comes with the Wheelers Off-road Tacoma front line kit and I can't find that info anywhere.

I was doing the TBU today and replacing soft lines and lower hard lines with the Wheelers braided lines and snapped one of the banjo bolts in the caliper. (When they say only tighten to 12-14 lb-ft they mean it).

Fortunately I managed to get the stump of the bolt out, but now I need another one. Anyone know the diameter, thread pitch and length?

Upper and lower intake plenum gaskets were changed out with the injectors yesterday. I will test and clean the MAF and see what happens. Thanks.
 
Rear Window Seems "Tired"

Hello, first time post, so not super familiar with where to ask questions like this. Just purchased a 1996 SR5, in good shape, aside from a few small seat rips and the subject of this question. My tailgate window is acting strange. It seems tired. What I mean by this is that when I go to roll it down, it will go about halfway, then slowdown and quit. If I wait 30s to a minute I can go again and get the rest of the way. I took apart the lift gate to check on everything in there, and visually it seemed fine. The window works perfectly except for the above mentioned problem. Has anyone seen or heard of this before. Can't find any videos or forum threads about this issue. I figure it might have a worn out motor? Honestly I have no idea, if anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
 
Usual suspect for rear window problems is the wiring harness from the body to
the top of the tailgate. Wires break from too much flexing. Don't cut the boot.

I've had the copper strands break not the insulation, insulation stretched created a break things not always what they seem.

Anyone else notice that since around May 2023, it's impossible to click on a diagram and find the parts for 3rd gen 4runners? I assume it is the same with other models as the parts site went through a complete "rebuild".

I probably would just to be on the safe side. I did when I installed my lift. But you could probably get away without doing it. I'd just rather be safe than sorry.

I have a 1999 4runner SR5 with the non sport seats. Per the pictures of the driver's seat, anyone know what the toggle switch on the left front side does?

Wires go from the switch to the flat brown vinyl bag pinned under the seat bottom. I've never seen this in the much more common sport seats, so I'm confused.
