Need some advice on possible IAC replacement
Hello all,
It's been a while since I have made a post in this fourm. Since I graduated to a 4th gen v8 4x4 haha. But I need some advice on a possible IAC replacement on my old truck (1998 4runner 3.4 2wd) I ended up selling it to my close buddies girlfriend and she has been enjoying it since. I still get to see it often which makes me happy. It Was sad to have to sell but I needed the money for my 4G. But anyways to the point. She has been having issues with her truck maintaining idle usually only on start up. What happens is you start it and it starts up good and fine for a second or so but then will either die or it will have a really low idle like at 400 ish rpm. I can hear its a bad low idle because it doesn't sound right. The truck will function otherwise fine. It's random when it does it but to get it to run normal you just give it some gas and spike the rpms above 1k + and then it winds back down and it acts and runs like normal, no low idling afterwards. When I had the truck I did a whole overhaul while doing the valve cover gaskets (knock sensors, clean the carbon from the intake plenums, new injectors, spark plugs etc.) One of the things I did during that job was remove the IAC from the throttle body and cleaned it to the best of my ability. But I am starting to think that it is going bad and that is what is causing her hard start / weird low idling issue. So what do y'all think? I think it is the IAC and I read a couple threads on here of people who had a similar issue who said it was the IAC. But I want to be sure it is before she drops 150-300 on a new one to try and fix the issue. Thank you guys

I have a 1997 4Runner v6 4x4 that is having transmission problems.
When in D it would appear to be in 4th gear. Check engine light popped for a bad solenoid. I replaced the solenoid, the CEL is gone, but I am still having the same problem.
It is possible to manually change the gears but it does not shift in D.
Any ideas?
At this point I have lost faith in my mechanic but I live in Central America and there are not many options. He said he has reviewed all the electrical and it was fine. Unfortunately he can;t find a valve body here so the 2 options would be buy and ship one from the US or buy a whole used transmission here.

I'd give cleaning another go. After you think its clean, make sure you move the shutter through its whole range to make sure it moves easily and is clean behind it where gunk can build up. If it does get replaced, keep the old part... just in case.

Thanks Charlie. When I had cleaned it I had moved the shutter and I probably wasted at least a can of brake clean when I was doing it haha. even got a tooth brush and picks as well. I know they are hard to clean. She is just going to buy a new one. Well see what happens haha.

Hi I got a 00 4runner guy said it was blown up 3.4 I got it to start and it was running really rough changed out the IAC, MAF, coils (not plug wires), spark plugs, and fuel filter. Getting codes for MAF, running lean, and miss fire on cylinders 1-2-3-4. Any ideas what it could be?

I'd educate yourself on the causes of a miss fire by going to YT. Throwing money at it may not be the best solution!!

Thank you! Just trying to follow what I've seen with chasing gas spark and air i watch alot of videos it has to be like a vacuum leak cause im lean and the air is probably confusing the motor witch can cause misfire. I appreciate the time answering!
Misfire codes are calculated by the computer. Troubleshooting these codes can mean firing up the OBD-II scantool and look at the long term and short term fuel trims. This is why I suggested you look at YT videos on how to properly diagnose these codes vs guessing. The waveforms from OBD-II will show you if you're too lean or too rich and when this happens. This is a confusing subject to us amateurs.
I use a smoke machine to see which vac hoses are leaking. At the very least, find out which hoses are leaking, then replace them and see if your codes return. Unmetered air is no bueno as you know!

Buzzing noise while accelerating in 96’
In my 96 4Runner I’ve got an odd buzzing noise while accelerating or even when stopped at a light. Just wondering what this could be. Is it the notorious evap canister buzz? From what I’ve heard that is only after the engine is off and not while driving. Thanks in advance for any advice!!

I’m new here and having the 4x4 issue with the multi mode system. It will go in and out of 4x4 with the push button about 50% of the time. The rest of the time it just flashes on the dash. I’ve replaced the front actuator and actually had my transmission shop split the t-case and replace the motor. Neither worked. Any suggestions for next steps or recommendations for shops in Virginia??

Keep exercising it... 50% will turn into 75%, then 100%. Do it multiple times each drive when you have a straight section of road at reasonably slow speeds. Also make sure it goes all the way to 4H-locked too.

If this is still an issue, Make sure you are wired correctly If you are, plug wires can cause all kinds of issues. Did you check compression when you had the plugs out? I did all the stuff and it was the injectors in the end. Damn factory injectors only lasted for 250k.

Hey y'all, I'm looking for some running boards for my 02 Sport Edition.
I removed the OEM boards, and while I like the look without them, I'm thinking of getting a set that gives more of a rugged look. Right now she's a pavement princess but not for much longer lol. Specifically, I'm hoping to find a set that doesn't require any drilling or welding, and just bolts on to the original mounting points. Thanks!

Do you want steps (body mounted) or rock sliders (frame mounted)? At this point, I don't think there are any bolt-on steps available. There are definitely no bolt-on sliders since there are no appropriate bolt holes on the frame.

01 4runner vibration while accelerating
I just made this account to ask this question so i am unable to start a new thread, so my girlfriends 01 4runner has begun having a vibration thats getting noticeably worse only while accelerating after letting off the throttle it smooths out instantly, doesn't appear to be specific gear related or engine roughness. There is also a noticeable thud when starting from a standstill occasionally but not constantly.
Ive seen suggested a carrier bearing but appears the 01 model year doesnt have a carrier bearing, if its the u-joints i take it replacing the whole drive shaft is the better option? is there a slip yoke would that go bad?
