The 5th Gen is a beast in the snow.

Even in 2WD it's not that bad in the snow imo. With the stock tires, in Western New York. Never thought I would say that.

Well I did it! Got stuck in 16-20 inches of snow. I thought it was 10 or so deep. No big deal just had to dig out. I told my wife I needed to invest in some New more aggressive tires, to which she called BS to!! ha

I have Duratracs and have not noticed any loss in mpg. I drive from San Jose up to Lake Tahoe a couple times per month. I average 18.8 on the way up and about 24.0 on the way back. All at 65-75 mph. I do notice the improved handling and have yet to have my traction control kick in. They do hum, but I like driving a truck so I don't care.

Probably because you're doing mostly highway driving. There's 2 load ratings on the Duratrac 265's. The lower rated one is 5 pounds heavier than stock and the higher rated one is 11 pounds heavier than the stock AT20's (39 pounds each). I can't imagine that you wouldn't see a significant mpg loss with +11 pounds per wheel.

During the week days I do 100% surface streets....no freeway. 17.8 avg. I run them at 38psi.

duratracs will prob be my next set of tires. Lots of guys on here say good things about them. I still have another 10k miles to go on these nittos ( have put 35k on them), and spring is 3 weeks around the corner here. But I was alittle disappointed that these tires tread filled up so easily and basically became slicks on me. Snow like this is very rare around here. Usually nothing more than 6 inches falls at a time.

No issues, or significant gas mileage drop with my C rated Duratracs. ANY real AT tire is going to weight more than the crappy stock tires! Pretty darn quiet too, no complaints.

My Nitto's were good for about the first 10k miles, then started to suck. The Duratracs have been a great tire for me, especially in Denver and around the mountain areas.

I also like the looks of the Goodyear Authority Walmart sells.

The 4Runner is a snow destroyer! I feel totally safe in this tank. Drove it to Colorado last week with lots of snow. Snowed every day I was in Colorado. The thing just totally rocks. I admit I also have brand new Blizzaks on it...

Great description of the 4Runner in snow! Finally, we got a good snow in Colorado and I was looking forward to my daily 40mile commute (this time in the snow). I also put snows on the 4Runner (Michelin X-Ice). All prepared for the morning commute....walk out into the garage.... and the wife has taken the 4Runner for her 2 mile trip to work. Ohhh well got to drive the Bronco :(

Cheers

nope. i believe the speed-centric thing is that button will turn off VSC—only VSC—if you're traveling under 35. you have to be stopped and hold the button down to turn off both VSC and TRAC. :driving:

too bad this is not like my subaru legacy, all i have to do is push a button on/off to do the same thing regardless of speed.

comes in real handy at intersections in town that have a slight incline from a stop light that is covered in ice/snow. i just mash the pedal and watch all the nannies kick in for those that are fwd, awd/4wd wannabe's (im looking at you my late rav4)

i guess i will just have to live with it either being on or off when i leave the house in the wintertime.

edit: yes i know i resurrected a dead thread, but it did answer my question on how to turn off the nannies. too bad, i will miss the button in the surbaru when i moved to a '14 LE.

In my experience you can turn off TRAC and VSC any time. Press button once and TRAC is off but it will be back when your speed is over 35mph. Hold the button 3 sec and TRAC and VSC are off for good. Will be back on either when you push the button again or when you start the engine. Not sure how it works on '14 models though.

I guess that's as close as I can get compared to my Subaru. it wouldn't be an issue if the middle of the city wasn't in a valley. I live on the south side of the valley wall so I have to deal with hills getting home and going to work.

to get to work I have to go up a big hill (which has a red light at the bottom, about 2/10 mile long which curves to the right the near the bottom and then curves left about 1/2 way up) to get to work which is the main road thru town.

I have to turn off my nannies going up that hill in the wintertime with the ice/snow at 6am (before the sanding trucks come out) and trying to dodge fwd and/or fake 4wd/awd vehicles cause they lose momentum.

this past winter I had to use the median (warden's Tacoma) to get around the log jam of cars that was spinning the wheels cause they lost momentum and I didn't want to lose mine and get stuck in that mess. boy did I freak out the wife and daughter with that move heading to a friends house.

turning off both TRAC and VSC, by holding down the button for ~3 secs, only works when the vehicle is stopped; both will then remain deactivated irrespective of vehicle speed or until you hit the button again. (this is how it works on my '10, anyway.)

as you said, you can turn off TRAC only by hitting the button when your speed is under 35 mph, however, it will automatically reactivate itself when your speed exceeds ~35 mph.

in my previous posts in this thread i had mistakenly written that you can deactivate VSC-only when i meant TRAC. the only way to deactivate VSC is to also deactivate TRAC by holding down the button for ~3 secs when stopped.

:nerd:

it would be aweseome if you could turn it off/on at will instead of only at the start of your drive.

better than nothing :)
