long time ago: In Fort Worth TX had a snow/ice storm. Made it to work no problem while a bunch of cars/trucks were in the ditch and more struggling up hills.
Recently: this past weekend helped my sister's boyfriend move to Minneapolis by hauling his stuff in the uhaul. After dropping off the uhaul we all took my 4R To grab a bite, merged into highway traffic by mashing the skinny pedal and "launched" the 4R and somebody chuckled and asked V8? I said V6 and he said wow sounds like V8. Take that 4th gen owners!

I will just say everyday!! Whether in getting in my 4RUNNER or my Tundra, it makes my day!

That's hard to pinpoint guess from day one and everyday after that.
I recall last summer on our vacation trip to parts below Miami, FL, we ran into a really bad rain storm just above Boca Raton where water was pooling on the turnpike. Cars were hydroplaning, or crawling..... no in-between!
Same thing happened driving back through Miami and again around Boca.
Remember, I live in south Louisiana, so we see rain like this all the time.
I put it in 4Hi and drove it as the conditions allowed without any hydroplaning or adverse situations.
Putting it in 4Hi in these situations, IMHO, gives you more controllability. Some may differ, and that is their opinions which I respect.

It wasn't an emergency by any means, but I really appreciated it when I was leaving this year's expo. The roads were soupy and lots of rigs--built jeeps, campers, full size trucks--were needing tows/pulls. I didn't want to be in that group, nor did I want to get extracted by a Rover or Jeep! My buddy's built FJ and my 4Runner wriggled their way out without a problem.

I'm glad that I own my 4Runner every day, but the best moment happened during my first week of ownership.
It was this past February, Cleveland was experiencing heavy snow and subzero conditions. One of the jobs that my company was working was a boat house right on Lake Erie, so we would usually drive through to the backyard and park the work truck there (4x4 GMC 2500HD). This day, however, the snow was maybe 8" all around and there were 4'-5' drifts. My coworker should have known better, but he tried to drive to the back yard and got the truck very stuck. We tried all sorts of ways to get it out, digging, sheets of plywood, adding weight, and 4lo with no luck.
One of our contractors offered to use his F350, but I told him I had it. We hooked the recovery strap to the 2500HD and to my recovery hook, I put my 4Runner in 4Lo, and was able to pull it right out. It didn't even feel like I was doing anything.
Everyone there was extremely impressed, especially me.

I have owned numerous, good 4WD vehicles. And some excellent ones.
Living in Colorado you learn that fine line between "good" in snow and ice and "excellent" in snow and ice. Then we throw in some off-road prowess and the bar goes higher on expectations.
#1 One pick: Sixth 4Runner is in in the family. Seventh if you count my kid who just bought a 2015 SR5 last week. There is a reason why.
#2 Pick: Domestic - 1998 Dodge 1500 Sport shorty 4x4. It was very capable out of the box but the motor (old school 318/5.2L) sucked. With a 5 speed though I still got that truck into places most would not go and managed to do it without a scratch (mostly )
But hands down. 4Runner baby.

I've got awesome trails less than 30 minutes from my house here in Phoenix and I never have to wear anything heavier than a light jacket. I also don't have to worry about corrosion, salt, and some jackass plowing into the side of me because he was driving to fast for conditions.
(No, I just have to worry about dumb females talking on their cell phones and ignoring the red light in front of them....)
