The LFD Off Road Thread

Just update on my LFD full roof rack, it was rusting pretty bad after roughly a year (steel version), so I contacted them and they sent me out two aluminum side rails no cost. I noticed that all their roof racks say “rust free” in the description which I thought was odd. They definitely had a horrible batch from powder coating as all my cross bars are completely rusted and chipping powder coat, i might just scrap the entire rack and just get their overland crossbars as i have a roofnest falcon installed, and Roam awning.

I noticed the full length aluminum rack was removed from their webstore. I still see the regular steel full rack, and now there's a separate item listing for a stainless steel full rack at the price of the outgoing aluminum.

That blows that you had to deal with so much rust. Nice gesture for LFD to send you aluminum rails. What about running the new rails and putting some higher quality powder coat onto your existing crossbars?

What can I say? ...I'm a fan of great products. :biggrin2:

Besides, my SSO sliders are great (I got them back 3 years ago), but I'm that guy - the one that wishes everything on his truck was from one place... That place just happens to be LFD Off Road.

...but I am saving up for the compressor mount first. I have got to get my compressor out of my storage area.

What compressor are you going to mount? I'm wondering if a Viair 450 will fit on this mounting plate. I've reached out to LFD but no one has responded for days.

Interesting... I'm at just over 2 years and have absolutely no rust on my rack or any of the 10 crossbars. Things that I have attached to the rack have rusted, but the rack/powder coat itself has been solid. FWIW, also at just over 14 months with my LFD rear bumper and the powdercoat on that has withstood everything I've thrown at it, aside from dragging the bottom on some rocks, but that is to be expected.

If I was keeping the truck I was strongly considering switching to the minimalist rack simply because of the PITA it was to attach my CVT Mt Hood, and the fact that I can mount accessories (awning, lights) to the tent. Alas, as soon as my bed rack is built for the new truck, the 4Runner will be for sale (LFD Full length rack and LFD rear bumper included lol)

My guess is LFD had a bad batch of powder coat and/or had to change who they were using. That’s why they were quick to send me the aluminum replacements no charge, and also why they now state “rust free” on all their racks...seems redundant to have to specify rust free, unless there was issues previously.

On another note, I switched over to their curved wind fairing and noticed awful wind noise even at low speeds, so i added the Prinsu style rubber door seal off Amazon and it was minimized drastically. It also seals the fairing against the roof and all but erases the gap.

My LFD Rack and Attachments

Here is my 7/8th LFD with Track Boards, Hi-Lift, and Fuel Packs.

Here is the way that I attached the Hi-Lift. I used the Hi-Lift mount for a Jeep and tossed the riser. The hole in the crossbar is just about the right size to fit the bolt through and use a nut to hold it in place. The top plate and wing nut work great.

Good info about the rubber seal to deal with wind noise. I'll pick some up to use with the curved fairing.

really wanting to receive my coveted curved fairing. I've been chatting with someone at LFD through FB. The fairing was missed in my order which was placed back in November. Update on when my curved fairing will be shipped please?

LFD_Off_Road will a Viair 450 fit on your compressor mounting plate?

You may want to wait for an official answer (if they have one, I can't say I know of anyone using a 450C for OBA). I have a 450P automatic that I used on the 4Runner, but it lived in a bag, not under the hood.

Just looking at the dimensions...

Viair 450C
10.5"L x 3.94"W x 6.87"H

ARB Single (CKMA12)
7.5"L x 3.9"W x 5.7"H

The Viair's mounting pattern is 8.375" x 3.31"

The ARB's mounting pattern is 2.76" x 2.2"

Based on their photos, you would need to create some sort of adapter bracket to bolt the Viair to, and then bolt that to the mount. It looks like there may be another 3" in the longitudinal orientation, and there may also be enough if you mount it transversely, but again you would still need the interfacing bracket. Depending on how you do the adapter, the extra 1.17" in height may start to become a factor with hood clearance

The "Rust Free" is only for the full stainless steel racks. Regular steel racks can still rust, though hopefully not as fast. We've been working with our powder coaters to improve longevity of the coatings with different prep steps.

We've discontinued aluminum for stainless steel due to the issues right now with getting raw aluminum. Its availability is all over the place right now. We use tons of stainless steel in our other divisions so we typically have more of that on hand and constantly coming in.

Glad adding that seal helped the noise. Its weird that some have that issue. I ran a curved for a year on my 4R, including the 5,000 mile road trip this past year with no issue, and none of the guys here with fulls have had it either.

Hopefully sometime this week. We've been having delays getting stuff back from powder coating. :/

LFD_Off_Road will a Viair 450 fit on your compressor mounting plate?

The plate is pretty easy to work with. I managed to fit my old Viair 300P on it. I am currently looking at the possibility of mounting this under one of the bumper covers.

Thank you for the info; that helps somewhat. If the plate is big enough I would just drill new holes.

Based on this, it appears a 450 might be too large for this compressor plate. Also, where did you find that rubber cover for the male air hose connection?

LFD_Off_Road any update on the gas tank skid?

We've got four completely redesigned ones going through welding this week, and then next week one of our employees is heading out to Moab with it installed for vacation. We'll see how it does on his trip.
