The Smokey Build

When I said that it was hitting the adapter plate I was referring to the adapter from FROR for the Full Float rear setup and it didn't matter which rotor I was using it was going to hit the ears on the adapter. The Adapter is designed to use a front solid axle caliper and disk which is not a hat but bolted to the hub. But both the Montaro and the 4th gen disks are hats and sit much deeper over the hub.

OK, got you - from what you're seeing, could the Mustang rear caliper (e-brake) be used with the front axle disc that was intended to be used with the kit (spacing aside, I mean)?

Yes, I would say that it would for sure. In fact along that line I bet that the fj60 front rotor would work. it is slightly larger and is a common upgrade for the front of the solid axle guys, but is paired with the ifs v6 caliper, so the mustang caliper should match well also. The other option is to find a set of supra rear calipers which is what the adapter is designed to use as it has the same bolt spacing as well as an ebrake. Or all of this can be avoided and just use the new D-Rotor setup that FROR now offers which uses the ebrake setup from a 4th gen which is pretty sweet as well.

Doesn't the Drotor add like 3.5 inches of width, though?

Wait a second; still wrapping my head around this stuff, so bear with me: could you have used the solid axle disc with the Mustang caliper? Is the throat on the caliper compatible with the width of that disc?

yes for sure as far as thickness of the Rotor. The solid axle rotor is only about half an inch thick whereas the Montero is just over an inch and 4th Gen rotors are just under 3/4 of an inch. So actually the 4th gen is the best fit for the mustang calipers, the montero rotors were slightly tight in the throat and they work but it took some time to get the caliper mount shimmed perfectly so it would be truly centered. The other consideration is that each of the rotors has a different outside diameter so that would affect your caliper mount building as well.

This might help.

Also incase you haven't seen it here is where all of this began. I think that there could be some confusion because I have done the rear brakes in two different ways, disc conversion then updating to full float.

Merry Christmas!!

Not a huge update but a needed one. For almost the last year I have been without a front grill. like a dummy I had my 1 ton roll back into Smokey breaking not only the grill but the tabs on the headlights that hold the grill on. So I finally ordered new headlights, corner lights and tail lights (might as well while I was at it), and a new grill.

Got the headlights and corner lights installed as well as the taillights. Got the grill painted a nice charcoal metallic which I think is a nice accent to the black.

On another note I got the insert for the hood scoop painted. Then all that is really left if front and rear bumpers.

So yesterday was my birthday. And I have the best wife in the world. Last year she surprised me with a sport hood. And this year she gave me a card with a certificate from her to get any front bumper I want. So, AddictedOffroad got a call and in 4 to 6 weeks I will have the sweetest plate bumper avalable in my carport ready to go on. I may add some BigFishAllDay bling to it. :biggrin2:

That's gonna be a great look. Happy Birthday!

Ya happy late birthday! Addicted has my favorite front bumper fairly easily. I wish they supported a body lift, but sadly I'll have to make my own.

We need to get some wheeling in soon! Although I'll probably buy duals after watching you hahaha

Thanks it's gonna be a great year.

We do need to get out and wheel soon. I'm loving the 37's on your rig. I've almost worn out my 35's so you never know. But I'm afraid that 37's would speed the need for a solid axle. and I really can't afford that right now.

BTW Ive got a a set of duals sitting waiting to go in the 2000 we picked up. :lookout:

Hoping to pick up a set of early toyota cases for passenger side drop. Then just get an adapter from Marlin.

This thread is awesome, your 3rd gen is awesome, maybe one day I can get my bucket runner something close to that. Alas, it's just 1in up in the rear to compensate for saggy bottom, and 31x10.5's
I try to budget, but the more I add to what I want to do with my 91, it all seems so damn expensive. I know it doesn't happen over night though.
Cheers!

Thank you! Its been a fun build. And I know how at the beginning it seems overwhelming but get out and wheel and have fun. What these rigs can do in near stock trim is amazing.

Nice build and thanks for taking the time to document it.

I came here researching a dual case set-up. I've been doing a lot of that the past week. Then I saw that post I quoted above. Did they ever get installed?

I've got a 97 Auto with a J-shift. A few other question I have for you are:

Did you have to clearance or refab the rear crossmember to fit the duals?
Are you happy with the 2.28/2.28?

Thanks man.

Thank you I have enjoyed building this rig. I personally think that the 2.28/2.57 are perfect, with a supercharged 3.4 and 5speed I have not found a single place that I wished I had a lower gear. I haven't got the duals installed into the 2000 yet. Just here in the 98 and I didn't have to modify the crossmember. But that being said both the 98 and the 2000 are 5 speeds so there is a little more room. Not sure if you've seen this but may be a good place to ask lots of questions.
