I have to say that I love the avalanche look on our 4runners. there are a bunch over on Pirate4x4.com that have done it. mostly 2nd gens but it would be sweet. Personally I would do a SAS first to get the truck really preforming off road the way I would want. But this is a close second for me on mods. I love wheeling my 85 with the top off.:surfer:

Stupid 4runner!!!!! I can't count how many times i've heard that. Everytime my gf says anything about my 4runner stupid 4runner is in there somewhere lol. Girls just don't get it. If you can get this done for 2 grand I'm gonna start searching for body shops to get quotes. I hope your able to do this mod. Keep us updated!

Would it be possible for you to do some of the work? Maybe you could cut off the back end yourself and maybe even weld the rear hatch back on. That way the shop wouldn't be doing as much work. Just the finishing steps and to make it look professional. May fit closer into your price range. This may not be an option for ya but figured id throw the idea out there.

Yeah, I have thought of trying to do it myself, but I am not sure about my skills to tackle this. And when I look inside at all the plastic molding, headliner, and everything, it makes my head spin trying to figure out how I am modify all that to make it fit right.

What I need is a practice 4runner body to try out my skills! haha

IF you are looking at the full soft top, you might want to think it over, as the custom soft top alone (atleast a good Badger one) will fetch $2k+.

You'd be better off finding a small place that makes custom boat covers to do the soft top. They would probably still be pretty pricey, but not $2K.

Well I haven't forgotten about this thread, and I did get a quote recently. $6,000.00 was the estimate for everything. They said when they were done it would look like it came from the factory with no detail left unfinished. I saw some of their work and I have no doubt they could do this, and it would be awesome; but I just cant afford it.

What if you did some of the prep work yourself? Ask them how much it would be if you removed the hatch and pulled the rear interior, possibly also do the rear sawzall work and ask them how much just the body and paint work will be.

on a job like this your not looking at much a discount and to be honest they would probably only let you get away with pulling the interior, this would be quick work for them anyways and would actually cost them more time to fix your unskilled cuts and not having everything marked out to fit correctly in the first place . at the very most your looking at saving maybe $500 bucks doing all the prep work you can, that's the easy stuff.... again unless you can do all this work yourself your better off just buying a tacoma and calling it good, cheapest anyone would do this would be in the 3-4k range and that's if it's pretty much family. and i still think you can pick up a decent taco or 2nd gen 4runner with removable top for about that and your wife/girlfriend would be far more happy with that becuase that means she would get to drive the 4runner from time to time....just saying :bluejump:

A few weeks back I helped a buddy cut off the back of his Suburban. Spent about 10 mins planning it out and 30 min cutting it off with a grinder and sawzall.

Unfortunately, he hasnt really made any arrangements for a soft top yet. Soon, the rainy Oregon weather will return for many months and he will have a truck full of water unless he figures something out.

I think his plan is to have a roll bar made up and use that for a soft top frame. He will install snaps to secure a top that he has an upholstery shop make for him.

I asked about doing a little work myself and they did not like the idea; and I knew they probably wouldn't. Only because they said it would be easier, and the quality of work would turn out better, if they did the job from start to finish; in fact he said I could make things more difficult for them if I did some of the work myself and it probably wouldn't save me enough money to really make a difference. So I think I will just hold off on this mod, its just not in the budget anymore at the price I was quoted.

^^ Agreed. My buddies Suburban is older and has over 300k on it. It was pretty beat down with dents and bad paint/primer. He loves the thing and will never sell it, but realistically its not worth more than $1500 or so.

Unless your going to do it right, 4runners are a little to nice to hack up.

I would wait till I rolled and the insurance company paid to total the vehicle, then buy it back and bring it in and have this done. It looks cooler with dents throughout the body anyway, HAHAHA!!!

Just a hard removable top from 2nd row and back. You can still keep the second row doors and build it similar to the 1st gen but almost have a Jeep Wrangler feel to it.

Page 2 post #28 has the top chopped right behind the B pillar but with a soft top but a removeavble hard top would be really cool.

And there was a chopped 4 runner on the cover of a 4 wheeling magazine I get. Ill take a pic of it when i get home and post it. I don't remember the name of it at the moment..
