I totally agree that the pedal rate doesn't match the acceleration rate that I was used to in my 08'. I don't think it's a power or torque issue, but the new drive by wire accelerator pedal calibration just does not feel like a conventional cable throttle. Combine that with the dual VVT-i and it is a very strange feeling user interface. The sad part is we will never see old fashioned mechanical throttle linkage in a production vehicle again.
Yup, it is all about gas mileage. If you got instant throttle response, you'd likely be around 14mpg.
I gotta say that I'm thrilled to death with the gas mileage in my 4Runner.
24mpg from SW WV to NC and 23mpg on the return. :reddance:

I think that T4R Toyota advertised mileage can be reached if you use gas with no ethanol, don't go over 2000 rpm, don't do any external mods and drive on flat surface. 16.5 sounds strange - I had 17.8 mpg (13.2 l/100km) last winter in mostly city driving.

The moral of the story here really is that, altough there is such a diverse automotive market out there, it is very hard to find something on the larger end of the mid-size SUV pack that is truck based, has true 4wd, is spacious and comfortable, can make a good daily driver, and is priced mostly between 30-40K.
The Xterra is too small
The Grand Cherokee is a CUV and is still too small in comparison
GX - way too expensive
LX- see above, plus too big
Explorer - is a CUV, is FWD based, and is ugly
Yukon/tahoe/suburban - all way too big
sequoia/armada - see above
FJ -too small and way too ugly
Landcruiser - way too expensive and big (yet quite awesome)
H2- too small, too expensive, usless with the base engine
H3 - too big, too expensive, too flashy
Wrangler - too much minivan motor, rides like crap on road
Borrego - Really? do i need to explain. (it's not up to the level of the newest Kias and Hyundais
G-wagon- a little pricey, to say the least.
Pathfinder- too old of a platform, needs an update, back seat too cramped
That should cover most of 'em - except all the crossovers out there, which are not even being considered.

I left the explorer in there, since it just moved off a truck platform. I stand corrected on the H2/H3 issue.
point is, very little matches the 4runner in most categories

i mean there are a few things i wish i could change on my 5th gen. At the end of the day no truck/car is going to be perfect. I loved my X-terra, but, still didn't like a few things about it. Same thing with the 4runner, hate a few things, love the rest. Give and take.

Jeeez. I don't get it. Mine gets as bad as 13 mpg (around 17 L/100km) and even with a few long highway trips barely break 16. Also checked with my local gas station and they say they don't use ethanol blended gas...

I have not looked at my MPG recently so I reset it a couple weeks ago, pushed through about 3/4 a tank and was surprised to see 17 MPG....considering I have been pushing the 4R hard lately! Around town, stop and go, sport mode, bringing it to 4k + before shifting.

I've been looking at a lot of SUVs. The 4runner and Xterra for 2011 are very close in size. Both are very nice, but the 4runner is available with many more options, but at additional costs. Both are bigger than my current 2001 Xterra. Currently the new 4runner is #1 on my list with the Xterra #2. did just drive the new Explorer too, but it is very car like, but also similar in size.
