Tire Fit: 285/75/17, no body lift & V6... Possible?

I have the toytec ultimate coilovers from toytec which give about 3" of lift.
Toytec Ultimate Coilovers
From hub to fender is 24"

Damn, that is a lot of lift up front!

I'm running 295/70/17 Cooper STT Pros and no bodylift. I have extended travel Icon's with Total Chaos UCA's.

Currently the coilovers are set to about 2" of lift and I do not rub at all even at full compression. Pinch weld fold/mod and bodymount chop done as well as trimming the bottom of the front flares. This will change though depending on Caster and wheel backspacing. I am running a pretty agressive wheel fitment which contributes to my flare trimming. Caster is at +3.4 IIR on my last alignment.

Pics of the trimming required in my build thread. I suspect the 285/75/17 to be easier to fit though...

Thanks for chiming in, I was hoping you would. Looked through your build and could not tell if you did the body lift or not, now I feel even better about the size.

Looks like we have very similar setups suspension wise, I also have massive rake from the LT coils, I feel like MT does not advertise them correctly. I had to carry 300 lbs of sand, CBI rear swing away w/ camp table, hi-lift and STILL had a decent amount of rake with my Icons at approximately 2.5... Crazy.

where did you cut with a grinder?

You can see the two cuts in the photo of my pinchweld above. Just "slits" perpendicular to the pinch weld to make it easier to fold over.

Damn, that is a lot of lift up front!

Yah no bodylift will be going on mine. I'm quite certain with a little more massaging I could get 35s under it. I am liking this 295 tire size though... Great happy medium.

I'll have to check your build. I love the way the MT rear rides but agree, it is way too tall. Know if there is a lower progressive rear coil option?

No build yet! Had a 3rd gen but never got around to starting a build thread. Same thing kinda happened with this build.

I do not know of any better options, I was thinking about going the route dawgrunner (I think that is his name) did with custom coils. With all the money I have spent its a small upgrade for proper coils. I do not mind the MT coils at all... once loaded down of course. Flex and ride is great on trails. I may just stick with them. I do hate having to carry all that extra weight thou.

Now you have me thinking about 295s instead... Damn it! Lol, I am probably overthinking it...

I am so glad you chimed in awesomesauce! This is exactly what I needed to see. You are the first person to give me a definitive answer, much appreciated.

Looks like I am going to pull the trigger...

1. From your build thread it looks like you do not have adjustable rear links (control arms)?

2. Did you do the body mount chop and/or pinch weld modifications?

3. Would you happen to know your caster? This seems to be another factor in most builds I have seen.

Thanks in advance
For what it is worth...
1. I dont have adjustable rear control arms, I do need to put extended links on the sway bar to get full flex.
2. I have done both BMC and beat the pinch weld.
3. I had my alignment done to close to factory specs.

I do have Camburg uniball upper control arms which is a game changer. you dont realize how much your suspension was bound up till you get aftermarket UCAs on...

Once I change out the rear links I could probably stuff the rear more but now there is more room...

The front tries to pull the driver side fender off every now and again... but that could be corrected by a better alignment.

Hey guys,

Before anyone gets upset at a fitment question, I have spent a couple weeks trying to find the answers. Can't seem to find a definitive answer and I don't wanna be caught with too much extra work or crazy rubbing. Searched as many forums as I could as well as google.

ALSO this is a fitment question for 285/75/17 NOT 285/70/17!

I have an 05 V6 - Icon 2.5s all around with rear metaltech long travel, CBI bumpers front and rear. No body lift. Already running 285/70/17 Duratracs, minimal rub on body mount.

1) At stock 3.73 gears, will my V6 have a hard time? The 285/70/17s definitely have an effect, but will an extra inch really see big change? When I head out West, I am usually around 14 mpg with my current setup. If my MPGs are going to tank to like 10, that is probably gonna be enough to put me off. The truck is built, but it is my daily and serious wheeling trips only happen a couple times a year. Also makes me think that the extra inch may not be worth the trouble.

2) I am trying to avoid a body lift, I have seen a total chaos video on Youtube where they show how to fit the 75s on a 2nd gen Tacoma however they are demonstrating the clearance for a 285/75/16. I figured the process would be the same. From what I can tell, they only do some pinch weld/body mount work and say that will be enough.

All the builds I have seen so far have some sort of body lift, so no help there. Some 5th gen threads say that you can fit with a body chop and pinch weld cutting. Some FJ forums say its not too difficult.

Basically, I am trying too hard?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

285/75/17 with no body lift just 3” lift suspension wise. Currently 2wd with 3.73 gear ratio. A little sluggish going up hills but other than that it drives pretty solid. Only modified part I had to do myself is smash in the pinch welds to an extent and primer to avoid rust. No front bumper atm but also allows full lock on turns and whatnot. No rubbing issues whatsoever.
