tire pressure monitor question

Can someone clue me in on the tire pressure system ? Is it attached to the valve stem as I have heard. If that is the case, then I will have to make sure that when I get my new tires put on , the place I take it too knows this and doesnt replace, or touch the valves.
Can anyone confirm this ?

I believe the pressure sensor is attach to the tire stem itself and there is a receiver inside each wheel well. The receivers sends the pressure back to the controller electrically and then to your dash.

Just got new Revo's today...asked the same question to the tire shop, and they do a ton of toyota's, about the tire pressure monitors. They confirmed that yes, it is a small box attached to the stem. As long as whomever you take it to doesn't mess with the stems, then you'll be alright. Just taking their word for and didn't get to see them myself, but as of 50 miles put on after the new tires, i have yet to have a problem with the tire pressure monitoring system. Think you have to go to the dealership if you'd like to replace the stems/tpm's.

Those things are the root are most of my fustration with my 04 runner. I hate 'em. How would you like to wake up every morning with at least one flat tire? I've had mine removed and haven't had one problem since. The issue is that the stem's are made of cheap aluminum.

Yes they are attached to the valve stem on the inside of the rim.
I haven't had any problem with my tires loosing air.
