tire question - size up to 305 70 16

I have read a lot of you alls threads, and i still and confused as to what i need to do to be able to size up to 305 70 16. i am at 285 75 16. I do have the suspension lift, but i feel that i have been told so many things im not sure what the one right thing to do it is. i will say im trying to go the safest, but most affordable route.

Its just a wider 33". Trimming of the pinchweld, possibly fenders themselves, and bumper depending on what bumper your running. You may rub the upper control arm depending on the backspacing of your rim, or if you have aftermarket control arms.

You can have your alignment guy throw your caster forward to try and keep the tire out of the fender/pinchweld area too.

I appreciate the help, it all still sounds unfamiliar to me. I have slight rubbing on a full turn now, and when i reach back it definitely doesn't have another inch to spare. Does having a different type of 16 wheel make a difference, cause i plan to get new wheels as well

And what is the back spacing on the wheels you are getting?

If you are rubbing with 285s then you will rub more with 305s. They are 1 inch wider thus will be closer to your control arms if thats where you are rubbing, or they will be closer to your fenders when turning if thats where you're rubbing. Nothing a sawzal and a big hammer won't fix.:eyebrows:

i believe they are 16x7...and i think its the upper control arm right outside the top of the suspension. What would need to be hammered on? and is that safe after the fact? the trimming could be done after cause as to this point i didnt need to trim anything to fit the 285s

If it's rubbing the control arm really the best fix is wheel spacers. That's what I ran. The hammer only works on the pinch welds.

If you are buying new wheels just buy ones with less backspacing. I run a 4" backspacing wheel and would clear 305s on stock control arms.

hey man, would you be able to tell me or refer me to a site, with the exact tires i should be looking at, im trying to go to a 17x8.5 but i need that proper backspacing like you said, and i just dont understand all the numbers and information..preciate the help

you need WHEELS with the proper backspacing. Tirerack.com has backspacing and offset numbers listed for their wheels. That should help. They also have a FAQ on the numbers.

I have had no issues with the spacers. I did buy a special lug nut the went on deeper. ET Style Lug Nuts for Wheel Spacers, M12-1.5, Set of 12
