Tire weights vs load

I've been looking into the 285/70 size and trying to avoid E load vs D. Originally I was looking at the KO2 but was suggested to look at the duratracs.

The dura is D at 54lbs while the ko2 is E at 58lbs.

Given thats 8ply vs 10ply the weight sounds negligible...

The psi I assume is probably no more that 2 or 3 difference (say 42 vs 45).

Could be that the E drives harsher....

I guess my Question is...is there any real noticeable difference for those of you how have owned D and E?

Nope. The only difference I really noticed was when I changed from the stock P to an aftermarket LT tire.
After the change from D to E I noticed no difference in ride quality or on road handling. In fact, I find I have a nicer ride with my E load STT's than I did with my D load MT ATZ's at the same PSI. Noisier, yes. Harsher, no.

I think both tires would be about the same. Duratracs tend to get noisy as they wear. This is still an unknown with the new KO2. It would mostly come down to what tire you like the looks of better and price. Either tire should be fine.

It's not 8ply vs 10ply. There are no longer ply(s) in tries. That is an old rating system from back in the day of bias ply tires. Almost all tires today are made with 2 or 3 layers + cloth these days (if that). The only thing that D vs E tells you is how much pressure/load the tire can take and how hard the compound is. E will generally be stronger, but it is not 10 vs 8 ply... I had Es before and they were harsher and were not great on the road IMHO.


I have the Duratrack Ds at the moment and I feel they are a fantastic all around tire. Not loud in my opinion and pretty amazing off-road. The only time they don't perform is mud. The sidewall is strong enough for all but the most extreme situations (literally riding up creek bed on your sidewall...) For that you really need a MT class tire anyway. They do very well off-road at about 17psi. I'm actually getting a set of goodyear MTRs for more extreme offroad use. They are still a D rated load in some sizes (and even C when you get up to 37+), but that has nothing to do with the durability of them.
