So, last week my wife and I did another of our road trips back to Florida to watch some soccer and go to the beach. As some of the older members know, I do some of my best "imaginative" thinking while driving lol. Anyway, I of course did my pre trip checks that most of us do and one of the items is tire pressure. I probably do this a bit different than most of you because I note not only the pressures of each tire but also the ambient temperature. Why? Here is a simple explanation here http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=73 but suffice to say tire pressure, for us, will increase 1 psi for every 10 degrees temperature rise.

I checked my tires and gauged them to 35 psi, which is optimal for this trip and the ambient temp was 65 degrees. I always check the tires the night before (no sun heating up one side) and after the vehicle has sat for awhile so no frictional heat either. My truck was lightly loaded with about 600 lb (two people, gear, bike, dog).

My route was basically all interstate for around 700 miles. I77, I26, I95, I275 and I10 got us within 100 miles of our destination.

I pulled into a gas station in South Carolina to get fuel and boiled peanuts and decided to check the tires. I always do a tactile check when getting fuel (back of the hand held to the tread) because over the years I have driven some heavy trucks and pulled heavy trailers. Tire temperature is critical in those applications and some of that has just carried over to daily life. Anyway, because the ambient temperature was 95 degrees by then I decided to gauge the tires. Every tire was 40 psi and that was about what I expected. Max pressure on my tires is 45 psi so I was well under max.

The question is how did my tires gain 5 psi? Well, 3 psi is easily explained by simple temperature rise of 30 degrees. The other 2 psi? That came by the rolling resistance of the tires which causes friction (adhesion - coefficient is called mu) which causes the tire to heat which causes the air in the tire to expand and - *poof* 2 psi rise in pressure!

Now why did I think this warrants a thread here? Many of you will be going on vacation or long trips this summer and many of you will be carrying a much heavier load. You could be pulling a trailer (tongue weight) + all your gear and easily have an extra 1200 lbs added to the GVW of the 4Runner. Check your tire pressure! Especially those of you with more aggressive tread! It's extremely easy to add 5 psi to each tire as evidenced by my data and observation. More weight + wider aggressive tread + temperature change = a problem waiting to happen. In the 2K miles I drove last week I witnessed well over 20 vehicles with flats or blowouts. Check your pressure and make sure you can stand a 5-8 psi change in pressure and still be within spec. Hope this helps some of you.

Thanks for the warning and info on tire pressure. I've always been a little confused about whether you can/should allow the PSI to go above the max if the cause is merely change in temp or heat caused by driving. This website seems to indicate that such changes are built into the tires' specs, and there is no need to deflate the tire if the PSI is above max for one of these reasons.

Do you intentionally inflate your tire to something less than the max to allow for extra PSI due to heat caused by driving and/or ambient temp.?

Anyways, I noticed a good amount of steering wheel vibration this morning. At first, I figured it was the road I was on and ignored it. On the ride home, I felt a fraction of the vibration I felt in the morning. I immediately thought to check tire pressures. All 4 tires were at 35psi (7pm @ 75 degrees). I inflated to 38psi and the steering wheel vibration instantly vanished.

Can I assume the steering wheel vibration I experienced was a result of differences in ambient temperature or should I have it looked into for possible issues?

Apparently you found some magic air... no seriously it could have been anything. On every vehicle and every set of tires I have owned there have been times I have had what I call "transient vibration" that is unexplainable (at least to me) and happens every so often for a short duration. This vehicle is no different. It could be after the tires set for awhile, it could be the sun heated up one side of the tires, it could be the cold, it could be the road, etc.

My favorite hypothesis for transient vibration is this:
No matter how your tires are balanced or how well they are balanced they will always be slightly unbalanced right? I mean, the equipment some shops have is good but they won't take a tire to the 1/100's of an ounce! Or you pick up a stone in the tread or several tiny stones on one portion of the tire or mud on the inside of the rim. Any of these will make that specific tire slightly unbalanced but not enough to matter in normal driving. So now hold that thought.

Every tire has or could have this condition correct? Now, if you would chalk a mark on each tire at the 12 o'clock position before you leave home by the time you get to work the chances of all chalk marks being at the same position are very slim. Why? Because the tires on the outside of curves rotates farther and because of the wheelbase the tires on the front will make a wider arc than the back tires it would be pure chance the marks would be together at the end of your journey.

Because of the difference in tire rotation there will be a even chance that all tires eventually could have the, for lack of a better term, "heavy" (even if only a 1/10 of an ounce) side all touching the ground at the same time. Or the heavy side on the fronts synch up and the heavy side on the rears synch up but are at 180 degrees apart from each other. That would give you vibrations where none exist otherwise because they cancel each other out normally when they are out of phase, so to speak. If this happens on a long stretch of straight interstate though you could have that vibration for quite some time.

That is really my only explanation on why you could feel a vibration intermittently and then it goes away for awhile. It might be wrong but I like it and until someone proves otherwise I am sticking to it lol.
