torn up seat options: what did you do?

Hey everyone,

I'm getting close to being ready to drive the 4R and while most of my interior is in decent shape, the driver seat is toast.

A local guy has a decent back i can swap in but no good bottom so the question is should i:



1. Order the bottom replacement leather like so?

2. Order covers of some sort? some seem better than others


3. Find some other seats and retrofit them onto the frames


4. Get cheap-ass covers and deal with it until i find a proper good condition bottom


Probably prefer to stick with the tan leather or vinyl(i guess) and would love to keep it under 200 bucks if at all possible being that its one bottom damaged and I already hit my original budget with the motor rebuild. I could be swayed to spend more if on nice covers for both fronts.

What did/would you do?

Grab a passenger seat from the junkyard. Usually they are in way better condition than the drivers side. You'll have to swap the driver side base over

Yeah i've been keeping an eye out for one, so far i've only seen cloth

I got replacement leathers from lseat.com for another vehicle , and they are very nice for the price . I was thinking about getting them for my t4r , but have not yet seen anyone on here get them

That price isn't bad for both fronts and if i cannot find a good alternative i may just rewrap both for 300 bucks.

Anyone know the name of the tan color seats? I saw in a search "Oak Tan" is that right?

I went with Wet Okole. Only for the front seats. They were a bit more then 200 though. They are a very high quality product, super pleased with them. If you do go with a cover, get some high density foam to fill out where there are holes in the old foam. I had a good sized hole in my driver seat, but with the new supplemental foam + seat cover it is like a brand new seat.

I have the same issue with my interior. Even in SoCal it’s almost impossible to find any replacement driver seats (leather) that aren’t toast.

Having someone else redo the seat seems insanely expensive. Contemplating throwing a clothe one instead as a cheap temporary swap LOL ghetto rig

My seats aren't torn, and they are cloth, but the bolsters are worn from previous owners. I plan to get them reupholstered. I've had a great experience with reupholstered seats before, and while it is more expensive, it really does make the interior new again. I also like the stock seats a lot. Believe it or not, it's one of the most comfortable seats I've ever sat on in any ordinary car.

If you can spring for the cash, I'd say go find an upholstery shop that you trust.

the pain is finding the foams. lots of places to get covers. I think I mentioned it but the foams really soak up dank smells and my truck lost a mysterious odor once I got new foam.

if your worried about color?

generally the tan or brown interior is know as oak.

get a sample, in my build I did carpet and headliner. you really have to get the sample to know what it's going to look like. internet photo's suck at color matching. it takes forever and it cost a little extra but you will really not know unless you get samples.

now that it's fall again I'm loving my seat heaters again. was totally worth the trouble. when it's 30 deg outside and your butt is nice and toasty.

the suggestion to have somebody do it if money is not an issue is not a bad idea. it is not hard to do it but it does kind of suck. pretty much like the rest of life I guess.

There is a member on the 3rd Gen 4runner Mafia Facebook group that I've seen selling what appears to be very high quality vinyl replacements for the top and bottom of the seat. Pricing is very reasonable for what you get. I had planned to purchase from him but wound up finding a pair of front leather seats from an '01 limited at a local junk yard.

LOL i went to toyota because my company has a wholesale account just to price options.
The lower only foam was $198 and lower cover was $224 eeekk


ALSO:
Went by an upholstery shop nearishby and BSed with the owner for a while. Seems like just a single seat bottom is not really worth having him do but he can cut me a good little break if i do both seats and the leather matches something he already has on the shelf. Now i have no idea about how much of a break that is currently but he was talking about rebuilding the bad foam and whatnot so i'm thinking if we end up around 600 bucks i'd probably bite. Stings a good bit but man it would be amazing to have new seats.

Seat back donor obtained. Also got some extra door cards and will get the the other front seat soon.

Is this guy just for the seatbelt?

This is on the seat already in my 4R. The donor is all electric.

I went with these on mine. Decent for the price, better quality than what you can buy at AutoZone. They fit very well on the front seats but the rear seats have to be folded down both at once.

The pattern might be too cool for most people.

Wow. That seat has seen some shit, man!

Mine wasn't nearly that bad. I ended up replacing the lower leather only with one from an eBay vendor. I'd say it was a 90% match, but while I was in there I installed a heated seat. Makes that leather a bit more tolerable.

Those covers... that's bold!
