I thinkthat by the time I am "done" I'll pass over half the cost of my 5th gen

.... to spend once, cry once on mods....

AGREED!
Better to spend the money once on what you actually want than to try and stopgap yourself with something in the mean time. You'll always end up going back and wanting to do what you had originally planned in the first place.

These guys aren't kidding about doing it right, biding your time, and hitting the group buys. Often a group buy will save you 15-20% over retail, and all you have to do is wait for it to pop up in the forums. That said there are group buys which have lead me to spend money on mods I had previously not considered. Be careful what you click on in this forum, it can lead to some very cool things, none of them good for your pocketbook!

there is also a large disadvantage that we in the North suffer. nearly every modification or part that I have added to my truck has to be special ordered from the US. sure, there are local shops, sometimes they even have stock on the shelves, but no word of a lie, we often pay up to 60% premiums on off road parts when you buy local.
this sad truth means we have to order online, which lately means a 30% hit on currency exchange. then there are the insane shipping fees, plus arbitrary brokerage fees charged by UPS and FedEx.
as an example, my Addicted Offroad bumper that costs many of you $999USD plus $125 flat rate shipping, cost me nearly $1700CAD by the time it got to me here in Northern Alberta

I have a spread sheet documenting everything I've put into the truck up to this point. Let's just say it would've been a nice down payment on a house.:ybrick::doh:

Owned my first 4Runner for 5 days:

Installed already:
TRD Wheels with AT KO2 275-70-17

Leveling Kit

TRD Skid Plate cut to fit with the KDSS

Ordered:

Black out Lettering Overlay

RCI Rock Sliders

RIP to my $$$$

I've had mine for 3 months, and have spent right at $5000 in the last 2 weeks for wheels, tires, lift, lift install and lifetime alignment.

Spouse says I'm cut off for awhile. Unless I can explain more mods.. :) Oh. and Hopefully I can swap my 2 sets of chains from my Tacoma that were never used for one that fit the bigger tires. Les Schwab said they would make an exception, even though they are 7 years old. Prob cost extra though, so will add to the above number..

Not saying, but I can definitely tell you that if I had to do it from the beginning I would go a different route.

That and working on new computerized vehicles with fancy suspension systems makes everything twice as hard and twice as expensive.

probably a few grand on the basics: 5100s, KO2s, sliders, weathertechs, canvasback, CB radio, and other various knick-knacks.
Getting ready to drop another few grand on some "real" mods: lift/uca, bumper, & roof rack.

A Lot!

Of time, patience, profanity, frustration, beer, beer, beer, and finally being able to step back at the end and know it looks/functions a little better each time. And maybe a couple bucks here and there.

For myself the difficult part is more looking at what I have already spent and then the wish list of things I want and the cost associated with those items. It's a never ending project it seems

Hmmm......well.....

Addicted Offroad front bumper: ~$1600 (powder coat and stuff)
Winch: $600
ARB Compressor: $275
OME Lift: $975
LR UCA's: $400
and probably another ~$250 in small stuff around the truck.

Think I got off pretty easy compared to some of these other guys so far.

In Reality: I have probably spent just over $500 in mods in 1.5 years.

In My Head: I have spent several grand. I am ready to stop adulting...
