Toyota issues "fix" for axle wrap / driveshaft clunky-thumpy

Just in case anyone was wondering Toyota Canada has finally issued the same TSB so we can now get this repaired in Canada

^Topdeck, you dont really NEED to get this repaired, most Toyota trucks do this, my last 4runner had over 200K km and there was never an issue. I think its a convenience thing as its showing up for a lot of people at very low mileage and seems to need to be greased more often than it should.

I'm going to grease mine this weekend and see if the clunk goes away. I don't mind doing this each oil change if I can avoid the dealerships.

It's too early to know if/or when the clunk might or not come back for the new axle. Only miles will tell.

SO is this just limited to the SR'5 and the TE?? I have a LE and granted I only have just over 2000 miles on it, it hasn't shown up yet.

Yeah -- I've not noticed it on my '11 LE -- got about 9K on it. But after reading this thread I definitely had in on my '03 Sport. I always thought it was the brakes releasing built up pressure.

How much grease?

How much grease are you guys using on the slip yoke? For the universals 2 -3 pumps and the grease was beginning to ooze out of the joints but for the slip yoke zerk I pumped about 18 times but no oozing so I stopped. This is the first time I'm greasing (20k miles). I haven't driven it yet but I'll let you guys know if it fixed my thump.

I greased the front wheel slip yoke too but only gave it 6 pumps and no oozing there either.

It's not difficult, I was able to crawl under the truck without a lift and reach all the zerks you may need to roll the truck to position the rear shaft and the front can be turned by hand if you're in 2H.

No, no other issues came from it. I generally just took it as a sign that it needed greasing again.

Sounds like its quite common as my dealer told me that all the tacoma's do it too.

I brought my 2010 4Runner in for the driveshaft bump this morning. They replicated the issue and are replacing my driveshaft in a week under the powertrain warranty. I'm not a big fan of dealing with dealerships but at least it's not costing me more than my time.

I just had this happen to me today. I've got ~35k miles on my 2010 SR5, and I have never had it happen before on this truck or my 05 Tacoma I had previously. It only happened once today, and it was after a hard brake to avoid rear-ending someone that stopped short for a yellow light. I'm hoping I don't experience it again.

I had the clunking in my 2010 TE. I printed off this TSB and took my vehicle to the dealer. They ordered the part and replaced the rear driveshaft without test driving it. Seems fine now.

I was having this issue and told my local dealer at my 5k mile service. They were very resistant to fixing it until I printed a copy of the tsb from this thread and gave it to the service advisor. They ordered the part and replaced it a week later. It feels 99% better but I feel like its still having the "clunk" very lightly every once in a while. Could be my imagination though.

Even if it is, it's still good enough. It wasn't unbearable in the first place. Just like to keep my vehicles up to date on tsb's or recalls.

Just got my truck back from a 10,000 service today. I also gave them a copy of the TSB that was provided from this forum and they confirmed that I have the clunk/thunk noise. They said the part is in back order as of now and will call me next week when they get the part. I wanna thank the guys from this forum for giving the TSB for the clunk/thunk noise. Also does anyone have the TSB for the 1 2 transmission shudder?

I suspect the problem is that the dealers are supposed to grease them every 5000 miles but don't. Once the stiction issue starts, downhill it goes.

I had my 2011 TE in for the bumping issue, and it was real bad when I had the truck loaded down, I have befriended one of the top techs at the dealer and even lets me sneak in and oversee whats going on. He drove the truck and though it did not readily do it for him he replaced the shaft anyway and it is 100% now. :reddance:

Only delay was getting in the parts. Handed the Service Rep the TSB from earlier in this post and that was the end of any discussion. He was just glad not to have to look up the number himself.

When I asked if they had test drove it in both 2 and 4 wheel drive, it was as if I asked if Faster Than Light travel was possible. Huh, never thought of that.

But everything works out in the end.

Got mine ordered today- tech didn't even drive it. They did say that it is on national back order. I also had them order the replacement headlight covers under another tsb for the hazing. I love this site! Thanks to the OPs for pointing these out.:hatsoff:

Mine has 4700 on the clock , does that once in a while, not every time.
I scheduled first service appointment for Thursday. will show tsb and ask for replacement, we`ll see how that goes. will report back.

I'll crawl under mine this week and let you know. My dealer replaced mine without hesitation with 40k on the clock.

I am feeling this towards the front. It occurs when crawling forward without my foot on the gas pedal as well as low RPM range (sitting in traffic) as well as coming to a stop. I feel the vibration more often now. I need to get it checked out.
