Toytec Boss Front Suspension Noise

STOP THINKING ABOUT SPACERS. Tighten the factory body mount up and see if it helps. Yes it was never touched during your lift, but might have came loose during going off road. that was my problem.

Easy, this same type of noise has come up multiple times with Boss installation and every other time spacers were left out. It didn't look like he understood where you are telling him to check, maybe a picture for him?

Yes that would be helpful if someone could show me where to look. Although it does appear on the Toytec site that the Boss kit for KDSS comes without the spacers

I will tighten the body mounts... as soon as someone gives me an idea where they are lol

not trying to be disrespectful, but if you don't know where the bumpstops or body mounts are, what is keeping you from taking it to a shop?

It has already been to Hi Country 4x4 and they say nothing is wrong. It goes to the dealer next week. I am trying to trouble shoot as best I can and learn in the process. I will get under and find the body mounts when I get home tonight.

I am positive there are no sway bar spacers. However the link that was submitted was of an non KDSS system so looking for those spacers would be pointless wouldn't it?

Fair enough,

There won't be any sway bar spacers if you don't have KDSS. Here's the link for the boss kit installation: http://toyteclifts.com/images/stories/pdf_files/10upfj4r.pdf

However, whenever you are adding longer shocks, it is advised to use longer bumpstops to avoid having the shocks bottom out, which is a very bad thing for the shocks. In the past I have always used stepped urethane bumpstops for this purpose. The toytec kit comes with an extension that I showed earlier in this thread, which allows you to re-use the factory bumpstops. This extension would be on your lower control arm. If it were not installed, it is possible that your shocks had the chance to bottom out, which could harm your coilovers.

I'm surprised that I don't see more about aftermarket bumpstops on this forum, but I'm new to the 4runner and I haven't lifted mine yet. Possibly the geometry is such that there would need to be much more travel before the bumpstops come in to play, but I have always replaced mine with much larger energy suspension urethane bumpstops, as they are the last line of defence for your coilovers.

Just throwing it out there. I've seen aftermarket struts damaged by bottoming out with inadequate factory bumpstops after a suspension lift. Not saying it definitely happened to you, but it is a possibility.

Thanks for the link. That's very helpful. And it does clarify that there are no sway bar spacers used on a KDSS setup which is what I have.

The pictured spacers are for the rear suspension are they not?

I did re check and the radiator drop spacers were not installed so I am going to get that installed and see what happens.

Thanks

So I talked to Hi Country 4x4 and they had no idea about the radiator spacers so they are looking into it. Apparently they never read the instructions either. Hopefully this will resolve the noise issues.

Thanks for everyone's help and patience with guiding me

So here's a follow up question. The noise my truck is making now is very similar to the noise it was making when I was told my shocks were going and had to be replaced. I notice the radiator support spacers are used on both the Ultimate lift and the Boss lift. Is it possible that the noise I heard when I was told the shocks were going was really the noise from the lack of the radiator spacers?
And if that's the case I spent $800+ replacing my front coilovers for nothing?

Correct, that's why I went back and edited my post to mention it probably didn't apply to kdss, you just read to fast! Haha. What did toytec say? If they don't know what the issue is you are probably best to look for other sources of the problem.

Lol, sorry about that. Apparently the radiator support spacers were never installed but will be installed this coming Monday. Hopefully that will resolve the issue. But as I wrote in an earlier post I think I replaced my coilovers for no good reason due to Hi Country 4x4's failure to read the instructions on how to install the lift. Honestly they just don't know enough about Toyota's in my opinion. I will be looking for a different shop in the future. I have reached out to the Toyota dealer who referred me to them to see what they can do as well

High country did my lift as well as a number of others, that's what concerns me that it might not be lift related. Maybe they aren't as familiar with kdss but they know our trucks pretty well. You did confirm with Toytec you need the radiator spacers right? I know in that thread I linked to someone didn't get them in their box so that was an issue, they didn't realize they needed them. Something just doesn't add up...

Hi Country had never even heard of the spacers when I mentioned it. So my guess is if they did your lift you don't have them installed. I did verify with Toytec as did Hi Country but honestly they are pictured in the instructions so that was enough for me. When I had the Ultimate front coils it took about a year for the noise to develop. However when the Boss kit was installed it was immediately an issue. Hi Country doesn't work on a lot of 4Runners so that's my concern.

Maybe they've had turnover, I have the spacers and high country put them in. I've been under my truck and seen them in there!

Glad to hear you have them. Hopefully them missing mine is a one off thing. However, now I have lost faith in them and think I replaced my coilovers for no reason :wtf:

I guess my question at this point, is there any contact with the radiator support bracket to know if this could be the sound? I would think you'd see paint rubbed off or something otherwise it would have to be something else.

The only contact I can see is on the top outside of the radiator support bracket. In the photo I have attached the skid plate is still on. (forgive me I didn't have time to remove it.) The bright orange scared part is duplicated on the outside of both radiator support arms. It's about 2-3 inches long. That is all I can find until I have a chance to remove the skid plate. My sway bar is a bit different shaped than the one noted in the thread mentioned here. (I believe because its KDSS.) Regardless the spacers are being installed next Monday. When they have it all apart I will get a close look at it. Sorry the picture quality is poor

That is interesting. I have a squeak noise that I hear in the front. I wonder if this is what is causing it. It is headed into the shop on Friday to be looked over. I only hear a metal squad noise at low speeds. One that I can replicate by simply rocking the car when it is parked.
