TPMS and swapping tires

[MENTION=99235]Scott@Hightech[/MENTION] hit the nail on the head... Winter is 6 months of the year up here. Right now people are going crazy because their studded tires aren't on their cars... Roads are covered in snow and ice and by Christmas there will me a snow bank on my lawn big enough that I won't see my neighbours until April. Spring, Summer and Fall are 1 season and it's called Not Winter. lol
[MENTION=87461]badhabits[/MENTION] I totally get your point...when TPMS hit the market I hated it with a passion. I was the guy who checked my tire pressure, tread depth, etc daily. Years later I realized the benefit of this system and now don't want to live without it... It's a want, not a need! Take for example my new Mickey Thompsons I put on in the spring... Installed my lift recently and noticed that my tires were wearing a little funky. The only thing I can relate it to is my alignment because I know my pressure has been good all summer.

p.s. Anyone want to buy a set of slightly worn Mickey Thompsons?
 
Now for the question. Does anyone have a recommendation for brand of TPMS replacements that do not involve a dealer. I have been looking around and Amazon has about 15 different systems for cloning the sensors, all at a reasonable price. After all this discussion are there any suggestions on what to do?

That would depend on the sensors that you buy, I havent done any research any research on the consumer side of TPMS tools. My tools have to be able to service every make and model and most aftermarket systems. Which is why i have the Bartec tool i mentioned before
 
The ATEQ TPM Quickset tool seems like the cheapest way to go. Are the TPMS ID's readable on the sensor itself, ie: if I dismount my winter tires I just put on, I can find the number on there and punch in the IDs on the tool and voila, TPMS lit off?!
The Quickset can not read individual sensors. It's function is to connect to the ECU via the OBDII port and read the identification numbers stored there. The Quickset can then be connected to a PC via USB and the identification numbers entered manually for the second set of sensors. So you need to know what the numbers are for that second set. If you need to read the numbers on mounted rims, you would need something like the ATEQ VT30 that can wake up the sensor and read it's information.

I see, thanks for the info. So basically I'd need the VT30 + Quickset combo to do this myself? How else can I find out what the TPMS ID numbers are without this VT30 tool?
 
This seems to be the least expensive method to have your own equipment. You could get a tire shop to read out the mounted sensors and give you those id numbers, which you can then enter into the Quickset tool.

I wanted to bypass the TPMS all together, but Discount Tire wouldn't mount my snows to my second set of wheels for me without putting the TPMS on there since they new I had TPMS. They did give me a pretty solid deal $30 per sensor... but I still really didn't want to do it.

I didn't have DT mount them to my T4R at the time since it was still warm out, but I just mounted my snows tonight myself. Planning to go back to DT to get them to scan and give me the new TPMS IDs and hopefully buy a Quickset.

Still a bit annoyed to spend about $230 more than I hoped because of the TPMS!:mad2:

Great deal. I got mine a couple years ago from Amazon at $149. Works on (I think) up to 4 VINs - so you can use it for quite some time potentially.

Agree. I just ordered the quick set programming tool from tire rack along with winter wheels and tires. Tirerack will include the new sensor ids with the order so I can program them, but I'm going to pickup another tool for reading and activating sensors, just so i have all bases covered - Autel TS401 MaxiTPMS

This is a great thread. Thanks to all that contributed - oldie but a goodie.
