TPMS replaced at 5000miles or am I getting hosed...???

(((I know this might be a stupid post with an easy answer in my manual:rtfm: but I do not have it with me and couldn't find a answer in a quick search.)))

So my 4runner has 5,000 miles on it and I am switching out the tires size (265 to 285) and Discount Tire is trying to tack on a fee to rebuild all the sensors...sorry I do not have the quote in front of me either but I know it bumped up the price enough. The guy said it has to be done every time you switch out the tires...he also said 285 wouldn't fit... I stopped him right there and told him I could show him 100 4runners on this board that run them and a little rub is A-OKAY with me.

change out sensors at 5k? or is it just them upping the price? thanks for any help you can give me.:cheers:

A tpms rebuild is fine. It's a few cheap parts, under $20 easy I would say. Just some new connectors for reinstalling. Mechanical bits is all. No biggie.

My understanding is that the TPMS sensors will need a rebuild kit when the sensors are moved to other wheels. The rebuild kit consists of includes "crush washers" that cannot be reused (or should not be reused). Some tire shops have a policy that the sensors will be rebuilt each time tires are mounted. Similar to the policy for non TPMS wheels, the valves are changed each time tires are mounted.

New sensors no, rebuild kits yes. Just my experience.

NOOOOOOOo!!!!!! NEVER GO THERE AGAIN. That place is clearly trying to rip you off! Upgrading ur tire width or hight in no way ever calls for a "sensor rebuild" The only time i change my customers sensors at Toyota is if one is broken or if they are changing rims. Never change them for new tires!

Thanks for all the quick answers... I figured as much... I hate dealing with this part where I already asked the guy do you really HAVE TO rebuild them with less than 5K? and he said absolutely... now I have to go back in tomorrow AM when I have the tires installed and explain to him that I do not want it done that even if its $10 a tire(not sure to be honest do have the bill with me) and if not I'll go down the street... same approach I unfortunately have used many times when buying a car...

I would inquire with them as to whether or not they plan to drop the TPMS before swapping tires. If they do, then yes the rebuild would be required; but at this point you would promptly leave and find another more competent shop who is capable of swapping tires w/o dropping the TPMS.

Some places are not skilled enough (or don't have the proper equipment) to swap a tire w/o breaking the TPMS, hence why they might insist on removing them first before the procedure, just as a precaution.

That's a great point to ask!

I know the economy is hurting and companies are trying to make up additional revenue wherever possible...but they have already got me for the cost of the tires, the fee for install and the roadside replacement warrenty...

Ok so this post makes me wonder how many people out there are getting ripped off by placed like these. If i do a set of tires tomorrow at work with sensors i will post a vid to show the process. The idea of charging for a sensor rebuild is just silly. Some people take them off and some dont when changing tires. This story makes me laugh. I'll try to show you how the pros do it sometime tomorrow.

ahh never mind what i said. after reading this reply i think i misunderstood whats going on here. they are just charging u to unscrew the sensors not rebuild. that takes like 15 seconds to do per sonsor... Still, i've never charged for that but i guess smaller shops do.

And the hits keep coming... So they won't replace the tires cause I have the Spidertrax 1in spacers on my car. "We have to remove them, it's a safety issue,
But we can sell you different rims to give you the same stance" are you serious the Toyota dealership didn't have a problem with them when they rotated my tires. Now you want to try to sell me rims too? Are you ******* serious!?

But they were nice enough to take off the $15 per tire sensors rebuild kit. So that saved me $60. After I asked if they planned on dropping the sensors or what purpose rebuilding the sensors severed when I am keeping the same rims!?

So looks like I'll be spending the afternoon jacking up the car and cleaning each lug nut post of the old loctight cause i doubt they did a good job of it and of course putting the spacers back.

Discount tires on Eastern... Managers name is joe...its like a used car lot around here with the hidden fees and up-selling. At least there is one guy here more angry than me... Looks like they bent the rim on his special limited edition corvette and he said its been over a month and they still don't have the rim in yet to replace it.

The discount tire shop here outside of Austin hasn't charged me a penny to mess with my TPMS, so it might just be regional. They also would rotate and balance my Mt/R tires that I have on my Jeep Wrangler without ever mentioning that I had Spidertrax on them.
However, the last time I went in they said they had to replace my 1 year old BFG t/a's with 4 different tires because they weren't able to effectively balance them anymore...Of course for a fee... And they wouldn't even attempt to put a 285 on my spare rim and mount it under the back. Said it wouldn't fit without even trying..
I might find a different shop from now on.
