There are plenty of posts on this board from people who have had some pretty nasty experiences, many of them not their fault - turning off ATRAC and/or VSC reduces your chances of escaping such an incident unharmed.
Toyota designed the 4Runner as an integrated system - adjusting for the top heavy design by introducing systems like VSC and ATRAC to reduce the risk of a rollover in particular. Studies have now shown how big a contribution VSC makes to reducing rollover rates and we are all painfully aware of the high mortality rates in such accidents. For everybody else's sake if not your own, please don't turn these systems off - just accept that the s2000 is the car for fast cornering etc and enjoy the 4Runner for what it is.

and RickyCRX I know you are going to do this!!
Let us know how it turns out..

RickyCRX said:For DECADES there was no such thing as traction control. Your mom and dad and their mom and dad grew up their entire driving life without any sort of electronic 'crutches.' Why do we all of a sudden need them now?!?!?! Are you saying that you are much less coordinated and less fit to handle a vehicle than your ancestors??
As I said before, THE TIRES DON'T HAVE ENOUGH GRIP to flip a 4Runner without hitting an immovable object (like a curb, or going down an embankment, etc)!!

Koz said:Ricky,
I understand what you would like to do with the 4Runner. I too would love to have COMPLETE control, when I want to.
You made the statements above that I felt needed to be clarified. There is no way ANY person can do what the stability control can do (apply braking to one wheel). Also, if a SUV/Mini-Van type vehicle (vehicles with a high center of gravity) experience a rear blow-out and the vehicle gets sliding sidways, it can flip.

RickyCRX said:PLEASE stop the preaching.
(those who ride motorcycles will understand the concept of only 100% of traction being available and it can only be used for one of three things; acceleration, braking, or turning. It can be used for a combination of those three things, but when you use more of one, the other two must suffer.)
Now, all of you that just want to preach, PLEASE... I'll ask one more time; TAKE IT ELSEWHERE. I just wanted technical discussion on how to disable all traction control/stability control/etc systems on a 4th gen 4Runner. I think the "Andymod" is the closest solution that anybody can come up with. I'll certainly be trying this out at some point in the near future.

Q-V said:I've had 2 near brushes with disaster in my 4Runner simply from changing lanes in slippery winter conditions. In both incidents, the VSC cut my throttle and almost *caused* an accident. Personally, I think I'd be better off without this "safety" system.
RickyCRX said:What part of "I don't need anybody saying, "But those systems are designed to protect you, blah, blah..."" did you not understand??
Koz said:The VSC stepped in and stopped your vehicle from spinning around. It SAVED you!

If you wanted to drive it like that you really should have considered a Cayene or something.
Man I hate it when people come to ask for advice on a forum like this and turn into a big smart ass.
If you're so smart why the hell can't you figure out how to:
a) Correctly identify the system that's giving you greif.
b) Disable the system
c) Sell your 4runner and buy a vehicle that meets your needs?
:bash:
Iowa4Runner said:I might believe that if I hadn't personally witnessed how VSC can be totally out to lunch and have no freaking clue what my car is doing. I can hang the ass end of my 4Runner 3 FEET out to the side before VSC wakes up and starts beeping at me. Then there was that time I got my left wheels into some slush that was slowly pulling me into to the median. Steering to the right had no effect. If VSC had applied a little braking to the right side wheels, that would have been very helpful. Instead, all I got was beeping. Thanks Toyota...
