Trail Edition Shocks

Here is a picture of the under sized stock bilstiens

Those shocks do last a long time, but thats because they are used on stock vehicles. Load a FJ, 4runner, or tacoma up with armor and wheel it often and see how long the stock bilies last. They would be faded in no time, and the stock coils would be shot too. There's a reason people upgrade their suspension, and there's a reason OME does so well in australia.

I think that the OP only wanted new shocks...not necessarily a lift nor more armor. If that is true, then there is really no reason to get OME shocks...he should just stick with OEM and get slightly bigger tires. Personally, that is what i would do...but, i am also of the viewpoint that lifting a 4runner is not a good idea...so, i am bias that way. For a no lift vehicle, i don't think that OME shocks provide any additional benefit over stock shocks.

Now for lifts, then yeah, get OME stuff, but i would still favor the monotube shocks over the OME shocks for reasons above.

congrats on the new TE, Falls. i too used to have an '06 SE V8 like your previous ride. will be interesting to hear your impressions of the new rig. i just hit 8k miles and honestly it feels better, and stronger, to me now than when new.

The TE has no different shock than the SR5 and Limited does. I personally checked before I purchased mine. Thats what the dealership told me as they looked up part no's . They were all the same #.

Also the Bilsteins that come on the TT FJ and the Tundra o/r package are Bilstein branded shocks . Which means they are made to toyota's spec's not Bilsteins specs. The get put out for a bid with ride quality being the #1 factor . Aftermarket Bilsteins would be better than buying the OEM one from a Toyota dealer .

I would stay with stock shocks if they worked well for you.

And why is lifting a 4runner not a good idea?

Well, i am kinda strange that way...here is an old thread: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/35135-lift-kits-big-tires-durability.html

It all comes down to is...why did you buy a 4runner instead of a Jeep?? Reliability and durability, right?

All of my vehicles in the past have been pretty much stock except for maybe +1 tire size and rock sliders. With proper driving technique (aka great spotter), i was able to hang with other folks with big lifts through most (if not all) obstacles, including rock crawling. Now, if you're into big cliffs or boulder sized rocks, then yeah, lifting is good...but, there is usually a way around such big stuff (and i do not mean a bypass route). And if you're into big cliffs and boulder rocks, then a 4runner ain't the best vehicle for such type of off-roading in the first place.

Do you even own a 4runner? I dont think you prius could follow anyone on a trail. And if you are doing stuff in a stock truck with just tires and sliders you are in a different ball park than I hope a good number of us with lifts. I didnt buy a jeep because I didn't want to buy a piece of **** car. And yes, I have seen those crazy videos of what your G class can do, lets be honest, I think a micromachine could easily handle that. This is an open invitation to head over to pirate and voice that same opinion, we would be happy to have a nice discussion about it over there.

As for me, Im gonna take my silly lifted truck and go hit some---

Uh-oh, i ruffled some panties. :moon:

Hey, it is just an opinion. Nah, i would not take my Prius off-roading, how silly of you! The off-roading in my G-wagen could be done with micromachines? Who would have thought?! But, with your vast off-road knowledge, i assume that you know better...oh well. Those darn Jeep Rubicon owners just don't off-road extreme like the 4runner folks, right?! :D Pirate forum? That classy forum? Funny...but it does explain your pissy response. :bash:

Again, this is just an opinion by me. No need to flame me for it.

Edit: and that is a nice cliff for you to jump off on.... :)

And your vast off-road knowledge you have of reading forums. Really man, when your opinion is quoting everyone elses posts, it hardly makes you credible on the subject. Furthermore, jeep rubicon owners? really? some factory package that makes every middle aged balding male think he is some extreme outdoorsman (much like yourself). That car is built for people just like you. Like people say, if you can't build... buy. Luckily for you T4R is one of the softest forums out there as far as wheeling goes (besides maybe your minivan forums) so your troll of a post will most likely go unnoticed...

hahaha...made me laugh today. Thanks. I love the part about the Rubicon...and the cheap shot at my minivan...i have actually been waiting for you to take a cheap shot at that! :lmao:

I guess it is a good thing we don't all have big lifts and huge tires then huh considering the 5th gens come with a "32" and most of us have just went up one size with a mild lift. Unlike the guys in big diesels with 37's who can even make it down a fire road.

This has went way off topic and it seems you thai are just trying to start a flame war with people on here you have a strong opinion and spend alot of time trolling this forum and others it seems go outside and drive your 4runner oh wait you don't have one?

you must be one of those guys going over boulder rocks and big cliffs...:nerd:

Yup, I am definitely trolling.... :D

You ask me why...and I gave u my opinion...now, you're moaning about it? It is an opinion...some of u have trouble understanding that word.

So, u guys are saying that lifts and big tires have no effect on durability and/or reliability?

NO ONE SAID THAT.... you said we shouldn't lift them, and then you said we should buy jeeps... no one here wants to hear that.... find a new forum to bother

Yeah a huge 6in lift would definitely affect durability but seeing they don't make one for us and considering people have been lifting 4runners for years and haven't seen many lift induced problems I would say no it doesn't affect durability. And you did mention the jeep thing I personally don't mind jeeps just their stupid arrogant condescending owners (most of them anyway)

And as for your opinion on shocks for a 5th gen Trail Thai have you even driven one offroad or driven one at all to begin with to even comment on how the shocks are on it or perform or is it something you read somewhere else? Just curious. That's my opinion.

Man, you guys are ulta-sensitive!! When did I recommend Jeeps in this thread?

When did I tell people not to lift? I gave my opinion on lifting an independent suspension. What makes u think I care about what u guys do with your 4runners? I am not that compassionate!

Jeep owners acting like pricks? You mean, kinda like how you guys are acting?? Geez.

Want another crack at my minivan??!! :D

Why hasn't this thread been locked? It's gone from an open request for thoughts and opinions to a 2-on-1 attack on a co-founding member of this forum. :wtf:

OP- OME are great shocks but they are best paired up with the rest of the OME lift. If you're keeping the stock coils all around bilstein 5100's are a good step up from factory shocks. They're also adjustable so you can give the front a slight lift to level it out if you like. Get them for the front and rear and you should be good.
