TRD Exhaust - Available in 2020 M.Y.

Just ordered a Gibson cat-back system through Jason B at BI. I extensively went through all my options for replacing the system on my 4th gen, and as much as I know this is 5th gen territory, I'm not sure why people would spend another 2-300 on the TRD version when it doesn't look or seem as nice. The black tip looks a bit out of place when viewing from the back- on the Gibson the whole last part of the pipe, plus the tip is black. I get it, everyone has their own taste, but it just seems like the logical choice!
:llama:

Looks are in the eye of beholder. With the sale they had I paid little more than 100, not 300.
Personally I think the dual tip looks lame. Secondly do research on Gibson across the forums. Many are finding the Gibsons rusting out in under 2 years..hmm, stainless rusts? Others say it sounds like shit and many simply buy another system and move on. Enjoy your Gibson:llama:

Do you know which Gibson system receives these complaints of rust? There is an aluminum coated one and a full stainless version. Stainless absolutely rusts, the period of time before oxidation occurs depends on the grade of stainless being used, the Nickel content, etc.

Nope and not gonna look. Did my research a few months back and read through the dozens of threads. Much bad press on Gibson so I avoided like my ex wife.

You are 100% correct on that. The SS one is a Lifetime Warranty and guaranteed even if you sell your vehicle to someone else, it carries over. The aluminized option, which is less expensive is 1 year warranty. Most go with the SS due the the Lifetime warranty. Below is the thread with more info, pics, etc.

Gibson catback exhaust for 5th gen! Labor day special, sale extended for September! Video attached

I'm also working on better pricing with my Toyota rep on the TRD but these systems are still going to be much more. IF anyone is looking for one, call or text 717-319-2100 and I'll do my best.

apohl17 That's why I liked the Gibson. Their original version didn't have the exhaust tubing black and it was silver tubing but Jason B got involved and got them to revise it because it didn't look factory. Now the whole end section of the exhaust piping is black going into the black tips. I went with it for that and it sits up much higher under the bumper which is better for me with offroading. I don't want to ding any tips! I have in on my 4th and 5th gen lol.

interested but need to see it and hear it and for the price to come down
someone please up loaded a good sound clip thanks

The Gibson exhaust sounds like a V8 at idle. But as soon as you accelerate it sounds like ass just like any loud exhaust on the 1GR-FE.

Buy me a go pro and I'll post one up.. only thing I have is home security and the sound is washed out.

So I just got back from an hour cruise. We all know the runner is not a race car.
Driving (my) normal conservative throttle, this TRD exhaust gives a good mellow sound, without drone, without the obnoxious raspy sounds that others have.
When I punch it, not over bearing or obnoxious. I have the sprint booster set at red 5 and have not tried it at the stock setting yet so not sure if that makes a difference.

Are there different models for Borla? Guy at work has it and he said and I agree after hearing it. It's awful with a raspy drone

Two models of Borla's. S-Type and Touring. I am running the Touring. I pulled off a URD 3" Cat-Back to go to this combination. Loud and drone. In comparison, quiet, no rasp or drone.

Just saying, you want rasp and loud, I'll take for a ride in my Roush Mustang with exhaust set for Track mode with shifts at 7500 RPM. Wickedly fast and obnoxiously loud but so much fun.

Just something to consider if you planning on adding a Y pipe, aka mid pipe. The stock exhaust sounded the best with it. Anything after even with claimed quieter exhaust will never sound the same as all these sound clips. It will all drone. Stock muffler at idle I can hear the flow from the Y, I MISS my mild growl and intake vacuum sound. I may try to find a newish stock muffler and don't look back, my t4r had enough pull for freeway entrances. Maybe I'm just getting old, turning 40 next week.

I'm considering the URD Y Pipe with the TRD exhaust, but I'm wondering how bad the drone will be, and I wonder if it's worth the trouble with emissions, since you lose a set of cats...

Here's a $100 option. Ignore the rattle, the tail pipe was barely touching the heat shield by the spare tire. I never heard it inside or while driving so I have no idea it was doing it until I made this video. I have since bent it slightly to provide the needed clearance. I don't totally love the sound but there is a very noticeable performance gain. Passing power is improved, the engine pulls through the RPM range faster and smoother, I haven't noticed any difference in MPG as of yet though. Only other engine mod is the TRD intake with an AFE Pro Dry filter.

I installed my TRD exhaust Friday...

I legitimately have waited years for TRD to come out with an exhaust for the 5th gen- have a 16 Pro the wife now drives and a 19 Pro. I’ve had several vehicles in the past and all but two have had exhaust systems, so I know the good and the bad. I wanted a “factory” system because I knew that Toyota would design and sell a product that has been tested, engineered, fitted, and assembled to work and work right. I’ve had to tweak many a system in the past, replace it because it sounded like crap, or regret it for being too quiet. Where I’m at now, I don’t have time to worry about spending a Saturday am at a muffler shop, figure out how to return a giant box filled with metal tubes, or have a non-operable vehicle in the garage because it didn’t fit right and I gave up at 2am for the install...

I was right to wait. The system came well packaged and was not scratched or dented. No instructions, but not needed. All hardware you need is in there with the exception of the front donut gasket which I re used without issue.

It fit perfectly and required no tweaking at all. Just hung it up, bolted it down. Use WD40 or silicone to slide the hangers on and off. Little pro tip. I did not even need to jack the truck up. Used a low pro creeper from harbor freight, dropped the spare to fit in the rearmost pipe, and I was good to go.

The worst part of the entire process was removing the old system. Mind you, I installed mine on and essentially brand new pro with 5000 miles on it. So it was not an issue of the bolts being rusted or seized. The problem for me was reaching the rear pipe bolts which are literally impossible to get to. I have a full garage filled with tools and couldn’t figure it out for the life of me. Since the nuts are welded on they need to be accessed from the top. If I had a lift I imagine I could have disconnected the front and then drop the system down to get access, but I’ve resorted to my sawsall which I should have done in the first hour rather than waste time trying to figure out how to get it off unscathed (only to go into the basement graveyard of 4Runner parts). Nothing scarier than cutting apart a virtually brand new exhaust system on a truck not knowing if the new system will fit. Lucky for me it fit perfectly.

The sound is very quiet at idle. Slight hint of a low rumble, you know it’s there, but don’t expect it to sound like a Chevelle. On acceleration the sound is very pleasant and even with the windows closed you can hear the deep rumble as a climbs RPMs. It’s loudest under moderate acceleration at 2,500 to 3,000. Sounds great when you nail it. For me, it was the perfect combination of sound and growl I was looking for. This is my daily driver And I spend more of my time driving to office parks than on slick rock in Moab. And a newborn is also riding in the back. I knew a Flowmaster 40 series was out of the question and this fits the bill perfectly, at least for me.

If you want straight pipes to wake up the neighbors, this isn’t for you. If you want a nice aggressive sound to match the truck, (maybe) free up some back pressure, and you own at least one Polo shirt, you’ll love it.

Good description as it hard to describe! I think this is going to be a good sell for trd and I'll bet that other manufacturers are buying one to dissect it and figure out how the heck they made a runner sound great!
