Clunk resolved (philly)
Does anyone know if they are still using the old, 150 version of the shock on new 2017 TRD PROs? I get mine in a month and am wondering if I should request the new 160 shock before I pick it up.
Hey everyone. This is a problem I complained about since I first got the TRD PRO back in 2015.
Some people have the issue with the BILSTEINS clunking. Some don't. I complained about it to service for the first two times i took it in for regularly scheduled servicing. Not a single tech could "reproduce the clunk" so they weren't really willing to do anything about it.
I KNEW something was amiss and sure enough a TSB BULLETIN was issued. As soon as I let service know about the TSB, I showed the service manager the TSB BULLETIN, and while i was there I took him for a quick spin in the truck. Luckily it was cold out. Sure enough it clunked, and that was good enough for him.
They ordered the replacements for me and slapped them on and guess what...the clunk is GONE.
I'm running the 2 inch TOYTEC lift all around and i also have 33inch NITTO TRAIL GRAPPLERS. I've been hitting terrain and bumps that used to make the front suspension clunk, and now its completely gone.
If you have the clunk, the lift won't fix it. Anyone who says the lift fixed the clunk, I dont buy it. Its probably psychosomatic/wishful thinking. It is without question a design defect.
The BILSTEINS that were re-designed have the following part number
"PTR13 - 89160 - RF (or LF)"
the RF is for RIGHT FRONT and then the other should be LF for "LEFT FRONT".
I know some people who had the clunk and then straight up swapped their entire suspension for upgraded ICONS. Sure, thats awesome. But for me, the BILSTEINS are just fine for now. I've gone through some pretty intense terrain with them and for my purposes, I'm fine with them. I've been putting my money into other mods on the truck. If in the future I decide to upgrade the entire suspension system, then I may.
The BILSTEINS get shit on a lot in the off-road community, but whatever. It is what it is. They aren't ICONS....They certainly aren't KINGS...but if it aint broke, don't fix it.....They're fine for me as I'm sure they are fine for the lot of you out there.
To save this from being ENTIRELY long winded, that's my manifesto regarding the CLUNK. if you have the clunk, just google "TRD PRO 4RUNNER TSB" and you should be able to pull up the bulletin. Show it to your Service Manager at toyota. If they push back, give them hell and/or call corporate.
I'm an attorney, and I refuse to bear the burden of a design defect imposed on us by a third party who Toyota volitionally decided to partner with in the build of this model. It's TOYOTA's liability. They need to make this right for everyone.
