Tundra related....HOLY HELL

Does anyone remember the "Truth about trucks" web site that Ford put on? It was a comparo on many different aspects of trucks and it showed in a mocku-drama sort of way how ford was better. I tell you it was a brilliant piece of advertising. One point was to flex your doors forward and watch for bending on the frame where the door hinges are...the ford had virtually none, while the others didn't look so good. I tested this a few times and sure enough they make a good point. That www site almost sold me on a f-150. I do think the newest 150 is a great vehicle, I owned a bullet proof Ranger for 8 years (cept for the IFS...what garbage), which I think is another good tough platform overall.

For anyone that mentioned the Ridgeline...please load one up to whatever they claim is capacity and view it either from the rear or actually on the road. I saw one with a small load of asphalt (admiteddly dense material) in the bed and the IRS was flexed so bad I thought it was going to just break apart. I also thought the rear was going to touch the ground. I felt like offering the poor guy to load it into my truck (the Ranger) and save that poor ridgeline. However, I have driven the Ridgeline and admit it drives exceptionally well, and is very comfortable. Whatever the rating, it has NO useable ground clearance. For most people, who use a "truck" to get to the dump once a year, and generally load "air" into the bed each day to go to work, Ridgelines and weak frames are just dandy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that!

I never heard of people having any major issues different than any other mfg.

Like I said , name something that does not have its short comings / issues / problems ect.... there is not a mfg. like that.

The links tell nothing except a handful of people who have problems . You can find threads like that for every vehicle and its weak points.

There are really no points being made here. We know there are issues I dont think anyone is arguing that.

All vehicles have issues, but some have bad ones and some have minor ones. I tend to stay away from vehicles with bad issues.

As for the links, i guess that we are reading it differently. If you do not see it as a problem in the Tacoma (with rear locker), then that's good...hopefully, your future Tacoma won't suffer from such issue. Personally, i would NOT get the TRD package...i would save up the money and get ARB rear locker. The ARB locker also strengthen the axle diff, which is even better!:)

Damn , you get so defensive.....lol. Its not like all the Tacoma's have this problem. Most are off -roaders , most have mods , it is what it is , I see plenty of them around and I'm sure not all of them are problem trucks. If you tend to stay away from a vehicle that has had or does have random bad such issues , get yourself a good bicycle , because there is not such mfg. or vehicle. I could buy a Nissan and have a totally different set of issue's , possibly some major. Personally if I was to buy a Tacoma I would not want the locker simply because I feel the limited slip is more useful in 90% of situations on and off road. I would buy the TRD Sport which has the limited slip. If I decided to turn it into a hard core off roader then I would prob. put lockers in both and strengthen the hell out of them. I've read a lot of good and bad on the Taco site , most all of them are pretty happy with their trucks and find them reliable and able to take plenty of abuse for their needs . Thats all that matters .

As the orig. thread started out about the Tundra and not having a fully boxed frame. I personally would like one , and on the Taco too. I think it needed in a truck personally , but I'm no engineer and leave that to the experts.

On another note I went with the wife because she wanted to look and drive a new CRV AWD , we took it out for a test drive , rode like crap and did have some rattles. I got to take an up close look and crawl underneath a Ridgeline , all I have to say is the one we looked at was a pretty dark red , but that is not a truck !!!!! In my book , no frame = no truck ....lol , no solid rear axle = no truck !!

Back to the Taco , I bet if you were able to find out how many STOCK TRD's with locking rear diff.
have had issues with the frame or rear end we would probably find a very small percentage compared to how many are out there being used and abused. There are people who actually do NOT know how to use that feature without causing a problem to the rear end , just like there are those out there who do not know how to drive off road . How much of the small percentage equates to that ??? nobody will ever know. Remember when you read those horror stories about something breaking there are 3 sides top it. The one that they post about , the one the dealer thinks happened , and the truth about what really happened.

Ok your turn , let me hear it .....lol

When did i get defensive?? Which part of my post are you referring to?? Did i miss something?? I just gave you FACTS...it's up to you to decide on it. It sure seems like someone is very close to buying a Tacoma...all of sudden, this rush to defend the Tacoma!:D

Uhhh...limited slip for off-road?? Well, again, that's your call. I prefer ATRAC personally over garden variety LSD for a few reasons...but you probably don't want to hear about it.:)

Why are we talking about the Ridgeline? Was i defending it?? Or are you talking to someone else? CRV??!!

Well, from the looks of things, this rear locker axle "issue" is well-known by most Taco owners who take their rig off-road. In fact, many FJ owners have experienced this "issue" as well and are well aware of it. Why? FJ & Tacoma share the same axle & locker and the same powertrain. But, i guess that you don't want to hear about that either...you can search on FJCRUISERFORUMS.COM...plenty to read from real off-road experts, not wannabees like myself!:D It's not a "small" or "minor" issue as you alluded to.

Falls, you may not want to read my posts anymore...you might not think of me as a friend afterwards. Things sure change quickly on the net!:( I present things in a fair light with no brand loyalty. Some dig it, others don't.:p

Back to Tundra...sorry for going off-topic.

If you see I was laughing at you being defensive , so read the post carefully.

I also said the limited slip basically fine for 90% of the people on & off road , not many 4x4's even see off road use , some never even use lo range , so limited slip will be fine for some. After having Atrac in front and read of the 4R I personally think its awesome. I don't even know if the Taco comes that way.

The Ridgeline comment was made by someone else in a prev. post , not by you. Sorry to throw that in the middle.....lol

I know people have had locker issues , but not all. This being excluded there are a lot of poeple who frankly do not know how to use it properly or off road properly and a few of those might be the issue with some of these truck. When something goes for what ever reason they need to blame someone or something , that why I take what people say with a grain of salt and as I stated there are always 3 sides to every story and people need to justify what happen , just like how you say people need to justify their purchase on Tirerack and don't believe those reviews or experiences.

I'm not saying its a small issue or didn't mean to come off that way I don't think its a massive issue either. I would be interesting to see how many Taco's were sold with the rear locker and how many have had the issue , same with the FJ. That what would make it a small issue by % factors and would state facts in "real world" defects more clearly. Would I still by an FJ or Tacoma , yes I would , do I have ANY plans on it , NO !! I would be more to opt for the FJ since I like SUV's ( but the kind you can go off road with ) If I have a need for a small pick up I probably would look into a Tacoma. At this point I have NO plans on either.

With that being said like I stated "as of this moment " if I was going to buy a full size truck it would be a Chevy or a Ford.

As far as friendship , I'm not that shallow , its ok to agree to disagree in my book , no harm no foul. Its talking 4x4's and thats what I like and am passionate about. I really have no brand loyalty and have owned a lot of different 4x4's and have off roaded with all of them and had fun , knock wood and have never broke anything major , even with the old S-10 Blazer .......lol. Like I stated though and I'm sure you see plenty of things since you get more trail time than I do , some people don't even know how to drive off road (actually dont even have a clue ) much less using stuff like Atrac , locker , LS to their advantage . I know with all the 4x4's out now and just about everyone having one here in Wi. you should see how people drive when we have a snow storm , you would laugh your ass off and they are in ditches everywhere. I've pulled a few out and their comment is well I bought this 4x4 so this would not happen. They are idiots !!!

There is a time and a place to go hog wild and let her rip and go nuts playing in the snow , it is a blast !!! The road is not one of those places.

With all that being said in this debate we shall move back to the Tundra thread , and I apologize to the orig. poster for getting so far off topic.

Just a quickie about the Tundra , there was a dealer here that had one on Saturday on a rotisserie with a huge sale I wanted to go see it but could not. More interested in the rotisserie and how the truck was mounted than anything else , but it was a big Tundra push , radio & TV coverage.

No worries Thia ~~~ :D

PS , I do love my 4R on its off road ability , its solid as a rock and intent to push it to more limits.

Falls, the problem with "real world" stats on an off-roader (like FJ or Taco) is that there are many more billions mall-crawlers than there are rockcrawlers. Thus, the "breakability" of a vehicle's parts while off-roading cannot be measured accurately by taking # of vehicle affected divided by all sales of the vehicle. More accurately, you should poll the owners who DO take their rig off-road and how many of them are affected. (If you read the threads, then you will see that many of them are NOT neophytes to the off-roading world.)

(BTW, i added a link to the Taco's rear issue on page 7.)

That's about all i know about statistics....:biggrin2:

As for snow driving, you should see how many TEXANS end up in the ditch a few years ago when we got 1-2 inches of snow!:D It was hilarious (and sad) to drive the highway after the "snowstorm"!

Used to be not long ago..

No leaf springs, no truck!

No manual hubs, no truck!

No solid front axle, no truck!

Kind of funny how perceptions change over time.

No dig, just an observation! :)

As far as bad rears; it turns out there were bad gears in the 05 models that has since been corrected. This type of problem is VERY common when using new sources on new models. Toyota make good on the repairs and all is well.

Uhhh, then why are the new (2007) FJ with rear locker affected?? And i do believe that there are still plenty of disgruntled Taco owners out there...but you probably did not even read the links above, so nevermind.:D

Ahhh, see no evil, hear no evil. BTW, Was there a TSB on the rear axle fix?? Was there a recall?? Are the parts number different??

Hey , very true :D

Like I said before ( 4x )there are 3 sides to every story you read.

Toyota makes great products , some to my liking some not. Just like other mfg's .

I still would not hesitate to buy either a Tacoma or a FJ and go off road and trust it .

EVERY mfg. has problems , some that are wide spread and include the mall hoppers.

These problems could have well be rectified by now.

I also differ on how people use their 4x4's properly can make or break them. There are way to many hacks out there. I'm not denying there have been issues , but every mfg. truck have them to some extent or another.

I am a car / truck nut and can appreciate what brand anyone likes , drives , mods , to their vehicle....ect.

This is my first Toyota I ever had , I love it . I had a problem with the exhaust stink , Toyota took care of it. Thats all I can ask.

Over and out !!! :D

The FJs may have a different issue or they may have gotten some of the bad gears.

Koz

Well, there's more to the story Koz...the problem lies not where the diff was made (as proposed in your TTORA link), but maybe the size of the ring gear. Toyota may have changed something on the latest FJ produced, but who knows at this time.:( Therefore, as late as 2007 (including FJ), there are still issues with the rear diff.

As one member in the link (moderator for FJ Forum) said: "As far as warranty, you would think that it would be a no brainer, but that's not the case. One guy on TTORA, who didn't break it while wheeling had to go all the way to court vs. toyota and eventually won.

Although percentage wise, it isn't really common, I'd still say it is widespread. It has happened on rear ends made in Japan (4Runner + FJ), USA (Taco) and Mexico (Taco)."

Good news is that Toyota does take care of you if you do not have any major lifts on it, nor any major signs of off-roading abuse, and if you're still under warranty.

FYI for you since you're in the market for possibly a Taco or FJ. However, i was posting the info to counter Koz's simplified answer to the "issue". Thus, i quoted his post in my post.
