Tyler James Inc's Ultimate '01 SR5

Got some studying to do.
My rig is an '01 4R, trans and clutch pedal switches from a '99 4R, and the new M/T ECU and Clutch Start Cancel switch is from an '03 Tacoma.

Curious-
I've seen a couple manual swap threads where guys run the clutch pedal switch wiring through the firewall grommet, and down to the auto harness connector. Can anyone explain this nonsense to me? That auto harness connector wiring comes from behind the glove box- why wouldn't you cut into the wiring there? Much cleaner, out of any potential harm's way, and less connections to potentially fail.
Maybe they just don't think about it?

For those who haven't done any wiring/swaps before, it's actually pretty fun(to me). Toyota has awesome EWD too.
Here's an example. Below, I have the starting circuits of a 2003 MT Tacoma(Clutch Start Cancel SW wiring info needed), '99 MT 4R(clutch pedal switch info needed. For this example, only the "clutch start" wiring info), and 2001 4R.

As you can see, the wiring colors varied between 2003 taco and '99 4R. Though they never came in manual, the 2001 colors actually match up with the manual '99 clutch pedal switches. I will need to make the following connections-
Clutch Start SW-
Black goes to the Black in pos 3 of connector II1 behind the 2001 glovebox.
Black/White goes to the Black/White in pos 9 of II1

Clutch Start Cancel SW(pic above)-
Yellow/Green will splice in with my "Black" above.
Green will splice in with my "Black/White" above.
White/Black will go to ground.
Black/Red will need fused +12v from 10a "Gauge"

Cruise Cancel SW @ Pedal(pic above)-
Black/Yellow to Black/Yellow in pos 20 of II4 behind the 2001 glovebox.
White/Red to White/Red in pos 10 of II1 mentioned above.

Now my clutch pedal and CSC SW will start my rig, and the cruise should also function properly. Pretty fun/easy once you get familiar with reading the EWD.

I ran my clutch switch and clutch cancel from the junction behind the glovebox and then under the dash. Pretty easy from there and accessible

Yeah; exactly. I'm not sure why one would do it any other way.
In case anyone questioned my OCD, or my dedication to OEM wiring-

Forever thankful for my wiring from @Chim

All for these-

Gonna make my own little harness from behind the glovebox to the pedal switches and CSC SW. Should be clean. I guess I need to pull more wiring to match the CSC SW wiring too.

Fun, in the I'm going to be really happy when this is over and everything works sort of way. lol

I'll give you a perfect example. So yesterday I mounted and wired up my ARB compressor. It's all color coded. ALL OF IT. I do the engine bay wiring. Then I run the Carling switch wiring. I run all my switches off a blue sea box. The right bank is full so I powered the switch from the bottom slot on the left bank. I get in the truck and turn the key on. Push the switch and..................nothing!

WTF? I go through all the wiring. It's correct. After another try of nothing I get back out of the truck and do it all over again. Then I look closely at the blue sea box. They're fused circuits right? Guess what slot is missing a fuse? Lower left. I put in a 15A fuse and try again.

The compressor starts up and holds pressure. It held it for way longer then ARB's 15 minute guideline. How did I miss such an obvious fix the first time? I'm still trying to figure that one out. lol

Hahaha Well, that's definitely part of the fun [emoji23]
In other news-
Sold the '97 to a buddy in Alaska this evening. He's gonna be flying down to drive it back home in a couple weeks. I've said it a million times already, but I'll definitely miss it.

The way your doing it makes future troubleshooting very easy, like in damn what did I do with the print I drew up for this that was in the glove box 5 yrs ago, lol. OCD (you said it) can be a good thing.

Haha thanks man. I try to keep it as simple and logical as possible.
Um, so, on that note: if you thought I was OCD on the '97 being clean [emoji51] I'm on a whole new level on this thing. It's FILTHY and disgusting inside.

And, just in case you thought your seat belt receptacle had black lettering- it does not.

A wood toothpick works good to clean those buckles.
During your research looking at prints, have you ever run across a board/component level print for Trac/VSC ABS module? I have the FSM prints, just looking to go deeper into the module.

Wow, this build is inspirational. I'm new here but not new to tinkering with cars trucks. I recently picked up a 96 Hilux Surf (military stationed in Japan) and your level of detail and OEM+ concept is exactly what I want to do. Thanks.

Oh, and I'm going to try your method of engine bay cleaning this weekend except with whatever Japanese shine-equivalent I can find at the local auto parts store.

I think I will join your anti-Satoshi club, that makes me member #2.
Haha man, I don't get it. I know grown men on the internet are the most easily offended, so I should tread lightly. That said, this is my thread [emoji12] It just looks like the custom gutter guard grilles high schoolers used to make. I love vintage 'Cruisers, and I love Raptors, but putting emblems from- or resembling- those rigs on a 4Runner just doesn't tickle my fancy. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of work that goes into some of those, and I can appreciate the work!

Awesome! Welcome to the forum am , and thanks for the kind words [emoji41] Post pics of your Surf so we can enjoy it too!
Wow, someone else that cleans like I do lol
My '97 looks about showroom-clean inside, and I wanna go even harder on the '01. It's so nice having everything nice and new feeling [emoji1362]

Man, I hear ya. I wanted the same thing when I was troubleshooting my locker. I'm. It sure where to get something like that. So you have the EWD, yeah?

Yea I have EWD, Board level circuit prints are very hard/impossible to come by, you just never know who may dig as deep as I do, thought I'd ask. Dealer Techs throw module away grab new one, Toyota Techs laughed when I told them what I was looking for.

I like that flag in the window of your 97
Thanks! You- and anyone else, for that matter- can send $10 to [email protected] if you want one. Put the color and your address in the notes! $15 for two, and I'll make one mirrored for the right side- stars always charge forward! I have matte and gloss black, matte and gloss white, and about any other color one could want. PayPal, Venmo, Google Wallet- I'll take it however! [emoji12]

'97 officially sold Wednesday, so I got a bunch of parts ordered. Slowly coming in-

I would probably be bolting the trans up tomorrow, but I really don't want to re-use the old bolts to bolt the flywheel up, Andy Camelback order isn't even shipping out till Monday [emoji30] Oh well. Camelback order should be pretty OEM pernagraphic- if you're into that kinda thing.
Nothing too exciting, I just love new OEM parts. Happened to grab the last hardline support bracket(that bolts to the trans) left in the country. Glad I was able to get one.

Need to pick up a new rad, and I want a short one with no AT cooler provision. Looking at getting the OSC 1986, because [MENTION=144462]Sean K.[/MENTION] recommended it, and its confusing trying to find the correct ND/Koyo short rad with no cooler lines. Open to suggestions.

Answered your PM.....my home email is all messed up currently....so sorry for the delay.

As for the OSC 1986....you'll have to look at Rock Auto under '99 Tacomas....2.7L 4cyl. It's not listed for 4Runner applications.

So far, been running fine in the low 100º+ temps we've been having in AZ so far with the A/C blasting.

I did go to the trouble of cutting and fabbing the old fan shroud back together to ensure I get as much air pulling as possible. Had pics at one point in my build thread, but I've since deleted it all.

If you need them, let me know and I can try and dig them up.
