Unfavorable Tire Installation

Not trying to misinform anyone!!

It would seem logical that with the symptoms described and if they are mucking around in the front end trying to get 285's to fit stock height they might have f'd up something.

My honest opinion though, we're being trolled....again. We both know this is and easy troubleshoot for any dealer tech, even for a bad one. Hence the request for pics :suspicious:

Wasn't talking about you Billy. It was that American Pie guy again stating:
um you went up 2 sizes.... increasing height/width/weight

Check ABS lines
Alignment
Zero Point

And 2013Trail after him taking it for fact that was the norm for going up 2 tire sizes.

As a rule,I don't let the tire guys touch my truck except to put tires on and even then I watch them.lol They are known for more brawn then brains.

Harper, noticed you said not to drive it with this light on, what could/will happen?

You'll have brakes but you won't have any ABS brakes, vsc ,trac or other electronic safety nannies that work in the background and we all have grown accustom to.You'll have to pump the brakes old school if you have to make an emergency stop. Not sure if the assisted braking works or not as I never tried that but I'm guessing not.The Toyota's shut them all down when it senses a problem in anyone of them. I couldn't even lock in the 4x4 when I had a abs wire problem. Nothing worked!

Hi All. Sorry for the late response. I have been away from the computer. I am not sure what you mean by being trolled. I honestly feel like I have been taken advantage of by a tire shop and I am now trying to stand up for myself.

The tires were the first modification. They were put on first since I didn't really like the stock "highway" tires that came on the vehicle. Lift is next. I have ordered an OME kit and am waiting for it to come in. I have a great 4x4 guy that is going to do the install. I just wish he did tires too!

I told them all I wanted was tires no alignment. But apparently they had to do some computer adjustment with the larger tires. I tried to say no but it was too late before the information came to me. The tire shop finally decided they were over their heads and actually said to take it to the dealer. I am starting to worry that they screwed up the computer on the vehicle. I have talked to a couple supervisors at the tire shop (which I am really trying no to bash or name). And when they said they would pay the bill at toyota if there is one or do anything to make me happy.....I really have to think something is wrong. And unforturnately I am over my head with this car because its more then I know how to work on. I may not even be fully understanding what is going on.

The tires I put on it we 285/70/17. Didn't even realize that was two sizes! BFGoodwrench All Terrrain. Here is a link of what they are.....

BFGoodrich*All-Terrain T/A KO

Unfortunately I don't have a way to pull codes or diagnose it. I have attached a photo of the dash light. It's only the traction light. I will work on getting some wheel well shots. I just wasn't able to get a shot when I tried. I will post some soon. Just to add to their trim job........well they didn't do a very good job, they still scrape. I don't even have to make a hard turn to have the tires scrape. Although I know that is to be expected until the lift gets installed.

I will see what I can do to figure out how to check some of the suggestions. I do have an other appointment for the dealer to look at it again. It's pretty scarey if the dealer can't even figure out what happened.

Thanks everyone for the advice!!!

Just curious why you did the tires before the lift? Have you considered re-mounting the OEM tires and waiting to upsize after you've installed the lift? You're sort of doing things arse-backward here.

And they shouldn't need to trim anything.....especially if you had waited until after the lift. Just a simple "Harper7 fender liner mod" and alignment will do the job. I can't believe a tire shop would even be willing to do any trimming to make a tire fit, let alone screw with the computer.....sounds like a lot of liability for them to take on. What kind of shop is this???

Probably because I don't need different wheels with the lift kit I ordered. The stock wheels would work just fine. I talked to the manufacture about the lift and the tires I was going to get and they said it was all compatible. I ordered the lift and tires on the same day. Tires came in first.

As for what kind of shop......One I will never go back to again! This literally has been a nightmare. I should have ordered my tires through Costco. They would have done nothing more then put them on!!! But live and learn. Hopefully it's resolved soon and I can go out and play!

I know. But if I could talk them into it I wouldn't be in this mess!!!!! Actually if I would have ordered the tires from Tirerack and drove the 300 miles to see my parents I wouldn't have had to deal with this. Dad and I would have put the tires on in the driveway and then I would have researched the warning lights to fix it. But now I am hoping to make the tire shop take care of the issue.

I have attached the drivers side front then driver side rear wheel well trimming done by the shop. Not very happy with this. Also I might point out that they did more trimming to the driver side then the passenger side. The drivers side flexes now and will rub because the wind pushes it into the tire.

I'd be pretty upset right about now if that was my 4runner...I forget if you mentioned this earlier, but did you authorize the trimming work? If not, maybe on top of having the check light fixed by the dealer, have them pay to put in new fender liners and whatever else they hacked up? I feel bad for you just reading this thread, you must be fuming :(

Whoops. Here is the rear drivers side.......

Oh my!They trimmed the rear!!! :crybaby: There's no need to trim the rear at all unless they thought you had rear wheel steering. I'm running 34's and don't come close to rubbing there .Are you sure your only running 33" tires.

The front liner could have just been located forward by relocating the holes in the liner, pushing it forward and reinstalling the screws instead of cutting too. It looks like they cut so much that you'll need new ones or else as you said they are will just blow back into the tire. You really need to read the mods sticky and ask questions before doing any more mods...............http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/87546-will-285s-fit-black-wheel-question.html#post759604

You really should tell us who did this so we can warn everybody else not to go there.
Also ,feel free to pm me or any of the other regulars if you need explanations or help.

Easy, Gary. That's the rear of the drivers front fender well. You can see the body mount there.

Couple of thoughts. The OP should have done more research. Also should have waited o put the lift on. That's what the vendor meant by, "lift and tires will be compatible." If that is what this particular tire shop was told Blythe OP, then they are somewhat in the clear. I personally know better just on experience. At the same time, if you came to my shop and said another professional shop said that a 18x12 wheel would fit in the rear of your 1956 Bel Air, I wouldn't know any better. I probably would have installed it.

The difference is, when I find out that it doesn't fit, I'm not cutting anything without the owners consent. She would have 2 options. Approve the necessary modifications to make this 18x12 fit, AND charge for my services to do so. OR, reinstall the original tire and wheel, AND charge for my services to do that. I would go openly discussing that my shop does not have experience with 1956 Bel Airs. I would trust that you've done your homework prior to the installation.

I also don't know if we're getting the whole story from the OP, yet. She was not in contact with the shop directly. So we have no idea who the shop was speaking to about this installation. For all we know, this person gave them the authorization to do everything she's having trouble with.

No the trimming was on the front wheel wells only. Not the back. I didn't explain this right. I think I am just going to get new liners and then I can fix what's been done. I honestly thought when they said they would trim them that they would only do a minor shave to the plastic.

The only other mod is the lift. And at this point I am about ready to quit. I did my research but I don't feel I got all the info I needed. I also was made to understand that I could do the tires and lift in any order.

I think at this point it's time to just start figuring out how to work on things so I don't have to trust a shop. :crybaby:

Well I left the 4Runner at Toyota for the day. They did another zero point calibration with again no fix for the traction control code that was staying on. So they did a re-initialaization of the computer. That fixed the light and the crawl control codes they were getting after the tire installation. And the best part is the tire shop paid the bill at the dealer!!!

Now she (the truck) is as good as new!!! Time to go find some dirt!

Glad to hear you're 4runner is back to normal!

Out of curiosity, did the dealer tell you what is this illusive computer that they keep "re-initializing"?? The only crawl control DTC I can think of off the top of my head (that can be fixed by just an initialization sequence) is the one I was originally telling you about that causes the solid slip indicator light if you don't finish performing the ZPC properly.

You cant blame the tire shop for trimming the inners, as YOU TOLD THEM TO. You can "shave" one... What did you expect? They are tire changers, not Chip Foose.
Secondly, it's your fault you couldn't wait, and got the tires installed before the lift. You wouldn't have had half the problems if you had a little patience.
As for the traction control... who knows.

Installing 285s on my TE and Limited required me to install a front spacer, pull the front fender wells forward (takes about 5 mintues with a screwdriver) and remove the front mud flaps.

Whether you mess with the caster is up to you and how much higher the lift sits.

285/70R17 BFG TA/KOs fit on both.

Neither needed a recal, but the speedos are reading about 2-3mph low at 75mph.

I don't think they can fit without a spacer.

WOW....really you think I couldn't wait. Sorry to say I was given the advice that it didn't even matter what order i did the the tires and lift.

BTW.............I did research. Unfortunately for me I come from a background that doesn't usually change a stock vehicle.
