Urban assault's '99 4runner build

Toyota 8" 3rd member, 5:29, ARB

I will be getting a new Elocker 3rd from you next month, for the rear. 5:29. I will likely keep my current 4:88 chunk, as a "get it home" spare.

I am copying your coilover towers also, and interested in a few more pics when you get it finished up. Thanks!!!

Nice man, just let me know if you need any quotes or have any questions. I would suggest finding an E-locker core to send in, as you would pay $450 in lieu of your core

dibs on the ARB 488 front diff....

just found out i have two different gear ratios in my rig right now... no wonder i keep having issues with my 4wd and blowing CVs so i may as well regear. ill shot you a pm

That could be an issue hahaha

its a big issue in the snow and ice on the roads.. the whole truck just starts skating... as both the front and the rear will break lose and be sliding, its actually easier to drive around in 2wd, unless im just crawling and need to traction. off road its not really a big deal, as i constantly going up and over objects or lifting a tire ect so the difference is easily absorbed or mitigated, and breaking traction is expected and ok. but on icey streets/highways/freeways, its not good at all. the truck either bucks and rocks around as different tires slips and regain traction after the bind is let go and reapplied, or im just in a constant "controlled" slide.

so yeah i have wanted to regear anyways, and 488 is want i wanted, so i may as well do it now. in april i get my extension bonus so i can do the rear end then. -same 488 and ARB, ill just be going through CVs like they its gas lol

Sitting in the corner, clutching knees to chest, and rocking back and forth, repeating, "what have I done", what have I done…"

Actually, It is essentially done and I love the result. Though, there have been lots of twists and turns with this massive project. Huge props to those among us who have completed this project much faster downpour11, ADH8796, Dous, and others.

I am 3 months in and way behind anticipated schedule. As well as way past-due on updates. Sorry. I typically post up with, 'Look what I did' posts, rather than 'Look what I'm doing'. I spent a lot of time reading, researching, and sourcing before the project, and I didn't want anything to alter the course once the ball was in motion. Everything has taken much longer than expected. First cut was on December 11th. It will be on the trail this weekend for 3 days for the first real shakeout run.

Some Specs:
Rock Assault fabricated housing, 30 spline chromos, 3 Linked with Ballistic Joints, PSC Hydro-assist steering, 14" ORI struts.
There are about 20 more pages of bits that go into the above list, but that is the skeleton.

I know, "just show the pics!". And there are a bunch. I will start the updates and will keep the updates coming over the next few days.

The old IFS put up a fight. 15yrs and 300K miles had seized the LCA bolts. Torched them off after giving up on the systematic disassembly.

Note: The strut towers are partially attached to motor mounts. Careful cutting and some patch welding was necessary to sure it up.

Finally, down to bare frame rails. Coated with paint to avoid surface rust over the holiday break. Ummm, that would be Christmas! Forever ago, I know.

Frame plates burned in:

New front crossmember:

Initial axle mock up:

Feelin' Droopy

Then these nuggets showed up. It took 12 weeks from the date of order. Ridiculous.

Doesn't seem like much, but if you haven't done this before, it is a ridiculous amount of work, not to mention the brainstorming and over-thinking of every step. I will keep the updates coming (lots of pics), including flex shots, and this weekends trail pics.
Thanks for checkin' in and thanks mcaz5 for the prompt.

Nice! Excited to see more. Quit with the teasers! lol That front setup is gonna be rocking! You're going to love it. You do anything to the rear?

I hear ya man. I haven't gotten to go to either of those parks. Actually it's the first I've heard of Adventure. I'll probably go ride around Tray mountain when I go to bell. I've got maybe an hour and a half drive to get there.

I guess y'all are gonna get your chance!

Ha! Thanks! I will get caught up with some pics. Really anxious to get this thing on the trail. Way too long on jackstands. There are still a few details to sort out but I can get to those after this first trip. I want to add a skid to the transmission pan. Looks a little vulnerable under there without the protection of the old IFS bud built skid.
I haven't done anything to the rear yet. But it is on the list. I would like to wheel as is and have some fun for a little while then tackle the rear suspension. And still kicking around different ideas for it.
Thanks again. Your build haunted me the whole time. Everyday, I was saying, "How the hell did Downpour knock this out so quick!"

Do you still have the front diff for sale. If so I would like to take it off your hands
PM sent

I guess y'all are gonna get your chance!
Bell and Tray are a long drive for not much. I hit those trails if I'm up that way, but I would rather drive a bit further for much more. Headed to Golden Mtn Offroad park in TN this weekend.

A few more pics:
The real estate is really tight under a 4runner. The panhard, high steer, and upper link all compete for the same spot. It becomes a virtual birds nest of DOM under the front of your truck.

Mocking up the ORI's with some towers from TMR Customs

Gently "persuaded" my inner fenders with an air hammer to clear the towers, rather than cutting through. Though I may add a spanner bar across the engine bay later.

Burned everything in solid and mocked up diff. Turns out the Arb fitting comes out right under my upper link. 10lbs of $hit in a 5lb sack.

Towers burned in and painted

I thought this was pretty cool. Made the equivalent of a double barreled shot gun across my pan hard bar to run my hydro-assist lines thru. Full retention and protection.

Also added a tab to the battery box in order to mount the PSC reservoir. Had a hard time finding room for that too.

I will add some more pics soon.
Thanks!

Ohhh. Ahh. Exciting!
This is well into my future to do list, but I will be watching with bated breath and living vicariously through your project. Haha.
Looks awesome so far, can't wait to see the finished results!

Wow, I'm glad to see you're finally wrapping everything up. It looks like it's going to be well worth the wait. I can't wait to see some action shots! It's going to be a beast haha

Do the cross bar between the shock towers sooner than later. It won't be a big deal to go test it, but it will need to be done soon. You would be surprised at how much leverage tall shock towers like that put on the frame. I have seen gopro videos of shock towers flexing in about an inch as trucks go over terrain. Of course I am more of a baja guy than a rock guy, so it's a little different. Either way, it's worth doing and doesn't need to be crazy. A single strong tube across the engine bay is all you need, even with some bends around stuff, is still good. Just my 2 cents. Everything looks great by the way!!!

I'm going to cancel my gym membership and just do curls with these:

2" DOM .250 wall.

Power steering cooler, mounted next to my transmission cooler. I hope there is enough air left for the condenser and radiator.

The hydro-assist RAM looked pretty vulnerable out front. This piece of scram 1.75 tubing and some plate made nice skid.

Sprung for powder coating on the housing, links, and transfer case skid. Had it done at Smoking Gun Powder Coating in Atlanta. You pay for powder then you can coat as much stuff as you can fit in their oven. Only a bit more than rattle can but the difference is night and day.

Man that black finish looks great, very professional. PM headed your way. That is one badass front end!!!

Looks sweet! You want to sell that old Bud Built skid plate?

I do want to sell it. I was thinking I would have to sell it locally though. Shipping would probably cost more than the asking price. Front and belly skid combo is BIG & HEAVY!

I can see about getting a quote but imagine the freight would be steep.

Re front diff

I have tried to send you a couple pm's since you sent me the one about the front diff but they do not show that they have sent. Please let me know if you have received them as I would really like to buy the front diff so i can get my runner back together
Thanks
Jesse
