Urban assault's '99 4runner build

F#ckin' gangster.

Very well built my friend. How did you like the PBRs? I still love mine. My only complain is that they don't make a 40 inch.

Thank you!!!
I am lovin' the PBR's. A couple of them took a ton of weight to balance, and I was in too big of a hurry to try and spin the tire and force match them. Nature of the beast. Will dial them in after a few runs.
They don't make a 40?!?! Probably best. I don't need to go any larger. But then again, it's only 1.5" radius difference, and I got the clearance so,... :censored:
Planning to rock these til bald, at the moment.

Thanks!

p.s. **Whoa! those pics are big! Sorry! Stolen from a friend's photobucket.

Nice pics from Choccolocco! I can definitely agree that Boat Ramp is very slick and steep. How'd you like your trip there? I've been once and I was able to see most of the park.

Dude your rig is naaaaaasty!!! I swear everytime I see you and downpour's runners I wanna fire up the torch, hack off every leaf spring bracket an get linked!

Saw this rig in person the other day when I was picking up some very nice coil overs for a great price. First thing my wife said "GOD I hope your not doing that!!" I just laughed and told her that's more money than I have. What I didn't say was that I secretly loved it!! Lol. thanks again Steve. Was able to install the coil overs yesterday and they are freakin awesome.

Where in the hell did you find a set of PBR's?!

I have some info on why no one could get these recently. They were my first choice, but I didn't want to wait around for them to fix the manufacturing issues.

Trying to get caught up on your build, still have a long way to go.

Lets get a Coppinger Cove meet going with @Uga Murph and RedDragonATL and I will talk you through it. Thanks Jason!

Thanks! I like Chocco because its relatively close and painless to get to, though I am kinda burned out on all the loose rock and silt. There are a few trails there I really like (Hells Revenge and Rubicon) and I would just assume run those all day. Yeah, it's a day trip. Not a camper. Windrock is my fav at the moment.

Ha! Thanks!!! There were times, during the build, I considered cutting everything off and going leafs. Real estate is tight for links. I say do it. Each build furthers the concept. I know you'd hit it out of the park.

No! Stop! You're making us look bad!!

Thanks! It was the natural progression of the truck. I don't see it because I bled over every detail. But I see people's reactions when I drive by, and they are like 'holy chit!' That's when I realize it's borderline outta control. But I love it!

See! Case in point! Thanks Joe! Nice meeting you and Glad you got those coilovers. I wish I had started with them, as you are, instead of going thru all the other phases.

My god...that thing is badass.
When I grow up, I want to be just like you.
I love this build! Definitely on another level-
Thank you guys!!!

Well chit! That would be just my luck. There was a wait, but not much. About 4wks. I got them thru Allsouth Motorsports locally http://www.allsouthautosports.com/home.html Good shop. They have a U4 rig at KOH every year. What are the issues? in case they come up. So far so good. I have about 700 miles on them with 3 trail rides. The sidewalls are still pretty stiff, but I'm liking em. I have the radials by the way. Not sure if that makes a difference in availability and/or issues.

That thing is amazing. Pictures are great but we need some video.:hungry:
Thanks! Yeah, I guess I need to step up to the GoPro ranks. It's hard to get pics and vids of your own rig without it.

300,000 Miles!

Ticked over a milestone today. 300,000 miles.

I bought this truck new in '99 and 99.9% of those miles are mine. I can think of a few miles where somebody drove my drunk ass home, or I let someone borrow it. Though, for the most part, I can claim all those miles. I figured it out one time, and I have wheeled/camped in 23 different states.

I've been dosing out the miles here recently in order to roll over 300K on the trail. I barely made it. I had just left the pavement, and about a mile up Tray Mtn when it rolled over. An innocuous pic, but offroad none the less.

This winter I will be doing Timing belt and water pump for the 3rd time, and valve cover gaskets. I would like to get another 100k-200k miles out of the engine, but someday it too, will get swapped.

Thanks!

Nothing exciting, but a few updates.
My Optima Red Top started acting up. Didn't seem to ever fully charge, and would really struggle if the truck sat for a few days, or after several consecutive starts in a short period of time. It was about 8 years old, and I believe it was manufactured after Optima's prime. Nevertheless, served me well.
I've heard good things about the Duralast Platinum, and Sears always has sales and coupons, so that is what I went with.
During disassembly I found a lot of corrosion inside the + terminal clamp. It wasn't visible from the outside. In fact I couldn't even get anything in there to break it loose. I disassembled the clamp and soaked it in baking soda. It looked brand new after that. Reassembled with a bit of dielectric grease. That was likely the problem, but I already had a new battery by this point. Oh well.
Everything always turns into more of a project though. The aftermarket battery box I had was specifically for an Optima battery. The new Duralast did not fit securely in the box. I could've modified it and bent up a new lid etc. But Ballistic makes a box specifically for the Duralast. AND...It has a skull on it!!! That is at least +50hp right there! Couldn't pass it up. Ballistic 34/78 Die Hard/Odyssey DT Battery Box
So, what I thought was going to be a 20 min battery swap turned into a long drawn out project of ordering, waiting, uninstalling, painting, installing, etc, etc.
Here is the result:

I also finally got around to replacing the rear body mounts. The factory body mounts have a lot of movement and allows for a lot of frame vs body twist when all flexed out. I realized this from some bumper contact on the body, and also the temporary dynamat I put over my in-cargo coilover mounts was nearly ripped off during my last offroad trip. Evident there is a lot of movement.
Sonoran Steel makes a bolt in polyurethane replacement. I seemed to remember some mixed reviews of these in the past but I went ahead and gave 'em a shot. These:
Rear 4Runner Polyurethane Body Mounts (Pair) - $75.00 : Sonoran Steel, Sonoran Steel Custom Metal Fabrication L.L.C. Custom Toyota Truck Parts
They look a little taller compared to stock, but I think my 15year old 300k factory spacers were shot.

They are kind of a PITA to get out. Like most things on the truck. If you can see it, you can't reach it, and vise versa.
Here are the new ones installed, along with my 1" body lift:

A quick test drive is tough to tell much difference. Maybe a little firmer feel, but nothing magical. The real test will be this weekend at Gulches Offroad Park in SC where the truck will get plenty of opportunity to flex.

I have another update from a disaster camping trip but this post is getting long so I will pinch it off right here.
Thanks!

Wheeled at Gulches Off Road Park in South Carolina this past weekend (Fri-Sun). It is an annual festival for a local offroad club 'Georgia Trail Riders'. Great group of guys. 99.9% jeeps, RedDragonATL, me, and 1 sick Tacoma.
On this particular trip, I was the only non-jeep out of nearly 50 rigs. Not uncommon around here.
I like wheelin' with this particular club because they are organized, consistent, and responsible wheelers.
Anywhoo, on to some pics:

Once the camping gear comes out, this is about all I wheel with. Huge improvement over previous years. A spare driveshaft and highlift is mounted to the coilover tower spanner bar, just behind the Yeti and action packer.

Since the SAS, and the rear full float/disc brake conversion, both the front and rear axles use mostly the same parts. It really cuts down on spare parts in the kit.

Gulches was a small park for a big group. Hit several of the trails multiple times and missed out on 1 great trail due to a jeep breaking down right in the middle of it.
Great camping next to a small river. We bought some moonshine from some of the locals. And, uh....it gets kinda blurry after that.
Great time. I'll go back.

jason in tn and URBAN ASSAULT, let's get a cove ride together soon.

T4R looks great!! I do agree with you though (your post in the gallery), it does look a bit tall now. Any room to drop it down an inch or two?

Also, what are you airing those tires down to for a good bite? The sidewalls are like iron on PBR's... I know some running the 37's at 5psi just to get them to bulge/grip rocks a bit better. I wheeled with a Zuk one time where the guy just took the valve stems out on a set of 39's.
