*** V6 Head Gasket Action Request ***

2004 SR5, December 2003 birthday, 4x4 cylinder 6, 185000 approx. We were on vacation and the check engine light went on as we entered the lot of our rental condo 1100 + miles from home. There were indications that there was a problem for a couple of months previous, rough idle at startup and flickering warning lights, but I was ignorant of the symptoms of head gasket failure and thought that the truck needed a tuneup or something else minor. It took the mechanic in Florida over a week to figure out the problem, but he only charged me for 1 hour of diagnostics. He said to try Blue Devil sealant, or a $2500 plus head gasket job. The sealant has worked thus far, as the truck just passed 218000 without coolant loss and it runs strong.

I just bought a 2006 SR5 with 172,000km. Turns out #6 blew out at around 155,000. This seems a lot earlier than the rest of yours? Now I'm a little worried, is there anything else I should be looking at now that I have this thing, hope the job was done right. It cost the previous owner 3000 $ Canadian.
The rear main seal was also replaced...hope I didnt buy a lemon.

Been reading around this forum a bit, I'm wanting to get a 05-07 4runner this summer.
Looks like I should go for an 06+? my budget caps me off around a 2007 with under 150k
I would rather not replace a head gasket as soon as I buy it, although it would help me get familiar with the new truck

I noticed that there are very few 2006/2007 on this list, and no 2008/2009s. Has anyone determined if this is something that was definitely fixed in the later models with an updated gasket, or some other modification?

Did Toyota give you any indication that there are new gaskets that fix the problem, or are they installing new gaskets of the same design that failed in the first place?

Yes Toyota did come out with a new HG design that is more effective at preventing this common "wheeping" head gasket that is seen in early model 4th gens. This is 06-09

Thanks! Good to know! I wish there was a way to know exactly which build date of 2006 4Runners had the new gasket. Many 2006s were built in late 2005, presumably with the original faulty gasket.

No exact date released but you may try giving Toyota customer service a call as it has been noted by Toyota corporate that'll be your best bet. and for those of you seeing similar issues I would consider having your dealership check the cylinder with a bore scope seeing the type of leak with this HG. this is commonly a "weeping" head gasket a compression test will show a good seal. once the engine cools, it contracts allowing coolant to slowly seep into the cylinder causing misfire (vibration and rough idle).

Head gasket Failure, misfires on 3 and 4. It would run rough starting cold, but I could always turn it off then back on again and it would run fine so I ran it that way for about a year (stupid). Salvage engine was cheaper route, found Toyota master tech to do the job for $800. 10k on salvage motor so far, runs great.

I spent total of 17 hrs, i didn't send out the head because it checked out good with the straight edge. I also didn't have to drop the oil pan. Part of the 17 hrs I spent running back and forth Toyota to pick up some seals that was missing in my set. Keep in mind that I do this for living so all my knowledge helps a lot.
