V6 owners, how are your water pump holding up?

I has the head gasket problem recently at 170k. I replaced it because it had to come off anyway. It appeared to be beginning to leak a little bit at the weep hole. If you do get the Asin from rockouto, cheapest out there.

I did take a trip out to colorado a few years ago in the grand prix and had the water pump go out in Frisco where we were staying that night. Fortunately it waited until we were out of the mountain back roads and the guy at the hotel knew a cheap and good mechanic since my son didn't have bring tools.

My 04 with 73K miles has leak in the same location. I will have a mechanics to do it, water pump, serpentine belt and tensioner at the same time.

What's a good place to buy the parts?

My water pump started leaking at about 89k, I replaced it with a Gates from rockauto.com and the fluid and nothing else. I wish I would have had the mind set to capture all the old fluid and reuse it because it looked just as good and clean as the new stuff I poured into it out of the jugs from Toyota. That would have saved me some cash.

08 4R. Mechanic noticed water pump was starting to leak at 94k so Toyota replaced it free under extended warranty.

The best way to blow a head gasket on an aluminum block is heat - likely from the water pump going out and leaking coolant into the oil. Make sure to watch your coolant level if you don't do it.

Mine has 113 and no signs of going out, but I'm going to have my brother do the pump (he's doing his at 100k as well) when it cools off some. I'd rather do the preventative maintenance and play it safe.

Water pump won't "leak coolant into the oil".

I'm pretty certain the Aisin pump is oem, but I'm not sure about the others. You can buy the bearing for the tensioner from O'Reilly for 35 bucks if you're interested in that option, see my post here. It's super easy if you know someone with a press or you can do it with a vise or have a shop press it in for you. I used the Stant 48778 thermostat only because it is a brand that I'm familiar with, it was 29.79. I didn't replace the belt because it showed no signs of needing it. You'll either need to catch your coolant or buy some to replace what you lose. I replaced mine since I was doing a head gasket and had to drain almost all of it, tho it looked fine.

If you don't plan on replacing the other pulleys/bearings make sure you spin them and make sure they don't bind or anything.

A water pump is a water pump and how they are driven will have little to do with how long they last. The difference is how they are driven. Engines that use a timing belt to drive the cams usually drive the water pump via the timing belt (the V8 in this instance) while engines that use a timing chain to drive the cams (V6 here) will drive the water pump via the serpentine belt.

Not all waterpumps are equal. Cheaper cams and bearings.

Stick with Toyota oem. An additional 30 bucks is not worth the headache of doing it again.

Got under the truck today and took some photos. The water pump leak doesn't look too bad, coolant level drop a bit in the reservoir very few months. Bought the ASIN pump, probably do it after Christmas

bought my 2007 sport v6 beginning of the year at 81k. and the service record showed its been changed at 60k. i guess it busted early, but glad that was changed before i bought the car.

Just replaced mine on my 08 last weekend at just shy of 89,000 miles. The water pump was weeping slightly, and the radiator had a real mild leak to it as well. From what I read, it's not all that common -- but also not uncommon either at ~89k...

Toyota quoted me $1900 for the serpentine belt, rebuilding the CV boots, and the water pump. Just the water pump and the serpentine belts were something like $850... Huge rip off. Go independent...you'll pay halfish...

Had to replace my water pump on my certified pre-owned 08 V6 at 60K miles. It was working but leaking. Covered by my CPO warranty so no cost to me, but they billed it as a 400 dollar repair. I'm in Orange County, CA.
Other than the water pump, my 4Runner has been flawless for years...

Twenty miles after I picked up the vehicle, I get the sounds of a water pump failing. Took it back, and sure enough that is their diagnosis. Is this coincidental? Twenty miles after a major service and the water pump goes bad?

Possible. What is the sound of water pump failing? Did you hear that before?

It was a high-pitch bearing type sound, and seemed to be coming from around the water pump or one of the pulleys.
