V6 owners, how are your water pump holding up?

Replaced at 200k miles

I just changed my water pump. There had been a rattle for some time. Looks like something got in between the inverted pulley and the WP housing, because it was beat up inside and I found the pulley to be out-of-round and scored, as well as the snout. Must have locked up and DEFINITELY Smoked the belt. So the WP housing is Al and the Pulley steel, and last night it went together, with new plugs... I'm the 5th owner and they looked original. Ran Smooth and Quiet. Today I hear SCREAMING. Mainly at idle. Always been uncertain about the engine year, and still am, because the frame has Junk Yard 2007 4 Runner writing on it. Still the body parts have the same VIN, I suspect flooding. Massive flood the month b4 in the county it was registered. The code P0420 (Low Efficiency Bank 1) surrounded by new O2 sensors.... parts changers... I suspect the Pulley is grinding to fit the housing. And, I have not been able to find a tensioner Pulley, without the hundred dollar assembly. The WP Pulley was out by about 1/8" at 90 deg.. hard and timely to find, and another hundred. so dead-blow and caliper. I hope that's not the problem. May end up buying both and the water pump again if that's the case. Took it down the highway and it's quiet again, for now. A little unsettling.

Mine went out at 135k. Coincidentally valve cover gaskets were leaking and bank 2 cat failed at same time. All had to be replaced.

Time for a water pump replacement on my 2007 V6 Sport 2WD. Purchased used in May 2017 with 169,000. Noticed the reservoir almost empty last week, refilled and keeps going low slowly no noticeable puddles but can see where drips have been running down and under oil pan. 10 yr old T4R SE, and the Dealer did the gear oil and new battery. Only thing they noted was the Water Pump. Not leaking bad right now, just carry some coolant. this service writer, my wife and I trust basically. No real leaking right now.

Bailed on doing the repair myself and let my Mechanic at Redline Honda do it for $170.00 labor. Only thing that bittered me up was I only bought 1 gallon of the pink antifreeze, he needed more and topped it off and mixed with the Red. Toyota TBS says they are compatible, but still bitter.

Have an '07 and after recently completing a 3,500 mi trip I'm over 100k. Haven't noticed any leakage and the coolant level has held steady. Going to do a full flush and then continue to monitor it. Thinking about proactively changing out my radiator hoses as well.

My local dealer, Stevenson Toyota West, recommended the pump replacement at 95k miles as a preventive maintenance operation. About $900, or so. They said that if the pump leaks, it can do some damage to the engine (V6 '08 T4R).

The service writer couldn't tell me exactly what damage may happen from leaking fluid, so she didn't impress me as a huge technical expert on this matter.

What do you think? Can leaking fluid damage the engine, or is this just service department hype?

On the V6 with a leaking/failing water pump the only major damage I can think of would be overheating the engine if the coolant
level drops too low, other damage can occur such as the serpentine belt wearing out sooner than it should due to the coolant
leaking onto it and degrading it.

Now the V8 is another matter entirely it would have the same issues on overheating and possibly the serpertine belt BUT the
timming belt failing permaturely due to the coolant leak since the water pump is behind the timing belt cover and not on the
outside as the V6 is will in most all cases destory the engine completely.

That all being said a water pump usually starts leaking as a first sign of failing and then afterward the shaft bearing goes,
so as soon as one sees it is leaking even a little bit it should be replaced ASAP, you can usually have a short amount of time
to replace it as long as you make sure you add coolant every day to replace the lost fluid but at this point time is not on
your side so act fast to fix it.

I have 07 sr 5 that just hit 190,000 miles and my original water pump seems to be holding up fine. So knock on wood I hope it holds up for another 100,000 miles haha

2004 v6 4x4. Water pump was leaking out of the weep hole, I could see the red gunk building up from the coolant. I got a mechanic to replace it and the thermostat. I was slowly losing coolant. It was at around 145,000 miles.

Hi All,
Just chiming in here. I've got over 170k on mine, had it since new and I've never changed the water pump. So far, there has been no reason too as far as I know.

I got 140,000 k on my 2005. No fluid loss, no noise. level correct.
Still on original pink coolant that was in the truck when I purchased it new.

Reluctant to change it as it looks like new - and probably better than new "stuff".

When I get home I start looking through all the maintenance records as it has a solid number of. One that seems odd to me though is that at 87k miles the water pump was replaced. Seems odd it was replaced so early? Don't these typically last well past that? Idk, I'm new to 4runners, but just seems odd to me.

I have the V8 so I can't comment on the V6 water pump longevity, on the V8 most will replace their water pump around 90,000 miles even if it looks to be OK because that's when they need to replace the timing belt under normal maintenance and the water pump is buried behind the timing belt and cover and if you didn't replace it and it starts leaking it will damage the new timing belt which can possibly break and ruin the engine....but I would be happy that the V6 has a fairly new water pump so you don't have to think about replacing it anytime soon, my guess is that it was replaced at the dealership and very likely didn't really need replacing but Dealerships make a lot of money talking unknowing owners into replacing some items when they are really aren't at the end of their life but can easily talk the owner into doing so at 87,000 miles IMHO.

Just an FYI the V6 has a timing chain and most last up to 300,000 miles with a very few exceptions.

I needed to change water pumps in previous vehicles when many miles.
Now in my first Toyota. So far so good. Few miles (35k miles).
I don't think is abnormal that a WP needs replacement when close to 100k miles.

V6 215k miles original water pump, no leaks. did replace the radiator at around 150k.

@ 170,000 and all original to my knowledge. I bought my rig at 70K and I did print out the service history at Toyota and no mention of a repair. After seeing this thread, I'll be checking the back of the pump for weeping, maybe putting a new thermostat isn't a bad idea even though I've been told to leave s%%t alone (if it ain't broke, don't fix it).
