I caved, and just bought the pacesetter V8 manifold for both sides. Amazon has these at a sale price of 230$ for one side and 238$ for the other. I even got free shipping.

I am at a point with mine where both manifolds are cracked, and the stock cat back is starting to rust through and rattle. I am looking at a complete exhaust system, and I want to make sure this stuff is quality.
The book says 7.5 hours of labor PER SIDE.
I am not sure about the rest of the country, but in the Chicagoland area labor at an independent shop is about $90/hr. That puts me at $1,350 just for labor.
I would really hate for the parts to be junk and have to do that twice.

7.5 hrs seems high. Some other guys here have said they'd been quoted 2.5 hrs per side from an exhaust shop. Within the same work day my guys who are not a specialized exhaust shop were done both sides. But I had them do some other stuff. I have about 10 hrs of labour for both sides a lower ball joint replaced, rusted transmission piping replaced, and an alignment done in that time.
The pacesetter exhaust manifolds seem to be of good quality. And the flange is a think one piece. My installer said that he was impressed/surprised with the quality, and might be designed better than the Toyota one. The welds are also nice looking. The manifold also lines up perfectly.
The truck is for sure much more quiet. At first start it is still a little loud. I suppose it's not a prius so it will always make noise. But it gets pretty quiet as the truck gets to temp and rpm lowers. After you drive it, you can barely hear it anymore. My muffler does have rock rash from offroading so maybe it may cause some of the extra noise.
Now I have a Check Engine P0136 I think it is. O2 circuit failure. I will need to check the connections, and or replace the sensor. We reused all the original ones.
In addition to this, you need the manifold gaskets, heat shields, exhaust pipe doughnut gaskets, and manifold studs. It will make the work quicker and easier to use new hardware.
Interesting comment from my mechanic. A couple of the studs, didn't look like they were inserted correctly. Seemed like a manufacturing defect, or the threads didn't match the the stud threads in a few locations. If this is the case, and this suppossed bad process is repeated over and over again, could be why this is reported over and over again. Which ever robbot, machine, tool, is being used keeps making the same slightly off calibration error over and over again.
I still haven't done the rotten egg smell test. :lmao:

Alright CAN, I like what I read.
Just ordered the Pacesetters from Amazon. Same price as you got, and 6 month 0% financing.
I am also considering the Magnaflow cat back system to replace the rest.
This afternoon I will start shopping out the install and see what I can find.
P.S. I also have 2 baby seats..........

Ah the baby seat mod. That should have been my first MOD. Best MOD ever.

While shopping for aftermarket catalytic converters I found out that Magnaflow makes manifolds (with the cat converter like OEM) for the VVTi engine.

Anyone know if they're stronger than stock? My passenger (i think) manifold is leaking and wondering if I should try these or just try to weld/fix the stock one.

The Toyota version is made up of 4 pipes per side. The pipes are connected to a flange that groups them in groups of two.
The pacesetter is one thicker flange that spans the whole connection and connects all 4 pipes instead. This is the stronger way to do it. It might have even made it even tighter to squeeze in. I would say that if the magnaflow is made like that, then probably yes it is stronger than the Toyota version. When I saw their option it was between 400-600$. 230$ for the pacesetter was a no brainer for me.
The other area where the Magnaflow might be better than Toyota or Pacesetter is the Cats themselves. But I don't know how you would be able to quantify that.
As for the egg smell. Is it these Cats the culprit, or is it the second set of cats. I haven't smelled that smell yet. I floored it a little last night, no smell. But it's cold here, and I think I only recall smelling the egg smell in the warmer months,

How do you like the new sound and performance of the pacesetters? Reason I ask is Im going to replace my stock ones very soon. I had a catalyst code thrown this past week and replaced all four sensors on the manifold/cat. I have since then noticed an air sucking noise at a flange on the pass. side (no biggie) took my runner to a mechanic today and as soon as I said I want to replace my cats (he smiled and laughed) he straight up said he wont do it. Said it took him 10hrs last set he did at $75 an hour. He said its a tight space (which I agree) and if a bolt breaks (no bueno). How long was your install? Thanks ahead of time.

Find a new mechanic. I've never heard of someone turning down work.
I had 3 bolts break and it took 8 hours.
The sound is incredible, but I think it's mostly from the Magnaflow cat back.
The performance is very noticeable. Unfortunately, between the sound and the performance and the heavy foot AND the mud tires AND the roof rack, I've whittled my MPG down to about 12.

Thanks man. I cant believe you are only getting 12 mpg thats crap! I kinda put him on the spot (the mechanic) Im packing to move from Cali to Virginia and I told him I needed it done in a few days. I was gonna pay to have the pacesetters overnighted and he flat out said not gonna be able to have it for you. Im just gonna wait till I get back to Virginia and do it but with the borla cat backs and do a 90degree turndown right off the back of the muffler which I have now and Its a deep throaty sound. Def. sets off car alarms with low rev in parking structures
Im curious as to your poor fuel mileage...I get 13mpg pulling 4000lbs behind my runner.

I noticed a hefty drop when I put the roof rack on. I'd say 2mpg.
I noticed a small drop over a full tank when I put the K&N in.
I noticed another drop when I put the big tires on.
And now it sounds so nice I can't keep my foot out of it.

8 hours for both sides wouldn't be too bad in my opinion. I'm scared to death that mine are going to take forever...lots of rust on my flanges.

Here's a print out of the parts list I was given at my dealership. Prices are before taxes and disregard the -25%. That's for an 03...05 and up would be different
Depending which one is cracked or might be both of them. The manifold is the actual part that cracks so that the part to replace. When you replace the manifold you should replace the gasket to make sure you get a good seal and new hardware never hurts

How does it attach? Is it possible to re-use the existing shield? Is it totally necessary to have the shield in place?

Well I got three quotes today for labor only. One was $350 without looking at the truck, one was $650 with a visual inspection of the job, and the other was $1,300 with a visual inspection.
One place told me that if the studs start breaking it can turn into a serious nightmare in which some of the engine has to come apart and the heads have to be removed to drill them out. Very expensive.
So it sounds like a gamble. :doh:
