V8 Aftermarket Exhaust Manifold

Does your exhaust tick? If you have a tick and not sure where it is coming from you can use a stethoscope. The exhaust tick is predominant on cold starts and will get louder with more engine load. Its also possible for the tick to go away once the engine warms up.

Update: Toyota dealer called. Apparently all my studs were rusted solid and they're going to cut them off. $225 just turned into $450 really fast. This is for the driver side only that I'm doing today.
Yep mine spits and sputters when the engine is cold. It sounds like an old steam locomotive. Sounds terrible. After the manifolds get real hot the cracks close and it's hard to hear it anymore.
Problem is that over time, the heat cycles will make the cracks get worse and worse if left alone.
My 4R is at the dealership right now. I'm praying that they can get the old manifold out without breaking off the studs.

Dealer spent about 3.5 hours on the drivers side. The Pacesetter manifold is much higher quality than OEM. 4R is quiet again at the engine even when cold and I'm happy as can be. I hope the passenger side manifold doesn't crack next. :wacko: But if it does I know what to fix it with. $232 each from amazon.com you can't beat that with a stick.

No such option for 2008 models still right?
I'm going back and forth with Toyota right now about this since I'm getting a slight tick on the drivers side now.

I think I read that a shop somewhere figured out how to make minor mods to these manifolds to make them fit 2005-2009 models.
Dealer told me that if your Runner is inside 80,000 miles it's a free repair under the emissions part of the warranty. Check into that.

My existing O2 sensor fit the Pacesetter manifold like a glove. The lower sensor remains in the factory cross pipe. The upper sensor screwed into the new manifold great. So far I have zero CELs and performance is up slightly as indicated by the MPG display.
The paint is coming off the manifold already. Must not have been high temp paint. It's not a problem to me at all...but if you want you could spray your manifolds with high temp paint before installation.
When I get the cash, I'll order the passenger side manifold from amazon. It's $233 also currently. AWESOME deal.
I looked inside the converter on OEM and Pacesetter and the converter material looks identical.

Ok, so I booked an appointment for the install for next Monday. Again I was quoted $225 for the install.
Anyone looking to do this, here are the part numbers you will need:
PaceSetter Manifold (Passanger): Part number 750050
Manifold Gasket (Beck /Arnley): Part number 037-8003
Denso O2 Sensor: Part number 234-4138
Exhaust gasket: Part number 31332
Dorman Exhaust Manifold Studs (Qty. 8)art Number 03105
does the dorman bolts come in packs of two?
Yes the Dorman comes in a 2-pack, but the description is not right. I believe they are the bolts for the exhaust flange, not the head studs.
I bought the head studs (90126-08037) and the flange nuts (90178-A0062) through Partznet.
I am only at the parts-gathering phase of this project, so far I have bought both manifolds, the heat shields, and the assembly hardware.
BTW, the Pacesetter manifolds come with their own gaskets. I bought the Beck Arnley ones not knowing this, but I may send them back. The do look quite different.

Here's a print out of the parts list I was given at my dealership. Prices are before taxes and disregard the -25%. That's for an 03...05 and up would be different
Depending which one is cracked or might be both of them. The manifold is the actual part that cracks so that the part to replace. When you replace the manifold you should replace the gasket to make sure you get a good seal and new hardware never hurts

Yes sir...if you want OEM they' re about $800 a side from dealers in northern New York, forget which one I called tho. Or get the pacesetters ones off ebay...there really cheap and the initial reviews don't seem too bad.

2003 V8 T4R Limited with a 108K miles. I just got both exhaust manifolds replaced with the Pacesetters. Only passenger side was leaking, but I felt better about changing both out at the same time. What a difference! The engine is so much quieter.
I used a local chain with a great reputation in the Boston area. Lou's Custom Exhaust.
One tidbit: They said the felt gaskets that came with the Pacesetters would not hold up as well as the Beck-Arney's I bought. The latter ones have a beefier metal sandwich design.
It set me back $500 in labor for both sides. All told, I spent around ~$1200 with parts and labor to get these replaced.
I hope they hold up for the next 100K miles!

really, really really wish pacesetter made these for the 05-up V8. The magnaflow's are outrageously expensive.
I am currently speaking with Pacesetter regarding this. There is also an alternative for the 05 & up, running with the 03-04 Pacesetter manifold.

When I follow the link to Magnaflow it only shows me they provide a solution for the V6.
When I follow the threads with "options" for 05+ models, they seem to just be these long tundra-scentric discussions.

For all those with '06 and newer 4runners with the dreaded manifold leak...I found a product that worked...and it was cheap. I bought the part and brought it to my mechanic...all in I paid about $900. I think toyota wanted much more than that for just the part. Ticking noise gone, no emission warnings, and I'm back to loving my 4runner!! Below is my vehicle and the manifold options I found online. I bought the Doorman from partsgeek.com listed first below. I know they have the same part for the V6.

So what's the consensus on the Pacsetter manifolds-junk or gold? The rattling complaints are making me hesitate on pulling the trigger. I need to replace the LH one and can't decide on these, Bosal or Magnaflow. I can afford the more expensive ones but don't want to waste money either.
