Valve Cover Removal (Sludge Check) PICS

i run about 8-10 K miles on my mobile one i would say 3K miles is kinda throwing money away when it comes to that oil. but when you do drain it check and see the color of it. i would assume that it would still be pretty close to its original color at that millage.

I mean to try and clean out some of the stuff from whatever ventilation was clogged on the passenger side with a few frequent changes now that it should be venting good again. The underside of the covers have some varnish and gritty/rusty kind of buildup I think from short trip condensation which I dont want to progress. Then I'll go back to just once a year changes.

and 15K is ridiculous UNLESS you use a "Bypass oil filter" which keeps the oil much cleaner.
You will not get sludge running 100% "REAL" synthetic at the normal 5000-7500 mile interval because a good standard twist on Oil Filter can handle about that much filtration of small particulates.
If you get a good quality bypass filter then you could run the 100% Synthetic to 15K.

So its not really the oil thats the problem if you have seen engines sludge running "100% real synthetic" (of which there are only what about 4-6 oils that are in fact real synthetic?)
It was either running a wannabe synthetic and OR trying to filter 15,000 miles of crap through a 7000 mile filter thus somewhere around 10,000 miles or so that spin on filter was clogged and bypassing dirty oil which is why it would sludge.

Um yea, except when you get sludge like I said servicing a s54 per spec with castrol tws.

I do love forum experts.

and that "per spec" is 15K is it not?
And does a S54 have a Bypass oil filter or during that 15K was the Mahle OX 187 filter changed at least once, or did they even use a OX187 and used a 68 instead? Also if the person owning this s54 actually waited until the "oil change light" comes on at around 15K or so, was that 15K done in under a year or was that oil subjected to 2+ years of short stop and go in cold weather running 10W60?
Is Castrol TWS even a real Group IV or V oil?
I assume if its a version that is made in germany that it probably is.

However aren't BMWs actually "required" to run 100% full synthetic oil, engines "designed" to run 100% fully synthetic oil? and that reason being that 100% fully synthetic oil is far superior oil.
BMW simply made a mistake in allowing even great oil to go too far in what is most likely a hot running engine that puts a severe hurting on an oils TBN.

Oil analysis in most of these S54 engines show that the oil is pretty much spent around 7000 miles, correct?
That means a regular petroleum oil in that engine would probably be spent in about 2000 miles, maybe even less.

Then thank you for "expertly" proving my point,

You can use some sea foam and some 30hd oil to cut the sludge I would do it for about 500 mile then change the oil and filter and run the same combo for 500 more did this on a friend VW and clean it up nice he was a oil changed about every 15k lol... Now he changes his oil more then I do lol....

Just to add my 2 cents to discussion, if you replace your PVC valve, go with a Toyota part. The Auto Zone part I seen was mostly plastic and the Toyota was mostly metal on my 2nd gen and 3rd gen.
