Very important please read: Invisible Mask product damage!

I wanted to share this with everyone and would like this to be pasted all over the web so it does not happen to anyone else. I have a 4Runner and was thinking of doing this one day, but thank goodness I did not!

In the event to protect my wife's '08 Accord EXL with OEM paint in perfect condition I bought the Invisible Mask product. It did not go on as well as planned on the hood and left small bubbles under the film even after 4 weeks of being on, so they sent another hood part to me. While following ALL directions to remove the film it pulled off the clearcoat down to the basecoat. It has a disclaimer that it may do this to non OEM paint, but this was 100% OEM paint. So I did not even use the replacement film they sent and don't plan to because this happened. Now I have to pay to have the hood partially painted and all cleared, unless they agree to pay for it...

See the picture attached and I would NOT recommend using this product.

Pass it around. Have someone pay to do this. So if they damage the paint they pay for it! This is going to cost me about $300-400 to get fixed now and I paid $180 for the product. Geez!

From what it sounds like, you tried to install the Invisible Mask on your wife's car hood. It didn't go on good, so they sent you another Invisible Mask protector for the hood. When you tried to take the first one off (the one that didn't go on good), it pulled the clearcoat off the paint?


Did I get that right? Or did something else happen that I didn't pick up on?

Yes, I'm a perfectionist and did not like the way the first one went on, so I left it on for 4 weeks because they said the small bubbles under the film would go away and they did not. So I emailed/called them several times (very poor response on their part) and finally they sent me a new hood part for free, but while pulling off this happened! I was so mad to say the least. It's not supposed to do this on OEM paint as we have. They have a warning that "If the paint protection film is removed, it is possible that the non OEM painted surface could be damaged in the removal process. The buyer recognizes this risk on non OEM paint and InvisibleMask can not be held accountable." So this tells me that if it's OEM paint they should pay for it to be fixed? We'll see. Their respose is not that good and I want to get the word out there to beware!

wow... 300-400 to fix? at that point I would just pay a couple more hundred and paint the whole car right??

I mean, to fix that little spot? maybe your wife wants a cool new color? perfect time for some brownie points! :bigok:

Yeah, it's too bad it happened. As far as the one question "could I see it peeling the clearcoat when I was removing" Well this stuff is like glue, I mean super glue on the hood. It does not tear and when peeling off you have to use both hands and peel a little at a time. Then you have to get the glue off the hood. I used wax, but some say you can use adhesive remover safe for paint (yeah right, not on my paint after this happened). When you reach and area that it not sticking and you're pulling with such force it's like someone letting go of a rubber band. It snaps back at you and you don't have time to react. That's what happened here. I was pulling slowly with a good grip and then all of a sudden it was like oh SH%^! It was too late. They will have to sand, prime and paint that area, then clear the entire hood. I was hoping they could clear only, but because it's at the base coat and they have to sand around the clear it just better to prime/paint that area the size of a basketball, then clear the full hood. Not too worried about color match, because of where it's at and the color is fairly new. So matching should not be a problem.

Thanks again and pay someone to do this for you if you have it done. Make sure their work covers damage like mine should you need to have it removed one day.

Yeah, I was not sure where to post to get the most exposure. Maybe they can move it? Those that have seen it pass the word along. If the company agrees to pay for the damage or some of it, then great I will remove my complaints and give them one thumb up or maybe one finger depending on their response.

Is this a 3M product bra? Never seen any of their products do anything like this. Unless there was a chip there before you put on the product and it brought up the clear as you yanked it off

I've noticed similar products even on new Mercedes and I just don't get the concept I guess.

To protect the good looking paint with a noticeably cloudier cover of see through plastic-I have yet to see a car where it blended in properly so as not to be so obvious.

This sucks what has happened to your wife's ride. I would be livid-is heat not used to soften it up a bit for removal?

Thanks very much for bringing this to our attention. Kind of reminds me of the damage people would notice once they removed the old car bras... remember those? Another "great" idea gone bad....

I certainly hope this is worked out to your satisfaction. My guess is that if a certified installer had put it on they would have no recourse but to satisfy you in the repair. But like any owner installed product they will find some way to say you did not do it properly. I sure hope that is not what happens to you.

Should of used a heat gun and WD40 to remove that film, how did the manufacturer recommend you remove the film?

Out of curiosity, and I know someone else asked this but I did not see a response, was this a 3M product or some other brand sold by Invisible Mask? Also, what kind of removal instructions did they give you? Did they recommend using a heat gun or any solvent?

I completely feel your pain! I had my OEM bug guard installed by my local toyota dealer, and the brackets dug into the hood, through the paint, primer and into the metal. Hood's goin to the body shop this
month. Wicked sorry about your gal's ride. Hope they pay for it, but be prepared for a NO on that and go to small claims!
