VSC Off, ATRAC On Mod complete!

Like many others, I recently bought a gen4 (2006 V8 Limited) and after a
little driving around in our first snow and almost getting run over trying to pull out into the street
with traffic coming, Google brought me here to this old but very useful thread.
I read the whole thread and noticed this post a couple pages back
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/engin...vsc-off-atrac-mod-complete-9.html#post2268711
but nobody followed up on it here which is odd because people have been
asking for years how to make this mod work with a relay so that it resets to
off automatically when you turn the ignition off.

Pretty sure the $16 TR7 module referenced in that linked discussion from the above post is the easiest way to do it.
Among its *many* features is a momentary input, latched output mode (Feature #3)
which will reset to off when power is removed.
Here's the manual for the module http://assets.sonicelectronix.com/manuals/pac/tr7_manual.pdf

First enable Feature #3 using instructions on page 3 of the manual.
Supply the TR7 module with +12V switched (Red) and Ground (Black).

Using any momentary switch with a light (including stock VSC or TRAC button)
1. connect switch's ground wire to a chassis ground
2. connect switch's momentary pull down output to the TR7's pull down input (Brown).
3. Connect the TR7's +12V output (Blue) to the momentary switch's light circuit
4. Connect the the TR7's White pull down output to the
tap for the Diff lock light on the 4WD module, or in the blue harness , or wherever else that circuit has been found in this thread.

When the ignition is on and TR7 has power and you press the momentary switch once , it should trigger the TR7's
latching circuit which turns on the light in the switch and also triggers the Diff lock light, fooling the 4WD module into
to disabling VSC and TRAC.
Trigger momentary switch again, TR7 will turn off both +12V and pull down outputs.
Remove power from TR7 (when ignition is turned off) and outputs reset to off.
Will report back when I have it wired up.

[edit]Verified. Only took about a minute to program the TR7 to Feature #3, and half
hour or so to wire up the switch (plus a little time to check, double check everything).
Works as described above. One press triggers the TR7 input, which latches +12V
output to turn the switch light on, plus a pull down which triggers the Diff-lock light same
as any other switch would be used in this thread. Another press to turn it off.
Turning ignition off, resets it to off (remains off when re-started, until
button is pressed again).

Thanks to Bulldog, CJ3Flyr, SSt4r, and WOLVERINE for the legwork on this. Finally wired a factory VSC OFF switch this afternoon and all seems well.

However, I'd like to point out that WOLVERINE's Red/ Blue wire is located incorrectly.....

Again, thanks to all the pioneers for identifying and testing this mod. Now, LET IT SNOW!

If I'm wrong this would be the 1st time...ever....the world may be ending.
(Kidding.) It'd be interesting to find out - the wire that I pictured and pointed out does have a purple/violet stripe on it you may not have seen it - it's on the very left, centered on the wire.

I had some time on my hands today, so I thought I'd clear this up. It's easy to get disoriented lying on your back with your head jammed under the dash :)

I just checked again, and there is definitely no blue stripe on your wire. Again, SSt4r's post, sourced from the wiring schematics, locates the red/blue wire at position #3. "I originally used copies of the 2003 wiring diagram. For that year, the red/blue wire at the skid control ECU is listed at position #3 & the red/white wire is at #26.". The plug has three rows, row 1 has nine positions, row 2 ten positions, row 3 nine positions. For the position numbers of the wires to match SSt4r's schematic, the position numbering must be as outlined in the table below. I hope it's clear that the red wire you identified is at position #6.

Note that rows 1 and 3 have only nine positions due to plastic fins used to correctly orient the plug in the socket. I designate these fins with an "F" as they are not counted as wire connections. The blue number designates the red/blue wire and the red number designates the red/white wire.

I included a few pictures which more clearly show the wire positioning.

My final evidence is that, when I spliced these two wires as described in this thread, the mod works correctly.

Can anyone tell me if the factory VSC switch that is being modded from momentary to latching is NO or NC ?

final word on this plug?

Hey guys, so I have a 2006 v6 4x4 SE. I'm looking to do this mod or the fine-grained vsc mod. I'm kinda in the planning stages and trying to get my bearings.

I didnt see the blue plug that I was expecting to see, but I did see this black one...is consensus that this plug is for the 115v inverter feature? I just read that its not compatible with the 08 "skid" button/switch, so does this mean that I am SOL for using one of the nice clean factory switches?

Also anybody find the wiring diagrams for the 06?

TIA!

I did this a couple months ago on my *new to me* '05 V6. I used Kliv's mod (fine grained VSC mod) so his device could do the grounding of the wire and also turn off the lights in the dash as needed. It also turns itself off when you shutdown the vehicle so you don't have to think about it yourself. Nice bonuses vs just grounding the wire with a switch.

I would bet that black connector is for the 115v feature, but that doesn't mean you're out of luck. I bought the fj VSC off switch off ebay and a blue harness from the dealership (part number 90980-10933). When I ordered that blue harness they asked if I wanted the wires already on it or just the blank harness. I didn't know I could get it with wires already installed, and I had already bought the little connectors (from here - link) so I didn't opt for the blue harness with wires, just got the blank one.

Install went smooth, but switching it doesn't work in 2wd mode for my year 4runner. I have to be in 4wd. Seems it works in 2wd for some years and not others. I'm still trying to find a way to make it work, but haven't figured it out yet.

Does anyone know where I could find a wiring diagram (similar to the one that SSTr4 posted on page 4) that includes the 115v plug instead of the trac plug? I'm trying to trace the wires from the 115v plug to determine if any of them could be useful....just cant find any useful diagrams.

I did run across this diagram from JA but this doesnt really seem contain the same info im looking for?

What additional wires are you trying to trace, that's not shown on the diagram that JA posted? The post on page 4 is referencing the skid control ecu, which likely wouldn't show any of the 115V wires if they aren't related to that system/circuit.

Well I was thinking that since the 115v connector already had wires fed through the firewall that they might be useful if I wanted to splice into the red/blue wire in the engine bay. But from the few hours of research I just did...i'm realizing that it would be really pointless/add more steps for me to splice into the red/blue wire in the engine bay. So yeah...im just lost in the weeds over here :noidea:

haha thanks for entertaining me!

Gotcha, yeah I'm not sure *where* the wires go. If you download the wiring diagrams in the stickies it shows a lot of the connectors and their approximate location in the vehicle, but not sure if that'd give you what you need.

Instead of trying to get to the red/blue wire at the skid control ECU, why not tap into it at the 4WD ECU located under the glove box? I have a 2005, that's what I did.

confirmation for 2006 v6

Alright, so I'v been referencing info from this thread and Kliv's fine grained VSC thread, and I'm just hoping to get some confirmation here before I start splicing...

I'm planning to use a factory switch(converted to ON/OFF) and Ill tap the red/blue wire at the 4wd ecu (under glovebox). I'll ground it out to the bolt that is referenced in the first page of this thread (under steering column).

To light the trac switch I'm also planning to splice into two wires feeding the CDL switch (basing this off this diagram from KLIV's install guide).

So in the end I would be splicing:

pin 1 (vsc) to pin 1 (CDL)
pin 2 (vsc) to pin 2 (CDL)
pin 3 (vsc) to red/blue (4wd ecu)
pin 4 (vsc) to ground

Does this all sound reasonable? I appreciate any input!

Hey guys so I have a 2003 4x4 V6 SR5 and I'm looking to disable VSC, but reading through this post I've honestly gotten confused by how many different ideas and solutions people have posted. I would preferably like to have it work in 2wd as well as 4wd because I'm planning on installing a Detroit Trueurac in the rear and I think that it would pair very nicely with ATRAC and no VSC. Could anyone help me out by letting me know what I would need to do given what year and model I have? Thanks!
