Rear Currie AntiRock Sway Bar

*Note: having trouble getting photos up, the site has been screwy for me every since it got hacked last week. I'll try to get back to this after dinner and see if I can straighten it out.

**Fixed. See additional pics in subsequent posts.

I apologize for getting this up so late, I had intended on doing more of a write-up style format but figured I should get the info out there cause a number folks have asked me about it.

I installed an an Antirock sway bar earlier this year due to my ride height and extended down travel. I was going to play around with extended links but didn't want to waste time so went ahead and put one of these in. Extended rear links can have clearance issues with the lower control arms, depending on how long you make them. I had one of these Antirock's on my Jeep and thought it was fantastic as well, so it made sense.

I pieced this kit together. All-Pro makes a "bolt on" kit the requires minimal welding, but at the time it was temporary unavailable, so it wasn't an option.

Key parts are:
50" x 1" Torsion Bar
18" Sway Bar Arms, straight
6.5" Link End Rods

My initial plan was to mount the torsion bar on top of the frame rails, but we ran into clearance issues with the fuel filler line, so ended up mounting the bar in the same position but underneath the frame rails. If I knew this beforehand, I would have ordered Currie's 48" tube, and just welded that directly to the frame.

Since we didn't have a tube, we decided to fab drop brackets to accept the torsion bar and bushings.

You want to use short rod link ends to drop the rod end below the sidewall of the tire, if you use taller rod link ends they will rub under articulation.

The axle tabs were mounted just forward of top dead center. This was done to optimize clearance for both the torsion bar over obstacles, as well as for the bump stop mounts and the track bar mount. The rod ends are really close to the bump stop brackets, but do clear and don't rub. I know there's variances from one truck to another, so you could reposition the bar, set the links at shorter settings, use longer arms, or use custom bump stops if the clearance is a problem.

Note I do not have my rear bump stops in right now, I'm stepping down to 2" extended bumps to try to eliminate some bottoming out issues. rochmpr what rear bumps are you using? I have to check but I think I'm going to have to have my rear shocks modified.

If you're looking at doing this, the above /should/ make sense, but feel free to ask more detailed questions. Here are some photos I snapped, if I missed an area you'd like to see in more detail let me know.

Can't wait to see the photos! Or see it in person! Where in the Bay are you?
I was just talking to a couple other 5th gen guys about adding anti-rock rear bars in after we remove our KDSS.

Thanks for the write-up! This site is so f-ed up right now.

I’m in Saratoga. Have I seen you’re truck at Pruneyard in Campbell? There can’t be many rigs with those fiberglass fenders around.

Probably not mine...haven't been over to Campbell with it. My 4runner stays in north San Jose, but I live up the peninsula during the work week.

There's at least 4 of us with the McQueen's fenders here in the Bay (2 black ones, a white one, and my mag gray).

Were you the one that just got the Dobs C59-749V's coils? or was that rochmpr? I just installed my new rear C4 bumper and my current Dobs are dying under there...The RTT and Trekboxx aren't helping either! :)

Got it, yea I think this one was black.. I want to say it was on Kings though. Either way ya, no that's rochmpr, I'm on the 701V's. They hold the weight up in terms of ride height but I think we both commented that the top end feels soft? Or that was someone else. The site is such a mess It's hard to look back right now.

Either way yea, if anyone wants to check the sway bar out let me know. It took custom fitting so l'm happy to share the knowledge.

Thanks! Definitely will be up for checking it out later. We are going to be working on a couple 5th gens soon that are both going LT...and we need to remove their KDSS completely to make room for shock hoops and reinforcing the frame up front.

Yep, that was me that commented on the soft part being too soft on the Dobs. I'm hoping the 749V's will do the trick...I've been driving around for a year like a stink bug cause i sold my CBI last December. Gave the guy the rest of my cut plastic bumper cover too...so I've been bare back there. I was also much lighter. Now not so much! :(

Nice. I’m curious to see the rear shock hoops, you all fabbing those up or retrofitting something existing? I think Total Chaos makes a hoop kit for Tacoma’s, the rear frame on those is c-channel though, not sure how compatible it’d be. I imagine that would be a pretty straightforward job either way though if you have someone with the right skills.

Haha we are not that talented! But, we have a friend with his own fab shop in Milpitas. MiloGen fab that is going to help with everything. He's got a lot more experience building and fabbing up suspension mounts.

Lets stay in touch though...when we get started maybe you can come by and check it out...and we'll check out your anti-rock bar!

Last few pics of the AntiRock sway bar. rochmpr and 4Running303 heads up.

Oh dang, totally missed this! I wasn’t here though so couldn’t have made it anyways. We have a bar bay grill down here too, that’s the place with the beer towers right?

Haha yeah. UC is actually a bit out of the way for me, but we should meet up sometime. I have my eye on a 4x4 labs rear to replace my CBI, would love to check yours out in person.

Ya me too, I'm in the south bay. We usually go to the Bar Bay on Saratoga ave at 280.

Sounds good, any time. Food and drink is always good so I'm down to try some other places out, just shoot me a text when you're free.

I have been seeing some improvements / changes Luke has mad to the rear bumper and accessories and I almost want a new one. People underestimate the advantage of the reduced overhang. It does make a big difference, I have honestly drug the rear bumper a hand full of times and they were minimal hits, and that was on some really tough trails.

My biggest concern is the weight on the 4x4Labs bumper. Definitely pretty stout, and I like that it gives a little more clearance vs. the other bumpers on the market. It's also a bit pricey for a steel bumper, at $3-3.5K its pretty much the same cost of the Hefty bumper except that one is aluminum.

Not too much of a fan on the de-sta-co latches holding it all together, I've seen some failures on those with CBI's bumper although design might play a big part. Either way if I go 4x4Labs I might try to do a single swing out so at least the swingarm latches back in to the bumper vs. latching into each other. I feel that tying back into the bumper gives it a bit more strength.

How much vibration do you guys get with the spare tire mounted up?

Thanks for the info on the sway bar. I’ve been looking at doing this for awhile, trying to stay away from the all pro kit. I ended up getting a Currie kit off of Summit. Anyway, nice build and thanks again for the inspiration.

Hey Jsparky! Nice meeting you on Sunday! We'll have to hit the trails together sometime!

-Bert

Totally, had a blast meeting everyone. Also let me know if you’re interested in sharing your camp kitchen setup, I can feature your rig and/or favorite camp recipe on my channel.
