Got 99.9mpg in my 4runner...take that you greedy oil companies...



Actually, while on hwy 190 going to Death Valley...coming down off the mountain, there is about 4-6% constant grade. In 4th or 5th gear, you can just coast and keep a speed of 60-70mph. While coasting, I reset the trip computer just to see what I would get...sorry for the blurry image, but was trying to drive and take a picture at same time...

By the way, the 4runner performed flawlessly...I know some complain about the air condition performance, but in Death Valley, the AC in the 4Runner was great.

However, one gremlin did pop its ugly head briefly...after stopping in Trona to fill up, I briefly got a whiff of rotten egg smell...it only lasted about a minute. But after that...nothing...fluke???

Experimenting last week seeing as prices were on the rise, I decided to see just how much I could get. I think my test has a few less variables to consider since I live in S. Florida where its flat, unlike your trial. Resetting the computer while driving, I went for a couple minutes at a somewhat constant speed between 45-50 mph. Doing this I managed 36.3 mpg!! Oh how I wish the traffic lights are always green with no traffic on the road like when I tried that.

Although I must say, im impressed with the 99.9 on the display

I assume that 99.9 mpg was achieved with the A/C on. Imagine what you would get if you did not use the A/C?

I think that 99.9 is the highest number that can be displayed, so it was probably trying to show a number higher than you were seeing.

I really do wish I could blame my foot. I used to have a lead foot --- but that ended when I realized that gas was more expensive per gallon than beer.

I think it is the town I live in. Tallahassee is VERY hilly .... and my drive to work in the morning is a 30mph stop and go all the way. Then I spend a good several minutes idling when I get onto the campus. This is always fun because I can see my MPG dropping my a tenth every few minutes.
