Well I've had my first verified bad experience with toyota

So the service manager met me and was very accommodating. Went ahead and did a full service for me and everything is documented for record. They updated the nav, basically anything I needed except a one-for-one swap on the white TRD Pro in the showroom. Its nice, the lights are accented black like the older 2013 trails.

Anyhow... he chdcked my vin and my vehicle did not come with hood insulation. I guess its vehicle dependent?

I'm honestly not too worried. The inside hood was clean, no oil marks or oil splatter in the engine. Ironically diverscale I keep the rpm pretty low and try to keep the eco light on all the time. I rarely go above 2500 rpm.

The oil was clean when we checked it. They did a full drain and replacement. I'm still awaiting the vehicle no but I've never had a CEL or SES light and never had a code pop. Again my biggest concern would be particulates in the engine. I do have a lifetime powertrain warranty so with this documented and my warranty I'm not stressing too much. Had it been my Mitsubishi lance evolution, I would have had a meltdown.

I'm not gunna lie... some all weather mats or something woulda been a nice gesture, but pipe dreams right?!

Anyone wanna see pics of that white TRD Pro?
Did you not MAKE THEM TAKE AN OIL SAMPLE of the existing oil? You can't visually see what will mess it up man.

Weird. My 2014 SR5p does not have hood insulation.

Wonder if it t's one of those dealer options or something... What is it for anyway? Keeping heat from the paint and premature aging or noise or ???

Maybe between '14 and '15? Mine has it although I had not even opened the hood yet on my 2015 before today. Hood insulation makes it handle much better and got rid of the nose dive too.

I would not worry much at all. I doubt any damage was done. The only thing I would be concerned with is if you were in dusty/dirty conditions offroad. Having the oil cap off is somewhat like running without an air cleaner, since the PCV system will be sucking unfiltered air into the intake. Depends on the PCV setup, but the oil cap should be under a slight vacuum when the motor is running. The fresh air source for the PCV is normally in the intake tube after the air cleaner, when you take off the oil cap (or pull the dipstick) on a running engine you create a new less restricted "fresh air" source that is not filtered.

I'm sure your oil got more contaminated than usual given the time duration it was in there, but I seriously doubt any damage was done.

What wf09 said - I would not be overly worried. Only 4K miles (worst case) and I assume those weren't off road. I also think it's odd there was no oil splashed anywhere.

A few questions:

1. Did you check the oil? What was the level? How did it look?
2. Do you really want to know how long it was off? Take if off and drive for 10 mins. If no visible signs, drive for 30. It could it just won't splash, but I doubt it. Or do this: drive for 10 mins and then look at the bottom of the cap. If it's wet, there would have to be some splash.

Also, how do you get a lifetime drive train warranty? And if you have one, why worry about dirt or moisture in the oil?

You are correct. My previous two did not have and neither did anyone else as evidenced by this thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/89759-hood-insulation-missing-te.html. I just checked and my new SR5 does have insulation. Note to everyone who has a 2010-2013: Go buy a new 4Runner. They have hood insulation.

By reading the linked thread you will see nothing has really changed here in the past three years...
you know i called toyota about the insulation not being on my 2013 SR5 cause my wife's 2011 limited highlander had it and the 4runner didnt. they told me its not needed. what do you think?

The inspection place took the cap off...your oil pressure would be significantly less if it was off. Seriously with the engine at idle take the oil cap off and watch the engine make a different noise and the idle bog. At least that is what happens when I took mine off to check the ring compression on my '91 (checking for blow-by).

Hood insulation is just to keep the hood paint from heat damage (my '91 has a fiberglass or as I like to call it "asbestos hood insulation" to freak out people).

Great that it got sorted out in your benefit though :fishing:

So your oil pump makes no pressure if you take the oil cap off?

WOW!
First time I ever heard of this!

I think you are slightly mistaken sir!

Ok maybe I am more than slightly mistaken...poor choice of words, my bad...but the pressure is significantly less. kind of like a really bad oil leak it could be enough to do some damage

Umm, no.

If I take a powerwasher (a pump basically) turn it on and put it inside a plastic box, it doesn't matter if the box lid is open or closed, the powerwasher is still running with the same pressure. The same goes for your oil pump, it takes oil up the pickup tube and squirts it all over inside the crankcase with oil squirters all run off the crankshaft. It has nothing to do if your crankcase has an air opening or not.

What you are describing is a vacuum leak NOT an oil pressure problem.

Please don't post information like this- someone may actually believe it.

Hood insulation can be there for several reasons. The 4Runner apparently does not need it as the 5th gen did not have it for the first four years and nothing blew up, caught on fire, froze, caused deafness, blindness, illness, the plague, plane crashes or anything else. I honestly can't tell the difference between my new one that has it and the old one that didn't. Maybe a bit quieter? I don't know.

Yes, no oil pressure "problem" related to this.

The idle will change when you pull the cap because of what I described earlier with the PCV sucking from a less restricted fresh air source. The Idle Air Control circuit will eventually learn this condition and the idle will be smooth. The PCV system itself is a metered/valved vacuum leak.

As far as oil splashing out of the fill, it totally depends on the valve cover design. I can see it not splashing any oil if you took it easy.

This is exactly why I believe nothing I read on the internet!
