So I had the pleasure of going to my local DMV to put my old jeep plates on the 4Runner. That was a nice shock to see that a 2015 4Runner costs $642.47 to register in Denver CO. I was thinking it would be closer to $900.
My last new car was my WRX way back in 2003, it was also while living in FL.

It's mandatory to take a jar of vaseline with you when you register a new car here in Colorado. And no, they don't even kiss you first at the DMV.

In Kansas we pay about $600 / year for our 2013 SR5. No emissions test though. It drop a little each year until around 10 years when it gets reasonable!

It's a little over $200 every 2 years here (so a bit over $100/yr). With inspections every 2 years once the vehicle is 3 years old. Inspections cost about $30 and cover all the standard things you'd expect. Good way to keep on top of things if you only go in for service a couple times each year.

Here in NV it was about $550, and it's based on vehicle value. When I registered mine for the first time I showed her the invoice of what I paid and she said, "That seems too high." She then proceeded to look up the msrp of a base SR5 on Toyota's website and based the fees on that. It saved me probably $60. That was the first and only time someone at the DMV went out of their way to do me a favor.

I paid $770 for mine in Jefferson County. I was prepared for more, just in case. It will drop fairly quickly as the vehicle ages though. At least with the new car I don't have to do emissions testing in person anymore. That is always a pita.

Many, many years ago it was value based. I remember paying $427 for a $12,800 '89 Toyota pickup the second year I owned it...25 years ago, which would be $795.12 adjusted for inflation, glad they made the switch.
