What color combo did I buy? and Intro

Hey everyone. First, this is my 1st thread so I figured that I would give a little intro. Secondly, I'm a little confused about something so I thought I would ask the gurus.


I've been a Jeep guy for the last 12 years or so, but got sick of my Jeep Commander breaking all the time so I moved to the T4R as my daily!





I bought a rusted out 94 2nd gen and couldn't get enough of it so then I got into a '00 3rd gen in the Stellar Blue color.





Bad luck struck quick though with a nasty case of the pink milkshake:



The radiator was on my list of routine maintenance to do about a month from now, so that was a bit of a whammy. Thankfully, the transmission came through unharmed. The engine, however, has developed a tapping. It's not that bad, so i'll just run it until it dies.



So now my first question on this forum:

Clearly, the main color is Stellar Blue, and my door tag reflects that with the 8L7 code:



But the fender and trim (and pinstriping) appear to be Topaz Metallic:



Interestingly enough though, both my bumpers are chrome and not the color matching. Topaz metallic wasn't an option with the Stellar Blue:




So what in tarnation is going on!?! Did someone just add the fenders and running boards in the past? Or could it have come this way from the factory? I'm not a huge fan of the color combo right now, and i'm tossing up getting the fenders and running board trim painted Stellar Blue to match anyway.

Pretty sure that's "Thundercloud" despite what the chart lists as available for 00, your'es may have been a near-year that bled over into the 01s. Or maybe it is Topaz yet that appears to be a 'lighter' shade than thundercloud.

To me both are nice and I like the color combos.

It is normal for 00s to have chrome bumpers and not matching vehicle color as 01-02s do. I think it came as is from the factory.

thanks for the reply and the great info!

I can't quite tell if that is the thundercloud or topaz. I think thundercloud is more "grey". Any other opinions?
 
X2 on the thundercloud. It’s an elusive color because it looks different in every photo.

Be sure you keep an eye on your tranny fluid. I'm assuming you had it flushed but the coolant in your tranny is very hard to get out. Mine was flushed with gallons upon gallons of ATF and weeks/months later, it still showed signs it was in there.

If you have any doubt there may be coolant in the fluid still, keep flushing.

Did the truck overheat bad? That could explain the tapping noise. Hopefully it didn't, these engines don't fare well to being overheated, even slightly.

thanks for all the responses, I guess Thundercloud it is!

But shouldn't the door jamb sticker reflect that, instead of just the code for Stellar Blue?

I ended up putting about 30 quarts through the tranny before it came out perfect. I drove about 2k miles, then drained the pan and it looked perfect still. So i'm hoping it's okay.

Yea, it overheated pretty bad. I didn't know it either because there wasn't enough coolant in it (being sucked into the tranny and all) to pass over the temp sensor, so I unfortunately drove it for about 10min overheating. I saw on another thread the guy broke down the engine after it happened and found a scorched piston ring. At this point, there's really nothing I can do other than drive it till the engine dies. It sucks that it only has 135k miles on it.

Despite what has been said here, I don't think that your flares are Thunder cloud.

This 4Runner in Imperial Jade Mica has the Thundercloud flares. Its flares in comparison to yours is more grey.

I say if uncertain buy a touch up of each color and see which matches - that'll end the guessing! :cowboy:
 
Page 15 of the 2000 brochure has your truck in it, so it is factory. Toyota doesn't just spray a color like Thundercloud a model year early because they got some cans of it a little early. If they did, then these things would be build like a 70s GM vehicle. This is more than likely Topaz Metallic. Very uncommon.
