p0171 Repairs

I've had a P0171 for awhile, finally got around to checking it out. Installed a new PCV, and cleaned the MAF while I had the hood open.

Made a homemade smoker for trying to find vacuum leaks. Used old socks, baby oil, hose and fittings I had, along with a dollar store soldering iron and ole mason jar.

Worked well enough to find this...vacuumleak.mp4 - Google Drive

So I ordered Amazon.com: MOSTPLUS 1788262010 Air Intake Tube Cleaner Hose Replaces Compatible with 1996-2000 Toyota 4Runner 3.4L : Automotive

Was too excited to see if that was the cause for the code, so until the part arrives Thursday, I filled the crack with RTV and let it see until drive it to work tomorrow.

Hopefully that will be the fix, but do intend to do valve cover gaskets and intake soon, so if its not I'll check the other vacuum lines with more detail.

yes i have q bug deflector...what is the taco snubber?

Well there you go, that's why it's fluttering. Late 1st Gen Tacos had a small snubber under the hood at the center of the cowl. I grabbed one at the junkyard and adapted it to my cowl, though you can probably come up with something home made. It completely eliminated the fluttering at high speed.

No idea unfortunately, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's part of the cowl assembly. I'd look for an '01-04 Taco at the junkyard, or make your own. I think someone here did that, but I'm not sure who, maybe JZiggy?

Nope, I just used one of the taco bumpers that you found for me at the junkyard.

Installed 880s on Tundra 5100s (1st Clip) = ~1" Lift

Ahh..yeah a 14.37" coil on a strut designed for a tundra 14.63/88" coil. Rides nice though. Not sure if the moving the 880s to 2nd clip will destroy the ride quality or if they should even be compressed at all. OR just get some tundra coils and sell the 880s. Paired with 906/60073s in back which i really like..

they are maxed out...to the point if I adjust further up they will fall off. did not know there was a way to adjust latch...tell me/us more

I think those front outer edge adjusters get squashed down after a couple of decades.

And the latch can be scooted around a little with the bolts loose. I'd probably take the grill off, close the hood, and then possibly move it down some.

Hood latch adjustment?

Interesting, I'll try to snag one at a junkyard next time I go.

thanks for that link....the post by Spartacus will help the most...i really did not know that the latch could be moved..it looked pretty solid to me. I also agree with you that if I mess around with it, im gonna have the grill off so I can get to everything esp if I adjust and does not want to open again.

Do you by chance have a bug deflector? Those tend to really send the hood for a nice dance at highway speeds, which can be cured with a cowl snubber, like the Tacos got.

its all because of your hood struts...i am totally kidding....one of my favorite mods to this old rig...like every time i open the hood...i think...great mod...thanks for designing and selling your hood strut kits

You could go with Toikco / LC shocks in the rear... PN 48531-69417
Old post, I know. Thinking about pulling the trigger on these. Called Toyota and it's literally just the shock itself. I'm having a hard time reading the visual diagrams online, but would you happen to have the part numbers for everything else needed for these, like washers, nuts and bushings?

I think this might answer your question: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/2709950-post2.html

My shock actually came with the cushions and I didn't use the centering washer. All the info is in 4WD drive build thread.

I went ahead and purchased the Tocikos. Very excited to refresh the suspension after 103K miles on the current setup!! [emoji1689]

You're welcome bud. I'm curious what you think of them compared to the bilsteins

I'm definitely curious too. Kinda nervous but also excited. Not really sure what to expect to be completely honest. I've only ever had the 5100's and some shocks that came on the truck when I bought it-- I think they were called Gabriel or something cheap. The 5100's have lived a long life. Here's a photo of them currently. Both leaking.

Word of advice, don't even try to unbolt them at the top. Unmount them from the bottom and wring the heck out of them until the shaft snaps. You'll thank me later.

I'm running the Toikco shocks because I've got 4+ inches of lift in the rear, and they are only 3/4" taller than stock shocks when fully compressed, IIRC. There are lots of different shock options for trucks with mild lifts.

By the way, looking at your picture above, what rear sway bar are you running? The end link eye is horizontal compared to stock being vertical...

That will likely be the plan, although I am able to fit my hand in there with a wrench since I've got a 1" body lift. But we'll see how it goes when it's time to swap them out. I saw a picture of the Tocikos side by side with 5100's and the 5100's were like a hair longer. With that said, hopefully I won't run into any down/up travel issues with these new oem shocks.

Rear sway bar is stock, the end links are custom made with a friend. Hit up MattJakobs for the run down on them. They were pretty simple to make and they have energy suspension bushings in them.

I got my truck aligned after tearing apart the suspension for the revalved Dobinsons shocks. Last time, right after I lifted it, the alignment tech just set the numbers to factory spec including a caster angle of 2.4*. The JBA arms made it easy to hit those numbers. This time I asked them to try for 4* of caster and I'm glad that I did. With more caster the truck feels more stable, especially at highway speed, and I feel bumps much less in the steering wheel. The steering input is slightly heavier, but I kind of like it.
