Who has a bore sight? I just found out that my air filter was installed backwards for who knows how long. I need to know how/if the cylinders are scored... if they are its going back to the dealer I can't put up with this.

Yeah... well i checked behind the filter and there was a little dirt, it just sucks to have spent 9 grand and then have the dealer you bought it from do something do stupid to go and spoil the whole deal... Im going to get it looked at and if its all ok I'll enjoy it lol,

What do you mean "who knows how long"? Are you saying you didn't install that filter and havent looked at it since you bought it from the dealer? :bolt:

Pull your MAF sensor and clean it, i guarantee its covered in dirt. You should throw out that K&N anyway and start running OEM paper filters if you care about your motor ingesting sand/dirt/mud. Install and inspect them monthly YOURSELF and you wont have this problem. Good luck with your cylinder walls.

To be fair I'm pretty sure 99% of the people on this forum didn't verify if their airfilter was installed correctly after buying their used truck. I checked a lot of things but that wasn't one of them.

I looked at it before i drove the truck. Not to see if its installed correctly because anyone with opposable thumbs can figure out the obvious direction of the filter but to see if it was filthy and covered in dirt, bugs, debris... if the dealer didn't change a $10 part what makes you think they did all the other "services" before trying to sell it?

I flew Down to Texas to buy the damn thing the last thing on my mind was how the air filter was installed... The "tech" had it marked off as a K&N so he did check it, but didn't replace it for that reason, I'm calling the dealer today.

If I were to guess, someone loved this 4runner but opted for something else (clean brake fluid in the MC is my point of reason), then it was bought by some kid who wanted to be cool, couldn't install his K&N correctly, felt left out of the clique who drive nothing but jacked up 4x4 diesels, so he sold it.

I'd still pull the intake and clean it, just noting what if anything is in there.

It supposedly was a 1 owner car, but I think you might be right. I am not nearly as worried about it now as a I was last night. I have a feeling sleep deprivation had a lot to do with how I reacted to finding that. I'll just clean her out quick, put a gauze filter in, and call it good. I may put the K&N back in, but I am going to clean it first.

don't use the k&n. it gets more flow because it has larger openings so more dirt gets through it. Often over oiled, which can gum up the MAF.
k&n claim 1-4 hp gain. not worth the hassle of cleaning/oiling.
They're a pain in the arse.
Just splurge for OEM.

Although I am fairly happy with my amsoil cone filter that I replaced my k&n fipk filter with. Great flow and good recovery to bad setup

The only way a K&N is going to get oil on your MAF is if the person doing the oiling wrongly puts oil on each side of the filter .

Only put oil on the air side, not the engine side.

I've had a K&N CAI for over 5 years and no issues with MAF.
