What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Wow! I hope the damage isn't too bad. Just today I got my LBJ replaced at the dealership as part of the recall for 01-02 models. Apparently the previous owner had never had it done.

Nice of the dealer to *seemingly* tear your tie rod end boot on removal of the old LBJ and *seemingly* re-use the old bolts on the LBJ.

Have you checked your cvs? I know my cvs are bad and they cause shaking of the steering wheel at the same speeds.

They're CVJ OEM reman's installed 2 years ago, they're OK visually and I don't get any noise from 'em, nor the front end as a whole. Not sure how else to evaluate their condition.

Well this was how it looked before they worked on it...

Prime example of some tech who either doesn't have the right tools for the job or doesn't know how to use them.

With a lift a LBJ replacement should be rather quick and easy.

Finally cut that stupid DRLight wire . They'll be happy at the gate when I go to work Monday. Ordered my new center panel around radio that stereo folks broke tabs on. Expensive fix for them

This is also why I don't let other people touch my truck. Self maintenance is the way to go.

Thanks for watching out! Here are pictures of the passenger side:

That doesn't look right. I'd go back and cause a scene until they do something about it. You can take them off and on with no damage... That's ridiculous.

Thank you! Same reason why I've done plenty of work myself on my other car with the help of my past auto tech teacher. Can't trust anyone.

Pardon my ignorance, but do I just tell them that my tie rod end boot is now torn after the repair? Would my picture that I took the day before show that it was fine before? (I'm guessing the grey metallic stuff is glue and not lube?)

I'd bet it's the grease coming out of the torn boot. I'd take it down there first thing tomorrow morning and show them the damage they caused. It's not unsafe to drive for now, but I wouldn't just leave it either.

The gray metallic stuff is your grease leaking out. Not good.

They should also replace your lbj bolts. They get rounded off easy and some people have had old ones shear off.

Ball joints look good other than old bolts but I don't think dealers ever replace those bolts. When I did mine I want to the dealer to get bolts, they only had one in stock and other dealerships only had one or two in stock also. Could only find 7 in the entire Seattle /Tacoma area.

I don't know what's going on with those tie rod ends though.

I had the pleasure of dealing with this...:(

Yikes! Hopefully the damage isnt too bad... I'm glad that this forum scared me into replacing mine. The original ones had 200,000 km on them and didnt seem worn but I replaced em anyways.

+1 on getting the bolts replaced. With the additional pics I'd guess the tech zipped the castle nut on way too tight initially with an impact, saw he went too far and backed them off hoping for no damage. I did such with an upper ball joint just last year.

Those LBJ bolts are supposed to be replaced with the LBJ....
And the tie rod end castle nut looks way over-torqued causing it to spew grease.

I agree, It looks to me like grease is actually coming out from between the castle nut and where LBJ meets the tie rod. They should not be leaking like that.

Enough of us have commented to make this its own thread...."Stealership botches LBJ replacement"

Was this done at a dealership?

Just cleaned the positive battery terminal so it would start again. Guess it's time for the big 3. It's been towards the bottom of the list but it just got moved to the top in a hurry.
