Since I was running temps of 203 avg and as high as 208.4. I thought I would put in a new Toyota thermostat and cap. I put the new cap on a few days ago and it did not make a difference.

Drained the coolant and I got about 2 gallons out, I was expecting about 1 to 1.5.

When i removed the thermostat housing the thermostat came out with it, and sure enough the jiggle valve (original) was at 12 position.

Everything else looke good so I buttoned up with the jiggle valve at 6 position. Went for a drive and the temps never got above 194.4

What is the jiggle valve?
I had the Toyota dealer replace the cooling system and it's ran slightly hot since then. I've heard this issue before but am in familiar with it

The thermostat has a jiggle valve that needs to be at 6:00 o'clock position per the FSM for the 3.4l 4runner engine. Mine was installed with it at the 12 o'clock position, which for some reason allows the engine to run at higher temps. There are some really smart people on these forums that can probably explain it, but I ain't one of them.

Image 3 shows the valve, the article explains the purpose. I imagine there is a passage in thermostat housing that aligns with the 6:00 position which is why t-stat orientation is important

Nor am I, but I'll contribute to this. Mine always ran hot since I bought it. Changed everything (except rad itself) and nothing helped. This was before I knew about the jiggle valve. Got a tstat with one (non OEM). Put it in and it didn't help. And yes it was in the 6 o'clock pos. Finally I got an OEM and put it in and my temps dropped!!!! In some cases up to 14*. Moral of the story is ONLY USE OEM TSTAT IN THESE 3.4L. I spent hundreds of dollars over the years on this because previous owner (and myself) didn't know better.

Fixed the loose cigarette lighter.

It does not get used except when I test it - daily :D so it bugged me.
Had one from a previous junkyard run.
The new old ghosting is much whiter and brighter than the old one - so much so I pulled it back apart to see if the green ring had come off the bulb - if it even can - nope.

That ring is what allowed the receptacle to come loose.
So, now
I know - 1st world problems.

LOL

Why did you need to send out the climate unit?

Sorry for the delay, school got insanely busy!

From what I understand, the cold solder in the unit goes bad/breaks so it was very inconsistent in use. I would turn the dial to increase temp and it would go down a few degrees or vice versa. Occasionally it would work as it was intended but it was annoying to deal with.

That said, I couldn't be happier now. New LEDs look great and all the button/dials function flawless. Also comes with a warranty so if it happens again in the future, it's covered. Can't beat that!

so this is a stupid question... but can a 1998 2wd r4unner have a rear locker? new one just showed up at a junk yard about an hour from me. this is the only picture of the dash i have.... am i imagining things or is that the elocker switch??

You're imagining things. I believe that's for the security system.

new radiator! i'm not sold on the external tranny cooler, just don't think they perform as well as the stock combo radiator up here in MN. the stock radiator was at 192k and still in good shape so if i can get 192k out of this one i'll be happy.

Today was a day of tidying up things... I gave her a couple of pieces of shiny shiny and finished up my home brew satellite radio install!

The ridiculous antenna is a necessity here. The angle of the satellites is so shallow up north that a tree can block the signal. Total cost, was about $3 because I had to buy some new hardware. Everything else was laying about the house.

I bought the same radiator from Amazon and it arrived similarly, loose in the box; pretty much. Are you going to have yours pressure tested before installing it?

I got mine from the dealer, it was around $165 for an OEM. They were cheaper on amazon but I didn't trust the shipping method. I did an unscientific pressure test on the tranny cooler portion... just used an air gun with a rubber nozzle on it pressed into one fitting and held my thumb over the other, you don't need much air, just a few quick taps on the trigger. held it for a good 30 seconds or so and was still holding pressure, figured that was good enough.

ended up learning a lesson for the skid plate.... do not use an impact to zip the bolts in, i now have a rounded out bolt in one of the deep wells towards the rear. F.

I had the same issue. The dealership I bought from had actually replaced it with the jiggle valve at 12 o'clock. It ran around 205-220 here in S. Florida heat. Now it's since between 192-194

Getting the spare regular rear axle ready for an eLocker!
