What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Light traffic and cruise control! I did notice that 70 mph is the magic number. In my rig above 70 with cruise on I'm averaging ~19 mpg, below 70 I'm averaging ~22. That picture was about 80 miles after stopping for gas the last time.

Ah. That explains it. In my area, it is either drive in city traffic or go on to a toll road with drivers who will run you off the road if you don't go at least 75.

Today was epic. I took the often talked about, seldom run, trail from Big Pine to Coyote Flat. There's a lot of aura surrounding this thing. Buddies have said, "Don't even try" "It's only doable on Rhinos" "It used to connect but not anymore" and my favorite "Just call me when you get stuck"

I started at about 1:00PM on the 15 mile drive to Big Pine. Filled up and got out the High Sierra SUV Trails The East Side by Roger Mitchell. He has some directions to a place he calls Glacier View. It's pretty much the Warren Bench Trail. He stops his journeys at a lookout 10.2 miles in.

That first 10 miles is all low range steep loose and rocky. Class II my ass. When I arrived at his "Glacier View" it was indeed a great view of the Palisades. I could see Sugarloaf not more than 2 miles in the distance. That was where I could pick up Coyote Flat.

Right past his turn around I saw a sign that I have never seen in the Sierra before. It said "Most Difficult. Modified 4x4 and experienced drivers only" Perfect. Past the sign was some serious terrain. Tight turns, very small clearances between obstacles and big, big. rocks. I was solo and did something I never do. I walked the first 200 yards of the trail.

It was bad. Not bad enough to stop me from committing but bad enough that I knew there could be no room for error. Luckily it was downhill and I knew gravity would be an asset here. I spotted my line and committed it to memory. All rocks on the passengers side would be blind so I would use rocks on the drivers side to keep me lined up, hopefully.

I started up the rig and dropped in. It was white knuckle time. Sliders took some hits. Tires tried to grab anything to help me. Blood pressure went up and then it was done. Or so I thought.

After a nice little 300 yards or so of not stressing I see the final obstacle. I know it's the final one because right after it there is a perfectly flat meadow. I stop and walk it. It's not long but man it's gnarly. One minute later my rigs in that meadow. On all 4 tires even.

From there it was 1.6 miles to pick up the Coyote Flat trail and home to Bishop. The loop is 30 miles of dirt from Big Pine to Bishop for those interested in doing it. As usual I forgot to take photo's of all but a few spots. If anyone wants to run this thing let me know. I'd really like some company next time. lol

Very cool! This is an elusive trail to get any info on. Was hoping to run up this trail next weekend...curious if you think a Land Cruiser and/or K5 Blazer would make it over that last stretch where things got rough?? Would these rigs to be too wide to squeeze through? Thank man! Also, do you have a gpx track for this trail?

Got my ScanGauge II in the mail yesterday. Along with the new stereo.....but not sure where to mount the Gauge....
I thought this bugger read Trans temps......boo

This is where my ScanGaugeII found it's home. No messy wires and not in the way of anything.

Look what i found in my 4runner today

I discovered this in my 2002. No obvious cracks or damage to the gasket, but the valve seat for cylinder 4 looks like someone took a stone hammer to it :bash:

and that puddle of coolant in cyl 4 is probably why I was blowing white clouds. hrmm.

Whelp, i found the crack, pretty obvious on the left side. whoops

Sorry man no GPX data. It's pretty straight forward though. Follow the Warren Bench Trail to the end. You'll see the sign and be able to walk the first section.

I'm pretty sure you would be OK with both the Cruiser and K5. That's assuming at least 33" tires. Bigger would be better for this section. With a spotter you'll be fine. I like to think I picked a great line through but in reality I couldn't see much and was committed to just pushing forward.

There's one other spot about 2 miles from the end where there's a largish rock step in really loose sand. You'll want to scope that before committing as well. It's not bad but can easily throw you far enough off camber to cause an oh shit moment.

Once your through to Coyote it's clear sailing. Let me know if you do it and what you thought of it.

I did the rack guides, with the updated version.

I think its helped, but it was bought as a remanufactured rack 4 years ago (when I did the build). alas the non oem inner rods offered less flex and combined with the lift I think tis been under more strain than normal. I fitted OEM inners a bit back and that's is sorted, but noticed some oil residue. Hopefully if it is moving less the seals are ok, the new guide will help, and the entire rack isn't fubar, now I've spent for new inner rods, guide, boots, etc.

I still have clunks, which is frustrating as EVERYTHING is new.. but the recent ones are coming from the recently re added rear ARB, I used front drop links on the back and they seem to knock. Grrrr.

Another RX-7 owner! Good deal!

I used to have two as well. I dunno what my plans are though. I had her on the classifieds for a while but I was able to get the house without having to sell her. I see you have a big heart for rotaries lol

Pillaged the junk yard today. Scored everything I came for down to the factory manual still in the original pouch. Included was the receipts for 1200 bucks in new parts it got about 500 miles and the owner recked it. I made out with new heads, new coils, wires, plugs, vacuum lines, interior parts galore, 4 different types of fasteners for loose panels, and such. Scored the rear wing above rear window, the rear windshield wiper and arm. I also got the impossible to find center console lid in decent condition along with all new cupholders that were also perfect. To top if off the heads we're still present and looked so new I swear the RTV wasn't even dry yet. Went from untouched to headbolts exposed in a little shy of 60 mins. Helps when you know the motor like the top of your d***!✌
Snagged a boat load more of stuff I will post to my build thread. I am so thankful right about now.

Put 63 miles on it today. Pretty close to half city and half highway with the new cheap Scangauge II from Amazon this week. Mounted it on the steering column, wanted to watch my temps after new hoses/flush/thermostat.

180* thermostat and the highest temp I saw today sitting or moving was 181* the rest of the time it was rock steady at 179*. This is with a 3rz manual, lifted, armored, bumpers, ect, 4:30s, 33s. I also played with the MPG estimator on the freeway. Doing 65 for 33 miles I filled up again, gauge was showing 23.5 MPG but it took 1.42 gallons and clicked off. 23.24 mpg hand calculated works just fine for me.

Starting to see the appeal to the 3rz, can't wait to get my turbo build going and put some power to it as well.

Thanks! We'll be heading up the trail on Friday morning out of Baker Creek campground if you've got nothing going on and looking for some shenanigans. Cheers!

I'd be more than happy to put up with random clunking noises if my truck had a V8 too ... :pimp:

Welded on my 4xinnovations rock sliders with some help from some new friends. It was my first time ever welding and by the end I was starting to get the hang of it.
Pretty happy with how the install turned out and very thankful for the assistance.

Managed to squeeze in a 1/2 hour to mount my external trans cooler and fan. I was planning on doing it all today. Then I was surprised by a new addition to the honey-do list. It's almost that time of the month so there was no getting out of it. I've officially renamed my honey-do list to the honey-don't-think-of-working-on-the-rig list. lol

Here's the only shot you guys are getting for now. It's taken after I put the grill back on. I promise when I hook up the fan and trans lines I'll get some better ones for you. The grill snapped back on but it's super tight. I'll probably trim about 1/4" off the back of the grill where the fan touches it.

#1 cylinder injector failed. Bought 6 used OEM injectors that were cleaned and need o-rings and grommets for $60. Luckily you don't have to remove intake manifold to do passenger side injectors so only did the 3 on that side until I need to do them all.

Since I've never cleaned my throttle body I decided to do that at this time. It was pretty dirty. The crappy hot air intake I have don't help much but she sounds nice. Also pulled iac to clean.

I was going to pull pcv valve to test it as I normally do when working near it. It decided to break apart. Was a PITA to get out. Had to screw a screw into the valve to yank it out and luckily I could fish the broken pieces out valve cover without removing it. Even though it could use some new valve cover gaskets. Since I wanted my rig back today I ended up going with the 3rd non OEM parts I've installed. Crappy part store pcv valve and grommets. Will buy OEM and swap it later.

Truck started right up. No more misfire and cel is cleared. But I got the infamous high idle!! I ended up tapping on the iac and she started to idle fine.

Ohh and patched my ac line with some quick steel. Stuff is awesome. Still need to recharge it though.
