What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Just did some maintenance today. ATF drain and fill and coolant. I was planning a coolant flush but found that the PO left water only in the cooling system. It was pretty clean so it saved me a step on the flush but I was glad to get real coolant in there again.

So, obviously I’m in no big hurry. Back in February, Snoop threw a code (https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3224185-post28281.html). The shop that I hoped to do business with long term straight up lied at me about “worn” plugs and offered to replace them for ~$600 beyond their diagnostic fee. This morning I suited up, snapped on my gloves, and replaced spark plugs, coil packs, MAF, PCV valve, and air filter for $282.56. The real value is that shops don’t care about our olde truck in the least bit, but we do. Did the job right, and I know it. And, now I have known working parts for the rolling inventory in case the Snoop stalls out when we’re in the wild.

Pulled the bed out today. Took the opportunity to do a good vacuum underneath it.

While it was out, I went full camper. Our 4runner has never had rear seats. They came out a week after we bought it and the bed went in. After 5 years of use, I took the rear seatbelts and seat latch loops out too. She is officially a 2 person camper.

I took out the brackets for the rear cargo cover and made some blank plates to cover the holes. Don't worry, those #8 woodscrews go into a piece of plastic behind the factory panel, not into it.

Then the bed went back in and a new 2.5lb fire extinguisher got mounted just inside the rear drivers door. Every time I drive by a burn mark on some mountain pass....

While I had the trim panel out to remove the rear seat belts, I spray greased inside the rocker panel again. Every 2 years I try to do this.

Good busy day. Also rebuilt the steering shaft consumable bits but will make a post about this later.

Today I pulled a fuel pump then proceeded to rip all the old nasty carpet out. This beast sat parked for like 2 years while my brothers family used it for a garbage can. Any ideas on things to put in besides carpet

Day 3 of 2... :der:

I pulled the Bilstein 6112's and dropped the clip position by 3 to move from a 2.5" front lift (with 2" rear lift) to a more reasonable 1.75" front lift. Runs flat when loaded down with tools, just a hint of rake (somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2") normal, which is empty.

What a PITA that Bilstein's suggestions are SO far off. I really didn't care to spend another 3 hours redoing work based on that. But it's done, rides nice... I've seen lots of comments about Bilsteins being too stiff/harsh for pavement and absolutely do not find that to be the case.

(yes, I see that it looks like negative rake, it's just the camera angle)

Started on the TRD Tundra strut/coil lift.. Pulled both UBJ, 1 LBJ, & 1 CV before my wife came to get me for lunch (my shop is at my dad's house). Cursed A LOT trying to get LBJ bolts out. I forgot I had an impact. Dummy me. Impact went on & made it a breeze. Oh yeah, broke a metal brake line too, so not my finest hour. On the plus side, my local LKQ had a 3rd gen 4Runner come in & I snagged a lot of miscellaneous interior parts I needed. I didn't get the luggage cover & I regret it (mine broke years ago, but still works great).

Update: Got both CVs out & the other LBJ. The middle bolt/hex head is a complete b*tch to get out. The rest of the diff bolts came out easy, accept for that one. I, for sure, grenaded the front diff as metal chunks came out when we pulled the front diff. Knowing people is good thing as my best friend is a fully certified ASE mechanic with a shop. Dropping front diff tomorrow & will update then.

Installed an X2 Power 24F battery.

T4R has been a little lethargic turning over lately, and this a.m. it almost did not start.

Local B+B had it in stock and installed it in < 20 mins.

Tough to beat $266 OTD AR for a high quality battery with full 5 year replacement warranty.

On the 98 Tetanus 1:
Changed oil, Rotated tires. Replaced both Front Stablizer links. Fluid Film the wheel wheels and skid plates

On 97 5 Speed:

Welded some plates in the back arch with the drill and fill method. New plates are put inside frame with new bottom method (Brillo method..:P ).

after a quick google search and only coming up with aftermarket setups that are mostly cat back, is there any full aftermarket exhaust systems out there that are relatively cheap? that includes a cat?
I keep getting a Cat efficiency fault after a while of driving, some times quicker after a fill up. But I have a snapon scanner through a friend that I just keep clearing the fault and keep driving it. I was looking at some Universal aftermarket bolt on cats, after the exhaust manifolds, and then was thinking of a whole system, doing maybe a smaller muffler/silencer instead of that larger one that is opposite the gas tank. Any links/help would be appreciated, or maybe someone on here sells a whole system?

Edit: I have done o2's about a year ago when I bought it and they are some what on the newer end.

my labor day weekend consisted of just that, a whole lot of labor lol. did every bushing under the vehicle and added 3" toytecs up front and 7 wrap lc coils in the rear, pan hard drop, bump extensions, and a diff drop up front.

if you want to do a full exhaust I would pick up a universal high flow cat and muffler of your choice and then have them both installed by a local shop. I just did this and the cost was not bad. cat was like $100 muffler was like $75 and install was $125. easy peasy and your done.

Started working on the f-150 tank swap. Need to pick up a new fuel pump and level sender and braze the stuff together. And the eimkeith rear bumper showed up today. Yay! Now to install the 1" bl and get cracking!
