Removed the wheel spacers to get more tire clearance from the front pinch welds. (no more rubbing)

The tires are quite close to the spindle gussets now, but so far no rubbing there either.

Finally took the plunge and bought an android head unit! I've been wanting to play with one of these for a couple years now but was always hesitant to pull the trigger, after doing a good bit of research I went with the Atoto a6y2721PRB with no hand gestures. It doesn't physically tilt but I'm not looking much at the stereo anyways and it's got pretty good viewing angles with no paralax that I've experienced.

Engine Compression Check

was finally able to check the cylinder pressures today and i'm not sure how I feel, it could be worse, but still...

1: 180 2: 198
3: 195 4: 195
5: 198 6: 195

Cyl 1 is the problem child, I tested it twice and got the same 180 each time.

What does this mean? :help:

And these are the spark plugs 6->1 from top to bottom. 2,4,6 all have browning around the insulator.

Master Cylinder

Finally got my hands on what seems to be a decent '98 4runner a couple of weeks ago, so I am new to the club. A few days after I got it home, I noticed fluid leaking behind the left front wheel and traced it back to the master cylinder. Got that replaced but I still need to bleed the brakes, which I have never done. It is sitting in my garage and I don't have to drive it, so I see no need to get out in the cold and do it. Anyway, I may be asking lots of questions because even though it is solid, it still has 251k miles on it, and I hope to add 100k more!

Only 100k mile? Short-timer, eh?

There are some "tricks" to bleeding the brakes on these things, like doing it with the engine on, and including a step where you go out and drive on some surface that'll allow you to get the ABS to trigger (it usually holds onto som air) and then bleeding a little more.

Best advice I can offer is to look at the stickies. The 2 that come to mind as the most often used (for me) are the how-to vids by [MENTION=120071]mtbtim[/MENTION] and [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] and the alternate search info (using google directly to search rather than the underwhelming forum search).

I got new tires. Most exciting because it took care of the death wobble that I've had for...years.

That's what I love about this forum. I remember looking at and researching to death what might be causing my wobble at any speed over 50mph. I remember one user saying "most of the time it's the tires". It was.

Got some new kicks. Discount Tire price matching did me right on some Falken AT3’s.

shocks and reman calipers

replaced original shocks
-coil springs are uncompressable, need electric impact wrench.
-used new KYB mounting play, might keep the old plate & boil the rust off.
-plain KYB's are longer than original tokico's
--had to do the bottle jack on uca trick

replaced original brake calipers w/remanufactured Oreilly's, very easy plug and play.
-used vacuum to bleed; still in the dark about this. so i will tube and bottle it later.

The park itself is closed for the winter, so we snow-shoed by the south entrance/visitor center and at the McGowan Cross Country Ski area.

Meant to post a few months ago but....

Revamped the whole stereo ~ $300

Head unit
Door speakers
Mini amp 40w rms x4channels to drive the door speakers (small black box in pic)
8” slim under seat sub

Sub and amp are hidden under driver seat. Threw out the factory amp behind the dash. You could make a trick bracket to put the new amp back there, but there’s a lot of room under the seat.

I didn’t take a finished photo because, as it should be, you can’t see anything except a rather generic looking aftermarket head unit. no touch screen or the like. Made sure the button colors were widely adjustable so I could match the faded green of the dash lights. Can’t stand mismatching colors. Wanted Bluetooth and sound quality for cheap and that’s exactly what I put together.

I was hesitant on the Rockville subwoofer, but it’s been in for a few months and for $90 with wiring kit included I’m more than pleased. Pleased enough that I’m not sure what the $200 brands could improve. The 10” version would also fit (maybe not with the weather tech floor mat) and I’d replace with that if this one ever goes. Not that the 8 isn’t enough, it shakes the rear view mirror, but it’s not ported so anything helps to move air on the lowest frequencies.

Replaced the lift gate supports. 2001 SR5 Build Thread!

These things have been bugging the hell out of me this winter (sagging like 50%). Such an easy swap, why did I wait so long?

I had to remove my whole lift gate to fix it, and found that letting the shocks sit uncompressed for a few days helps a LOT to bring them back to life. I had a sagging lift gate too, and it would just NOT stay up with the window down.

Now not only does it stay all the way up with the window down, it almost jumps open as soon as I pull the latch.

Did nothing but leave them extended in the garage while I fixed the gate.

Also, first time welding ever, with a shitty flux-core welder.
It's ugly as sin, but functional, and good enough to survive winter.

I was hesitant on the Rockville subwoofer

I got their 8" shallow mount sub a few years back to stuff in my cargo hatch area (there's some pics of it in my sig photo link). Box spec'd out to be .32 cubic feet, sealed, and loaded with polyfill . For what it is I couldn't be happier, and that's coming from an old school 90's high school kid who played around with Orions and Godfathers back in the day. But like you were saying, the price difference isn't commensurate with the performance in this case...I believe. I think the Rockville for the price, and being shallow mount, is already pushing those limits. If and when it goes I'll be getting another one if they're still available...
