Starting a stereo swap over from my 1990 T4R to my 1996 Limited

Before tearing out the original T4R 1996 Limited stereo and speakers I wanted to find the wiring diagram for it.
I installed a system on my T4R 1990 4WD that consists of a Sony CD stereo, 4 Kicker speakers and an amp that powers a 12" sub. This replaced the box stock stereo that the 90 T4R came with and was fairly simple for this old man.

The swap should be quite simple as well but I want to also incorporate the Factory tweeters that are installed in the front doors. Any help on this matter would be great, thanks in advance...

The wiring is almost identical to what your 1990 was.

Did an oil change (305k). Noticed my passenger side front diff seal is leaking :whipping2 but I just changed it. It seems like my remanufactured CV axle can move in-out 1/4" on the diff side. Any ideas??

I had a leak issue after replacing my passenger side Toyota CV with a CV axle from Autozone. Figured I busted the seal but when I removed the Autozone Special I noticed it had a groove behind the spline on the diff side shaft. Right where it rides on the seal. I rebuilt my OEM axle (which does not have this extra groove) and put it back in with the original seal and the leak stopped.

thanks for the speedy reply and the link to modified life where I got my last wiring diagram, I'm just wondering which wires run the separate tweeters, I'm sure I'll figure it out once torn apart lol

I finally did the Tundra brake upgrade and boy am I glad I did. I debated between the 199mm and 231mm calipers for a while and decided that since I had just bought new tires for my stock 16" wheels, I would just go with the 199mm and avoid the grinding of the wheel.

Overall this was a very easy mod, I had never performed a brake job myself so if you're someone in that boat, don't be intimidated! If you are used to doing things on your car that require jack stands and hand tools, you'll be fine. Mechanically easy to do, bleeding was new to me but its a common sense process. I just got a bleeder kit with a check valve to make it extra easy ($8). Bleed a little extra if you even think you see small bubbles, its worth the extra brake fluid you'll use to keep the reservoir above MIN (hardly any fluid btw).

This write up from adventuretaco is super helpful also. Parts list, tool list, its just very well done. The only weird thing is the step of bleeding comes after putting the tires back on. Don't do this to yourself, bleed with the wheels/tires off.
Step by Step Tundra Brake Upgrade on a Tacoma (or 4Runner) – ADVENTURE TACO

Performance review - MUCH better than stock 4runner brakes. I've seen a lot of people on the forum debating 199 vs 231 and yeah, if you have 17" wheels, or certain 16" wheels that do have clearance, go for it. If you don't go with the 199mm. It's still a big step up, I have no fade/shimmy issues coming down passes anymore. You'll see the difference in rotor thickness in the images, a lot more material to sink the heat.

I also went ahead and swapped the brakelines to stainless steel. This isn't necessary, but you're there so may as well.

Anyway, hope this helps others thinking about doing this!

Started doing an Led Swap and putting in a new radio then ended up setting up an account here and browsing these forums for hours with my truck all pulled apart in the driveway lol
ended up ordering the wrong bulbs for the swap so I'm gonna have to approach that one again later when the next batch gets here.

Well shucks!!! The side that is leaking is the side with the aftermarket "rebuilt" CV axle. I knew it looked different than my others because the center shaft was not hourglass shaped like my other 3 OEM examples. I guess I will clean and re-grease my spare OEM CV axle and give it a try.
Thanks,

Bikeric - a little movement on the outer part is normal. If the whole thing is moving maybe it isn't seated in the diff correctly?

The driver side CV was more difficult to install while the passenger side CV (leaker) just fell in. It was an aftermarket "rebuild" and the center shaft didn't have the hourglass shape of the OEM. I have a spare OEM used CV that I'll clean and re-grease and swap in. I may as well replace the seal while I'm at it too.

Tried to diagnose why I have the dreaded flashing 4wd lights on the dash 0f my 2001 SR5. Shifted it into AWD no issue, then when I pushed the button again to switch back to RWD they started blinking. I tried rocking it back and forth, driving around, 4HI, 4LO, taking a corner, going down a bumpy road, and every 'easy' trick in the book. No dice.
I then popped off the connecter to the actuator on the transfer case and used my multimeter to see if the actuator was actually getting a signal, which it was! Not sure where to go from here, but electronics are usually more of my thing than mechanics so hopefully I can figure it out soon. I'm looking for a good way to test if the sensors on the xfer case are bad, but so far it seems like the only way is to buy a new one...
I did discover on my commute today that if I go faster than 65 it beeps at me like it is trying to switch into awd, then if I hit the 4wd button twice (from rwd ->awd -> rwd again) the lights turn off! But as soon as I restart the car they blink again.
If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears! I know this is a common issue so I'm reading the other posts about it that I can find while I can't work on it myself.

Finished up my front end today!! Tundra brake mod with the big 13wl and 231mm rotors. Have 17" snowflakes to clear all that no problem. New bilstein 5100 shocks inside OME 2880 coils on the 2nd perch. JBA UCA's to hold it all together. Also did new mounts and urethane bushings in the sway bar as well as extended end links. I love the way it sits.
I redid all the wheel wells to nearly new condition with rust removal and undercoat and paint. Just got the caliper TRD logos in today. Going to put those on tomorrow weather permitting.
Here is a shot of the front and the whole truck. Have a great day all.

I just bought a 1999 Limited with 130k miles. First project is interior lights which I will start tonight. Probably do the deckplate tomorrow. I have a buddy that has a 50in light bar he'll sell me for cheap, but it seems way too large and I don't have a place to really mount it yet. Also looking at roof racks and a ladder. My biggest issue right now is the hood is in horrible condition (paint).

I have a short commute to work so this will be my project as well as my daily driver. End goal is to use it for camping and off-roading.

This is my first post and my first 4Runner so I am super excited to start learning.

The best rustproofing available.

Sadly, winter started today. First day of road salt. Luckily 4runner is safely away.

So I found a 2000 3rd gen 4 runner v6 4x4 with 171k miles it has a winch roof rack and it's already lifted with tires not sure what size they are but it looks 30s also that free down here in georgia . It also comes with some recent repairs information I will add the pictures of that below. They are asking 12,500 for it is it a good deal ?

Without seeing pics and more information, it is hard to say for sure but it doesn't sound like a bargain. The work noted was completed in 2018 so it is not exactly recent... unsure if the owner has only driven it 800 miles in two years or if I am missing something.

There is a buyers guide on this site, I would begin there and ask pointed questions with photos if you have something you're concerned about. Honestly, the truck is worth whatever its value to you is, that will depend on condition, preferences, intended use, and your personal budget. I personally would not pay $12,000 for a 20 yr old 4runner with average mileage for the year but I live in an area with pervasive rust and low vehicle values. Regional differences and condition make all the difference in 4Runner values so maybe someone from the Southeast will chime in.
